Let's pick my Album of the Week for May 11-17
connoisseur series500 replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
I voted for Ole because it's the only one I have and can, therefore, comment on. -
Another question about Blue Note Conns
connoisseur series500 replied to sheldonm's topic in Discography
Interesting, though, that BN is remastering and reissuing older Conns. Wonder if any of us who are missing some of the earlier issues should hold out to see if they get remastered and reissued. -
Jury duty sucks ass...
connoisseur series500 replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Is that the right thing to do, Alex? The defendent could very well be guilty in my eyes as a juror, and I would have to vote him as such, but since I am against capital punishment, I would have to recuse myself from the jury. The defendent could be guilty but I'm not sending anyone to a state-sponsored killing. -
Another question about Blue Note Conns
connoisseur series500 replied to sheldonm's topic in Discography
One question on this: Are the Conns from the first series, therefore, generally harder to find than the later series? Shorter's "All Seeing Eye" seems to be all over the place. At least in my area, or was that reissued as an RVG? It also appears as if BN is remastering and reissuing some of the Conns as RVGs like "Blowing In From Chicago." Was Grant Green, "Green Street" originally a Conn? It was recently reissued. -
Jury duty sucks ass...

I am actually very sympathetic towards Use3D's comments on this thread. His stance can be criticized by those who feel we have a civic duty to serve in juries when called, but I always appreciate it when people honestly express their frustrations about things, even should it prove to be unpopular. Kudos to you! I have always been officially excused from jury duty owing to the nature of my work, but I would certainly go if I were not excused by the courts. Of course, I would probably be pissed off about it like Use3D, but I don't know for sure as I've never undergone the experience. To play devil's advocate here: shouldn't we have the right to protest against being forced to sit on jury duty just as we have the right to protest against war? I pesonally have grave doubts about the efficacy and fairness of our justice system (i.e. what about vicitim's rights?); and I am definitely against capital punishment. There's no way on God's earth that I will vote to send anyone to an execution. Ain't gonna happen. The whole concept is barbaric and I'm opposed to giving the State the power to snuff out inidividual's lives. Shouldn't we be allowed to consciencously (sp?) object against the justice system just as we have that right in times of war? What do you guys think? -
Who do you wish Lee Morgan had recorded more with?
connoisseur series500 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
This was difficult for me to answer as I haven't heard Lee Morgan on many of these selections. I voted for his work on "Love Bug." All the soloists cook on this session. However, it has to be stated that Lee really doesn't add anything new on this session. He just blows good. "Love Bug" is one of the best Rare Grooves that I've ever heard. One of my favorite cds. -
Maybe not so stupid; I don't know what a BLOG is either.

Ha! Ha! Good one, Ghostie. -

You mean you'd like to think that someone would find your lawyer worth listening to? -
I can name at least three which don't: Duke Pearson, "Sweet Honey Bee" Bobby Hutcherson, "Live at Montreux" Big John Patton, "Let it roll."

Same here, Catesta. I've been summoned a few times (like, everytime I vote in an election!) and I excuse myself based on the fact that I am in sales and have no salary. I don't have a company that will pay me my day's wage for missing the day. No socialism in my occupation. It's raw capitalism baby! -
I have some conns, I need some conns!

How you coming along in your search, Mark? Seems like much of your desiderata is obtainable. -
Have Mosaic or BN Sales Been Hurt?
connoisseur series500 replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, I'm still jumping on some of the new reissues as they come out (such as Patton, "Got a good thing goin.'") I am, however, reaching saturation point with the oop stuff. I'm near the end! This has nothing to do with the closing of the board however. Seems like people are still exchanging stuff. I sure am. -
This is probably heresy, but I don't care for Eric Dolphy. I do, however, like Booker Little. I have sold off/traded all my Eric Dolphy, except for stuff where he played as a sideman. To me, the best Dolphy I've ever heard was his contributions on Coltrane's Village Vangard sessions. I am not saying that the guy is without originality or talent, but I just don't care for him. I also strongly feel that Joe Henderson outblows him on "Point of Departure." My favorite Booker Little is "Booker and Friends" (if I've quoted it correctly here.) Just great playing and great compositions. He played like he knew he didn't have much time left.

Pistons Eastern Champs
connoisseur series500 replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I think the Sixers will represent the East this year, but the West is so much better. Also, other players will have to be able to score besides Allen Iverson. He can't shoot 21 for 30 every night. -
Upcoming NFL draft
connoisseur series500 replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Hey Mnytime, Change my mind, I don't think Mcgahee is going in the first round at all. He will slip into the second. He probably won't be able to play at all in 2003 and there's too much other interesting talent out there. Word has it that the Steelers are showing interest in RB Johnson out of Penn State. -
Most interesting/favorite James Spaulding context
connoisseur series500 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Man, these are getting tough. I almost went for the Duke Pearson, but on second thought, the early Hubbard sessions were superior and more consistent. -
Most interesting/favorite Miles Davis (1964-68)
connoisseur series500 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
This one is surprisingly easy for me to answer. I love ESP. Do I need to repeat? I love ESP; I love ESP. Miles Smiles is second. -
Sam Rivers. Problem with this game is how to keep up with what's been said already. Has anyone chosen Sam before? Anyway, we can have an updated history list of the names selected?

Cool link, Jeff, Nice to know you!

Upcoming NFL draft
connoisseur series500 replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Great analysis! Mnytime. I doubt that NE will spend a first rounder on a running back. They recently picked up in free agency the starting fullback for the Chargers who is a great blocker and claims partial responsibility for Ladanian Tomlinson's year. He'll block for Antoinne Smith. First pick will go for one of the defensive tackles and the second first rounder will probably be someone like Kwame Harris, OT. They could very well trade both picks to move up as well. I think Mcgahee would be a great pick up for anyone. Do the Raiders need a runner? I also see him going towards the end of the first round. I don't think he'll slide into the second. The "experts" say that the Bears will take Suggs. The Lions will take Rogers for sure, and the Bengals will take Palmer. After that we don't know. I would personally wish to see the Pats trade some of their picks in order to move up and get a "star." Perhaps there's a team high up who needs some depth and could accept some middle round picks plus a first rounder for a high first round. We'll see. No matter what, NE has had a good offseason with their free agent acquisitions. Belichek is smart with the x's and o's, but he's also very smart with personnel. -
NFL draft is coming up. My team is the NE Patriots and they are stocked with draft picks. Latest news is that Tebucky Jones will be traded to the Saints and the Pats will receive a third and a seventh round pick in this years draft along with a fourth round for next year. That means that the Pats now have 2 first round picks, 1 second round, 2 third round, 2 fourth round, (can't remembe how many fifth and sixth rounders, and 3 seventh round picks. Trade anyone?
