  2. Ray Drummond - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 (Arabesque) with Craig Handy, Stephen Scott, and Billy Hart
  3. Agreed; that's a good one. But I gotta say that I love Maupin's bass clarinet work on BB.
  4. Stephen, Have you taken a look at the New York City Jazz Record? It lists most of the jazz performances happening in the city. You can view the November edition here. Scroll down to page 34 for the 11/03 and 11/04 listings. I did a quick scan. These shows caught my eye . . . FRIDAY - George Coleman at Jazz Standard - Chris Lightcap's SuperBigmouth (with Tony Malaby, Chris Cheek, Craig Taborn) at Roulette SATURDAY - Nicole Mitchell, Taylor Ho Bynum, et al at The Stone - Sheila Jordan & Steve Kuhn at Iridium The amount of amazing music that's happening on any given night in NYC is just sick. I'm going to be there for a long weekend in February. I'm already looking forward to it.

  8. alankin, inspired by your post (and soulpope's many thumbs-ups ), I'm now giving this a listen. Randy Weston is such a fantastic artist. And Vishnu Wood sounds good too!

  11. Coltrane with Red Garland: And the new Tom Harrell:
  12. For sure! I found the complete set at a thrift store recently. (No box or booklet; just the CDs.) It's been great fun digging into it, hearing both the obscurities and the classics. NP: Machito - Kenya: Afro-Cuban Jazz (Roulette) Featured soloists are Cannonball and Joe Newman
  13. Various Artists - Atlantic Rhythm & Blues: 1947 - 1974, Volume 6: 1965 - 1967 Mongo Santamaria - Mongo at Montreux (Atlantic)
  14. Eternal Russia: Works by Mussorgsky, Borodin, Glinka, Rimsky-Kosakov & Liadov Igor Markevitch; Orchestre Lamoureux, Paris / Lorin Maazel; BPO Markevitch conducts most of the performances here, and they're wonderful readings.
  15. Thanks for sharing that memory. There's some wonderful music on that CD. Dolly's voice was something special back then, and it blended so well with Wagoner's. This evening, I'm back to jazz: The Incomparable Mundell Lowe (Dobre, 1978) trio with Bob Magnusson and Nick Ceroli and this again: Enrico Rava & Enrico Pieranunzi - Nausicaa (Egea, 1993)
  16. Picked this up at the local library sale today -- along with the Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton above: Stravinsky: Petrushka; Pulcinella Suite / Bernstein, NYPO (Sony) It's always interesting to hear Lenny's take on things.
  17. Such a good record. I'm listening to another great South African jazz musician: Abdullah Ibrahim / Dollar Brand - The Journey (Chiaroscuro) Dyani is the bassist on this LP.
