Count Basie Meets Oscar Peterson - The Timekeepers (Pablo / OJC) Lately, I've really been enjoying the Basie/OP small-group collaborations on Pablo. They made five LPs together. All of them are worth checking out, IMO. Oscar Peterson & Clark Terry (Pablo / OJC) Wonderful duets.

Agreed. They are probably my favorite post-1960s version of the Jazz Messengers -- at least on record. Unfortunately, I never got to see Blakey in person.

Oscar Peterson Trio - 1961 Cologne, Gürzenich Concert Hall (WDR Jazzline) with Ray Brown & Ed Thigpen Good stuff. Thanks to Ken Dryden for hipping me to this.

Herb Hall - Old Tyme Modern (Sackville) More Claude Hopkins on Sackville; this time in a quartet supporting Edmond's brother.

Claude Hopkins - Soliloquy (Sackville) Some lovely, understated stride here. Very evocative.

Just realized that I overlooked this LP on my list above: Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim - Ode to Duke Ellington (issued on Philips Japan, Inner City, and West Wind, rec. 1973) Unlike many tributes, which can be pedestrian and uninspired, Ibrahim's tribute to Ellington is extraordinary, a deeply personal meditation.

More Kirk, but from earlier in his career: You're right. There are so many great RRK records! It's almost impossible to choose one. BTW: I've never heard Brotherman in the Fatherland. I'll have to look into that one -- since you rate it so highly. Thanks.

For sure. If I were forced to pick one favorite RRK disc, it could well be Prepare Thyself. . . I'm still rolling with Rahsaan: IMO, Bright Moments is another HIGH peak in RRK's discography.
