Apart from that, family night at the symphony, who saw that one coming...

Trane with Miles in Paris in 1960 is, for me, a sci-fi like experience, you want to know what time warping ahead forward and when back again, that's what that date is. As the tour goes on, Trane pulls back a little, probably out of fear of people dying and shit, but I do sense that Miles was in awe at Trane, that's why he begged him to make the tour, because he so seriously wanted that, especially as he realized that he wasn't gonna have it, potentially, ever again. But for Stitt, yes, he was playing for a paycheck, but keep in mind, playing was his paycheck, and he came up in a place and time where if you failed, your paycheck would probably not be there, so...higher stakes than just "getting paid". Cats like that always paid for a paycheck, either right then, or tomorrow. Which is not to say that he never coasted, oh jeez, the man was one of the best non-big-band coasters ever. But the worst of it came later, when he was established and could afford to, the daggers weren't everywhere, too much time and competition had passed and he was a beloved club draw no matter what, so fuck it, just have a record out, any kind of record, let them know you're still alive and the gigs will be there. In 1960, the dude still had to play, even at his coasting level, especially with Miles! Pulled this out the other day, just to hear "Don't Get Sassy", totally rockindiculous stuff.

Yeah, he's one of those guys who I kept expecting to get blase or cynical about, "in the tradition" and all that, gotta figure at some point the "too easy" thing will rear up, but nope, never happened. Don't expect it ever will. In some players, the "deep skills" thing ends up being about the skills, and then, oh well, time to change partners. But with this guy, nope. It always ends up being about the deep. Hooray for Mulgrew Miller, to appropriate Boris Rose.

I think it's one of those things that is more or less a "feel good" thing in the immediate (an nothing at all worng with that), but has no lasting relevancy except in the cumulative. Of course, you don't get the cumulative without getting the immediates along the way, so...carpe diem!

How latter-day would we be talking, these Naxos records? Re: Pearl Kaufman with Oliver Nelson, hell yeah.

Exquisite: Unfortunate: I mean, I so feel the meaning and intent, but as sung lyrics...yikes! I'll pimp for this song gladly and willingly from now until the end of time. Suppose i could post the transcription I did in 1978 or so, but it's in pencil and has gotten smudged over the years. That, and I was still green as hell and can't guarantee that some subtleties weren't missed. Whatever - It's available legit and correctly, so do the right thing as far as this thing. Just play this song, somebody, anybody, anywhere, everywhere. not gonna blame Jackie Paris, though, that cat could go deep, like, to the place where you don't generally want people to know that you have, even though everybody has it, whether they'll admit it or not. "I don't need to buy love, you're a slave to my love"...and more...this is one case where singing it is just as creepy as saying it. Not bad creepy, just, you know, kinda real, ain't it...

Hey Joel - do you by any chance play "Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love", either on your own or with others? That's such a great piece...and Jackie Paris sang some pretty bad words to it, by Mingus himself, so nobody to blame this time but the originator. It should be a "jazz standard" by now, a few people have done it, but it's a long-ish form, and not everybody wants to work that hard on a one-nighter, if you know what I mean...but damn, what a song.

If you're a fan, you'll enjoy it, perhaps even more if found elsewhere with no price attached.

DIS - just curious who published the Thad/Basie charts, and when. Was it Kendor from back in the day, or somebody else, more recently?

More than compensated for, imo, by McCoy's lovely voicings elsewhere (on both this song and the record as a whole)...and the changes in general they use for every song. Listening to that record focused strictly on the Tyner/Garrison harmonic interaction is a reward unto itself! Leave it to Mingus, though - he incorporated the parallel motion thing at the end of "Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love" to magnificent effect. Has that song become a standard yet, and if not, why?
-
You tell me which one he's singing. I can't tell for sure, but...hmmmm..... Truthfully, either one works, and "distant gay traces" is at once more evocative and less precious, I think. A little faux-Franco sophistication goes a long way, and we're getting a week in Paris anyway.

Other than MVP, and maybe the Cy Young, that's pretty much how all of them are.

All this stuff takes money. Take away the funding for the attacks, and they most likely don't happen. If hackers can find a way to divert terrorist funds and can time it to where payment to some people who are even nastier than them come up empty, the problem of extermination of both attacks and attackers could well be handled as it should be - individually and privately. It all sounds so spymovie-ish, but then again, what part of all this doesn't?
