  5. Jaki Byard with Strings! uses similar instrumentation, although it isn't exactly the same: Piano, Organ – Jaki Byard Violin – Ray Nance Cello – Ron Carter Guitar – George Benson Bass – Richard Davis Drums, Vibraphone – Alan Dawson The title is a bit misleading. The strings are the violin, cello, guitar and bass -- not a full string section like most "with strings" records.
  6. Trio East - Best Bets (Origin) Sorta unusual trumpet / bass / drums format. It works beautifully here.
  7. Bill Barron - Variations in Blue (Muse, 1983) Yeah!!!
  8. Arturo O'Farrill & The Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Orchestra - Final Night at Birdland (Zoho)

  13. More Ira Sullivan:
  14. I really like that one. One of Hutch's strongest during his later Blue Note years, imho. ULTRA laid back. So good!!! Now listening to Ira Sullivan's Multimedia again: I think this is a wonderful record. Sullivan's ability to play different instruments really well is astonishing. I wonder if it actually hurt him in terms of notoriety. Here's what I mean: Usually when you're getting to know a musician, you only have to learn one sound. (Occasionally, you'll come across multiple instrumentalists. But typically they have a main axe and supplement it with other instruments.) But Sullivan is a true multi-instrumentalist. And that means that you really need to figure out his "signatures" on several different instruments. As a (non-musician) listener, that makes it a bit tougher to get a toe-hold on what he's all about. All that said, the more I listen, the more I am impressed. It's well worth the effort!
  15. Charles Williams - Trees and Grass and Things (Mainstream, 1971)
  16. Dom Um Romão - S/T (Muse) A particularly strong cover, I think. Photo, typography, color elements all come together well. The music is good too!
  17. Poncho Sanchez - Conga Caliente (Concord Picante) Disc 2 - originally released as La Familia
  18. Eddie Palmieri - Palmas (Nonesuch)
  19. More Clare Fischer: Jazz Song (Revelation)
  20. Clare Fischer in the Reclamation Act of 1972! (Revelation) Solo piano on four of six tracks; trio with Chuck Domanico & Colin Bailey on the other two.
