  7. Probably incorrectly, but I always have this feeling that the Baby Dodds solo records are far too often overlooked by "general listeners" because they are kind of "obscure" in so many ways, and you know, it's easy to think (and I'll be honest, I thought it for far too long) that they would sound like "novelty" items to a "modern" listener, but whoa, no, FUCK no, they are some beautiful, substantial works to be awed and pondered in terms both long and short. I'll even go so far as to say that I was a fool for taking so long to getting to them, so anybody who hasn't yet done so, you're a fool too!
  8. Wherever you are, hope you're there!
  9. Maybe your demand exceeded their supply and that part's either not formatted or uploaded yet.

  11. As long as this is intended to ask "does a recording of this event exist" and not "can somebody hook me up with a copy?", it will not be considered a violation of forum rules prohibiting overt solicitation of unofficially issued performances of officially copywrited material. Going forth, though, please take note and proceed accordingly.

  13. Baby Dodds. Seriously. Listen to the various Baby Dodds solo records and tell me those aren't full-on compositions, and/or that they weren't at the very least "very good". And more praise for Joe Chambers here. And Tony Williams, especially latter-day, when that was what he really focused on.
  14. Shelly keeping it real, not that there would not have been other good choices, but Max...you know. Good to know, thanks.
  15. I went ahead and ordered all three Neon Art discs...I'm pretty much set on Art Pepper personally, how much I know, how much I feel about it, so these are indulgence purchases, not inquisitive ones. It's just that him and that band are so much fun on Vol. 1, hey why not treat yourself once in a while? The main thing past the music was the covers, those covers are really cool.

  18. Much appreciated!
  19. Interesting, thanks. Do you know if Shelly himself suggested Max for the gig or otherwise advocated for him specifically?
  20. Had a listen to Volume 1 and am downright tickled. Great band flowing freely, and Pepper is a total gas, he's working that shit!

  22. Never thought about it, but somebody had to have been George Mikan's coach.
  23. What I enjoy about this album is its hardness. Not vulgar, not garish, jut hardness in every regard, the band, the arrangements, and especially Hodges himself. It's sometimes easy to assign him to the "exquisite" bin, and ok, definitely belongs, but this guy also had a knife when he needed it, always.
  24. Maybe one of the "Plays Ellingyon" things? If this turns up on CD at an affordable price, I want it. Earl Hines is a happening player, and yes I mean "is"!
  25. Yes, kudos seconded here as well, marvelous resource for both targeted education and casual perusing. Why was Shelly Manne so unavailable that Max got a steady gig out of it?
