  1. Pepper Adams and Frank Foster!!! With those two heavies on board, how can you go wrong?!?!?
  2. Thanks for the heads-up on this, GA. It looks very interesting. I'm adding this CD to my list.
  3. What a striking cover image! I like that very much. How's the music, sidewinder??? I've never even heard of Arman Ratip.
  4. Yeah, THAT! The McCoy with the Nat Geo cover is darn good too. ... and the Horace with paired with the Mike & Randy Brecker or vibist David Friedman. ...and the Elvin (like soulpope said). ...Lots of good stuff there.
  5. Richie Beirach - Continuum (Eastwind) solo piano
  6. The Verve/Philips Dizzy Gillespie Small Group Sessions (Mosaic) Disc 5 and Dizzy Gillespie - Odyssey: 1945 - 1952 (Savoy) Disc 3
  7. Kenny Barron + Buster Williams - Two as One (Red, rec. 1986)
  8. Dizzy Gillespie - Bahiana (Pablo, 1975) with Roger Glenn (fl, b fl, vib); Al Gafa (g); Michael Howell (g); Earl May (b); Mickey Roker (d); Paulinho da Costa (perc)
  9. Oh wow. Hadn't heard that mjazzg. I would really appreciate any info, if you're able to dig it up. I'd expect TOP NOTCH quality & sound at that price point. I'll definitely pass if that's not the case.
  10. Yeah. Different time, different vibe. If you dislike the sound of a Fender Rhodes, you should stay away from Don't Look Back. Myself, I LOVE that sound. In fact, I think Don't Look Back is an all-around fan-stinkin'-tastic record. Speaking of... I just discovered that the U.K.-based company Pure Pleasure has just reissued Don't Look Back -- in limited edition vinyl-only format. After some poking around on the web, I found several US retailers that stock it for about $35. I very rarely buy new vinyl -- especially new vinyl at that price point. But I think I'm going to make an exception in this case. This music is SO good that I want to upgrade my blogosphere-sourced download with the "real thing." Oh man. That's so bad that it's good.
  11. Harold Vick - Don't Look Back (Strata East, 1974)
  12. More Carmen: Carmen McRae - The Great American Songbook (Atlantic)
  13. Carmen McRae - At the Great American Music Hall (Blue Note)
  14. Count Basie - Basie Jam at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1975 (Pablo) Interesting to hear Johnny Griffin, who plays like his normal bad-ass self, in this context -- since he wasn't a Granz jam session regular. and Art Tatum - Masterpieces (MCA, 2-LPs) Everything here sounds great -- but today I'm really enjoying the bluesy band tracks with Joe Turner's vocals.
  15. More Fatha: Earl Hines - One for My Baby: The Music of Harold Arlen (Black Lion)
  16. Earl Hines - Plays Duke Ellington (New World) Disc 1
  17. Dizzy Gillespie with Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins - Sonny Side Up (Verve)
  18. Continuing my recent Dizzy bender with this one: Dizzy Gillespie & the Mitchell-Ruff Duo (Mainstream/Legacy)
  19. Poncho Sanchez with Tito Puente - Chile Con Soul (Concord Picante)
  20. Cedar Walton - Blues for Myself: Piano Solo (Red) Mike, why did they boo her? I don't recall that on the LP. BTW: I'm another fan of that recording!
