  1. I clicked on the links above, and BOTH the Jazz Standard and Regattabar misspell Marc Copland's name on their webpages. His name is not hard to spell. Come on, people! Show some respect!
  2. Shirley Scott - Oasis (Muse) Primo Al Cohn!
  3. More John Hicks:
  4. The DBQ featuring Paul Desmond - Stardust (Fantasy)
  5. Jordi Sabatés ‎- Solos de piano, Duets amb Santi Arisa (RCA Spain); reissued on Picap
  6. Jeff "Tain" Watts - Citizen Tain (Columbia) Jerome Sabbagh - North (Fresh Sound New Talent)
  7. Dan -- I'm not sure whether these are truly obscure. (Maybe not!) But they don't seem to be talked about much, and they've all given me lots of enjoyment. Richie Beirach - Breathing of Statues (CMP / Magenta) -- One of Beirach's solo masterpieces. Strong classical influence -- e.g., Scriabin, Rachmaninov -- seamlessly blended with jazz. Bob Moses - When Elephants Dream of Music (Gramavision) -- Very persuasive large ensemble writing & performance. Go for the CD because it has three excellent bonus tracks. The titles will you a sense of the tone of the music: "Everybody Knows When You're Up and In," "Embraceable Jew," "Bugs Bunny," and "Ripped van Winkle." Bucky Pizzarelli with Bud Freeman - Buck & Bud (Flying Dutchman) -- Duos that just feel right. Mike Richmond - Dream Waves (Sonet / Inner City) -- This trio was Stan Getz's rhythm section (at that time): Richmond with Andy LaVerne & Billy Hart. Timeless All Stars - Timeless Heart (Timeless) -- with Bobby Hutcherson, Harold Land, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Buster Williams & Billy Higgins. Not at all the by-the-numbers all-star jam session you might expect; instead, there's a kind of effortless, subtle vibe somewhat akin to the MJQ. Strong compositions, vital playing.
  8. This again: Joey Calderazzo - Amanecer (Marsalis Music)
  9. Pat Martino - Mission Accomplished (32 Jazz) Disc 1 - originally released as Interchange
  10. Brahms: Chamber Music / New Budapest Quartet, Piers Lane (Hyperion) Disc 2: - String Quartet in B flat major, Op. 67 - Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34
  11. Mickey Tucker - Triplicity (Xanadu)
  12. I enjoyed it. It was a good show, featuring an excellent band with William Henderson (p), Nat Reeves (b), and Jason Brown (d). Sanders leaned on his band quite a bit -- often walking to the back of the stage to sit while the others soloed. Then again, I guess he's earned that right.
  13. Kenny Kirkland - S/T (Verve, originally GRP) Kirkland's only session as a leader. A pity that he left us so young.
  14. George Coleman - Manhattan Panorama (Evidence) with Harold Mabern, Jamil Nasser and Idris Muhammad
  15. Pharoah Sanders tonight at the Rialto Theater in Atlanta.
  16. Love this CD. It made me a Randy Weston "convert" -- such magnificent playing and compositions! Stumbled across this music around the time it was first released, when I was just beginning to dig into jazz. It's the first music that I ever heard from either Murray or Weston, IIRC.
  17. Steve Turre - Rhythm Within (Antilles, 1995)
  18. Either !
  19. I'd be curious to know the following: "Are there any musicians who you haven't had a chance to perform with that you would like to?"
  20. No one has mentioned Paul Bley because he's no longer living, and being alive is one of the criteria for the thread. Otherwise, then I'm sure there'd be plenty of listings for Bley. That being said, I think you're hanging on to a "right answer" mentality. There are no right or wrong answer here. If YOU like Ran Blake, then list Ran Blake. Hell, if you like Paul Bley, then list Paul Bley. Telling us what you enjoy would contribute more to the conversation than questioning why artists that you think are important aren't appearing in sufficient quantities on the list. If you don't like "list threads," then don't play. From my point of view, lists are just another means of stimulating some (hopefully interesting) discussion, maybe discovering someone new who rings my bell. That's it.
  21. Steve Turre - Sanctified Shells (Antilles, rec. 1992)
  22. Matthew Shipp Quartet - Pastoral Composure (Thirsty Ear, 2000) with Roy Campbell (tr), William Parker (b) and Gerald Cleaver (d)
  23. Earl Hines - One for My Baby (Black Lion) Brilliant '74 solo recital of compositions by Harold Arlen.
  24. I'd love to see a list from you, Chuck.
