I've probably mentioned before having a late night bite with Lewis Hubert, the guy who came off the road as bari player with BB King and devoted his remaing life to learning jazz tenor, and marveling at how deliberately this guy prepared a "simple" cup of coffee...I think it's mostly about being aware of the pleasure of the moement, savoring it because you at some level feel neither its existence or its duration is to be taken for granted. There's a grace in that, an appreciation for life beyond that of the preponderent grabandget. Grace as resistance and rebellion, love it.

Yeah, strike zones have seemed kinda weird this post-season, especially out and/or down. I noticed it in the NL series in particular, but in all honesty, it seemed to have been called consistently. Far be it for me to question a guy with he bonafides of Ron Croomer, but...I've seen what the Rangers do when they're up against that kind of a zone, and they battle it, don't try to get hits down there, but just foul it off, get just a piece of it to keep the at bat alive. Then again, different team, different players, maybe Cubs feel like their guys are still being schooled, you know, know the rules before you break them. That fits with a young team. But jesus, if the pitcher knows he's getting that call AND knows that you're not likely to swing at it, hey...an undisrupted pattern will likely continue undisrupted until somebody disrupts it, know what I mean? What is that, the inertia of a strike zone?

I'd like to see a breakdown of how many times/pitches Cubs hitters were behind in the count instead of ahead, especially against the starters.

And you know, that's ok for him handling himself in his own business, it works when and where it works, and part of growing up is to learn when and where it doesn't work, right? It's leverage. But this appropriation thing is not ethical, it's just not ethical. Call me...whatever, but that's crossing the line. The history and personal character of Clifford Jordon is not his to use to create some weirdass projection about how they do it in New York. Clifford Jordan knew those people, they knew him, and not casually either, ok?? Understand that - not casually. So...line crossed. Write some fiction about it if you need to do that, just don't get all record reviewy insdierish with it. And the Charles Davis thing...Charles Davis is by no means a "major jazz star" or anything, but that dude has paid more than a few dues and has been in some extremely interesting places while doing so, and oh by the way, has been a completely personal voice all the while. And he's still alive, last I heard anyway. I like Ricky Ford pretty well, I think he grew into a pretty interesting and personal player, actually, but if you're gonna play the "the cats" game on one hand and then with the other game's hand not recognize that Charles Davis and Ricky Ford are not interchangeable, then sorry, your game has every right to be scrutinized, and somebody gonna bust one of those games, gaming commission, landlord, random act of shit, who knows, but humility lost is not a good thing to wait too long to find. How does that old German folk song go, you better check yourself before you wreck yourself, that's it, right? Old and cranky here, guilty, but screw it, sometimes that's called for in spite of.

Not having watched the Cubs much, this could very well not be the cae, but I was expecting a lot more aggressiveness in that ABs that I saw. Looked like the Mets pitching got them all frimbizzled and they couldn't find their way back. Young hitters up against great pitching in a very high pressure situation, wearing the burden of both the immediate and this historical...might have been too much this time around. But come spring, I gotta think everybody will have had time to think about it, and then we'll see where all that goes.

If he fixes the Charles Davis fuck up (pretty major, imo) and admits that his projection of skill-shaming onto Clifford Jordon is as deeply irresponsible and insulting as it is purely speculative, I'm more than happy to write the rest of it off as oh well, jazz didn't leave a will, this is what probate court looks like.

He was a regular on the jazz radio here for a long time. Never really "got" him myself, but his individuality was as unmistakable as his integrity was unimpeachable. Plenty of respect here. RIP Proof that his appeal extended past the jazz puristgeeks.

Lyle Mays goes all the way back to Wausaukee, Wisconsin, so don't blame Wisconsin? OTOH, the touring hotel show band I was with in 1981 spent a few weeks in Eau Claire for one stop, We were an integrated band, and drew stares out in public, not hostile stares, mind you, just curious stares. The people themselves were quite nice, and they had a great repairman in town, who I learned about the hard way...we did a thing on "Mockingbird" where I came down front between the two singers and played the tune out, ending with a long altissimo note that I cut off by leaping up into the air and flipping my horn behind my back when I landed. Well, THIS time...the strap broke, and the alto (thank god it was just the alto) went hurtling through the air and made some serious impact with the stage riser, which, was, like, four feet tall and made of either cinder block or iron, I don't remember...either way, BOOM went the alto. BANG went the alto. GASP went the crowd. oh shit went the alto player. So the next day, I'm in the yellow pages looking for Band Instruments, found the place in town that seemed to be THE place (I don't know if its true of Wisconsin in general, but Eau Claire seemed to be some kind of serious school band town),, walked into the store, found the repair center, and said, hey, I'm in town playing at the wheveritwas and...the guy stops me and says, yeah, I heard about that, Tough break, when do you need it back? I saw they closed at 7, so I said, can you get it today? and he said, I'll have it by 5. I was totally all like whaaaaaaaaaaaa?!?!?!?!?!?! Dude had it by 5 too, all hints of trauma removed, and oh by the way, he found a few pads that were beginning to leak, so he took care of those too. All for something like 50-60 bucks, which even in 1981 dollars was a helluva good deal. I thanked him profusely and he just said, hey, you need your tools, right? Exactly. When I go to my job, I need my tools. This guy got it, and for a total stranger. That old-world work ethic of I got a job, you got a job, we both got jobs to do, let's do them well and have all the right tools, So...I don't know about Menominee, but Eau Claire was cool once you got past the understanding of why black people walking down the street was a novelty...we did not do so well in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, or Couer d'Alene, Idaho, the latter of which we did not find out about until we got there, and the former of which we only found out after we got out of there after one week instead of the contracted two, and I guess we were luck to have gotten out of there at all,

We all know it's not a flawless set, there's room for critical comment, but that attitude...and that carelessness...not even RookieBall Matinee, more like Bush League After Hours. He actually said: Which is like....seriously? That's a professional comment? That boy must not be eating right, he's acting all light-headed and shit. Quite apart from all that, though, he IS right to call out that one Pepper solo, I'll throw in the Phil Woods solo from that same tune, equally marvelously fluent, cogent, and concise, and oh by the way, check out how Phil leads the ensemble on the transcribed solo bit...and listen to Pepper's freakishly fullsome low note when the come out of it back into the bridge. Top and Bottom!

Hey Dad, I just shit on Mr. Davis' doorstep! Ballsy, eh? Did you go back, knock on his door, apologize to him personally, and then clean up your own shit? Uh, no? That's not ballsy, son, that's just ignunt. Uh, Dad? Yes? Mr. Davis wasn't the only one. And did you... No. Son, you not ballsy, you stupid. And if you keep this up, you ain't gonna have any balls left to try and be ballsy with. You're kinda harsh, dad, gee! Deal with it, son, deal with it.

Indeed. and the way the extra material just sort of dribbled out in haphazard random fashion kinda leaves you with the feeling that there might be still more stuck back up in somebody's closet or something, ya' know?
