  1. So sad to hear this news. He was a fantastic musician.
  2. At least we have the live recordings on Red Records.
  3. Love that record, that band. Speaking of Buster Williams. . . Buster Williams Quartet - Lost in a Memory (TCB Records, 1999) Excellent.
  4. John Hicks - Hicks Time: Solo Piano (Passin' Thru) Gorgeous.
  5. Larry Coryell - Standing Ovation (Mood Records) Really enjoying this.
  6. Terrific. NP: George Mraz Trio - Plucking and Bowing (Progressive) Does anyone know the story on this recording? It appears to have been recorded in 1978 but not released until 2016. I wonder why. I'm listening via YT, so I don't have access to the liner notes.
  7. Several felicitous pairings this morning: Oscar Peterson Trio & Milt Jackson - Reunion Blues (MPS) Count Basie / Zoot Sims - Basie & Zoot (Pablo / OJC) Basie's minimalism -- "Splank!" -- with Zoot's luscious sound really works well. Cecil Payne & Duke Jordan - Brooklyn Brothers (Muse / Elemental) Good record! I haven't heard it in a long while. Need to pull that one out!
  8. Earlier tonight on the way home from work: Jerry Gonzalez - Ya Yo Me Curé (Sunnyside, originally issued on American Clavé) Includes a brilliant version of Monk's "Evidence." NP: Randy Weston - S/T (PAUSA) Solo recital recorded in Italy in '76. Typically great Weston playing & compositions.
  9. Bud Shank, Bill Mays, Alan Broadbent - Crystal Comment (Concord)
  10. I was very sad to hear the news of his passing. I've always loved his movies -- since I was a kid right up to the present. I recently re-watched The Ladies Man, and it had me laughing out loud. That trippy, surreal dancing scene with Harry James' band. . . Wow. Brilliant.
  11. soulpope mentioned Carter Jefferson earlier today. . . Carter Jefferson - The Rise of Atlantis (Timeless)
  12. Thanks for the info, mike. Bummer that it's not available. NP: A Night with Poncho Sanchez Live: Bailar (Concord Picante)
  13. That's stinkin' fantastic! THANK YOU for sharing!!! So cool to SEE them perform! Has this entire concert ever been released on DVD? Total thumbs up on the idea that we should always be skeptical of the "received wisdom" regarding music -- and art in general! No sense in accepting others' judgments without first giving it an honest, fair shake and then deciding for ourselves whether it's dross, gold, or something in between.
  14. Absolutely. I love the dynamism, the thrust of that record. And thanks for the heads-up about "Saoco." I had no idea.
  15. Bill Barron - Modern Windows Suite (Savoy) Despite the title, this CD does not include all of the music from Modern Windows -- only side A (4 cuts) from the LP. On the other hand, all of the music from The Tenor Stylings of Bill Barron LP is included on the disc. So Modern Windows Suite seems like an unnecessarily confusing choice for this reissue. . . . Oh well. The music is good!
  16. Mongo Santamaría - Mongo at Montreux (Atlantic, 1971)
  17. Mine too. NP: Dannie Richmond Quartet - Ode to Mingus (Soul Note) with Bill Saxton (ts), Danny Mixon (p), Mike Richmond (b) Powerful Mingus tribute.
  18. Cal Tjader - Huracán (LaserLight, originally released on Crystal Clear Recordings) with Clare Fischer, Gary Foster, Poncho Sanchez, a.o. I thought it was Michel Legrand who said that . . . Could easily be mis-remembering!
  19. Great writing, Larry. Makes me want to explore Connor's music more thoroughly. NP:
  20. This again: Ray Mantilla - Mantilla (Inner City)
  21. John Coates, Jr. - Alone and Live at the Deer Head (Omnisound)
  22. The Inimitable Teddy Edwards (Xanadu) Everything comes together perfectly here. A great record.
  23. Doc Cheatham & Sammy Price - Doc & Sammy (Sackville)
