  1. Bill Evans - The Tokyo Concert (Fantasy, 1974) with Eddie Gomez and Marty Morrell
  2. I'm not sure what "boiling over" means either -- unless you're talking about a pot on a stovetop! As for "bowling over," see definition 2 below: bowl over v. 1. To knock someone or something down to the ground: The kids ran down the hallway, bowling over everyone in theirway. A strong wind will bowl that billboard over. 2. To make a powerful impression on someone; astound someone: She bowled over everyone at the meeting with her amazing presentation. His new songs bowled me over, so I bought his new CD. You must go hear this poet—you will be bowled over!
  3. The Dave Liebman Group - Turnaround: The Music of Ornette Coleman (Jazzwerkstatt, 2010)
  4. danasgoodstuff, I pretty much agree with your assessment. I've enjoyed The Sermon, and it's interesting to hear the sacred works in a jazz context -- but it's never really bowled me over like some other HH recordings have. IIRC, The Sermon was the last recording Hawes made before he was sent to prison. With a few exceptions, I like the music Hawes made after his incarceration best.
  5. Dave Liebman - Homage to John Coltrane (Owl, 1987) On tracks 1 - 5: Dave Liebman (ss); Jim McNeely (p); Eddie Gomez (b); Adam Nussabaum (d, perc); Caris Visentin (oboe) On tracks 6 - 10: Dave Liebman (ss); Jim Beard (synth); Mark Egan (el b); Bob Moses (d, perc); Caris Visentin (oboe)
  6. Phil Woods' Little Big Band - Evolution (Concord)
  7. Michel Petrucciani - Oracle's Destiny: Big Sur, California (Owl) Solo piano from '82.
  8. Jane Ira Bloom - Meets Jackson Pollack: Chasing Paint (Arabesque) with Fred Hersch, Mark Dresser, and Bobby Previte Great! Al Harewood is on fire.
  9. The Bert van den Brink Trio with Rick Margitza - Conversations (Challenge)
  10. Joanne Brackeen with Eddie Gomez - Prism (Choice) Adam Kolker - Reflections (Sunnyside)
  11. Another excellent JIB LP from the 1980s: Jane Ira Bloom - Slalom (Columbia) with Fred Hersch (p), Kent McLagan (b); and Tom Rainey (d, perc)
  12. Jane Ira Bloom - Modern Drama (Columbia)
  13. Good one! NP: John Coates, Jr. - In the Open Space (Omnisound) LP 1 of 2
  14. The Maritime Jazz Orchestra featuring Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor & Norma Winstone - Now and Now Again (Justin Time) Stefon Harris - Black Action Figure (Blue Note)
  15. Now playing: Up next:
  16. The Teddy Charles Tentet (Atlantic) I haven't listened to this in a long while. Sounds good!
  17. John Hicks - Some Other Time (Theresa LP) with Walter Booker & Idris Muhammad Milt Jackson, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown - Jackson, Johnson, Brown & Company (Pablo) with Tom Ranier (p); John Collins (g); and Roy McCurdy (d)
  18. Mickey Tucker Trio - Sweet Lotus Lips (Denon)with Reggie Workman & Horacee Arnold
  19. Jimi Hendrix - First Rays of the New Rising Sun (Sony) I stayed away from Hendrix's posthumous releases for many years, not wanting to hear any "half-baked" Hendrix. My son, who's a Hendrix fanatic, brought this home a few years ago. When I finally heard it playing in his room one day, I was shocked by how fully realized -- and flat-out GREAT -- it sounds. Billy Cox brings so much to this music, an incredibly funky and soulful vibe. . . . When Hendrix died, I was two years old. If I could travel back in time to hear Hendrix in person, I'd rather hear the band on this record (with Cox & Mitch Mitchell) than even the classic "Jimi Hendrix Experience" with Noel Redding. I'm going to see/hear Pharoah perform next weekend.
  20. More Lieb: Dave Liebman Quintet - If They Only Knew (Timeless) This is Lieb's smoking band with John Scofield and Terumasa Hino, the slapper of over-enthusiastic student drummers. David Liebman Big Band, Directed by Gunnar Mossblad - Beyond the Line (OmniTone)
  21. I've been listening to the Dave Liebman Group:
  22. Marian McPartland - In My Life (Concord) with Gary Mazzaroppi (b) and Glenn Davis (d); Chris Potter (as, ts) also sits in on a few cuts
  23. Andy Emler - Sombritude (Casa Editions, rec. 1998) - Andy Emler, piano - Dave Liebman, saxophone soprano & ténor saxophone, flûte indienne - Stephane Belmondo, trompette & bugle - Linley Marthe, basse électrique - Francis Lassus, batterie
