  2. Clever Joe Maddon with the Rays got kind of annoying, but him going full-on gangster (or Palladin, or whatever the hell he's doing with this "we don't start shit, but we DO finish it" thing) with the Cubs is really working for me right now. Cardinals probably get the last laugh, but if a team of devilballers are in the room laughing and I'm not there to hear it, does it still make a sound?
  3. It's closer now than it was when the thread started.
  4. Ok, let's have a look at that, please. And let's get this back out and push it to #1 on all the charts that are fit to print...without making any references to The Pianist Who Shall Be Unnamed, THIS is how I want to hear this type of thing done, with a very real sense of hey, I don't know where I'm going to end up next any more than you do, I just know how I'm going to kind of work my way through it, because what, ME worry? ME? You're kidding right? I'm Erroll Garner, and surprise YOU? Oh hell no, surprise ME, dammit, I LIVE for that surprise shit. Concert By the Sea (in its original form) has never really been a favorite, kinda un-surprise-y-ish, but if it gets people today to this type of Garner (which it well might, because today, for so many people, it's ALL history, so, like it must've all happened at once, right? Or at least in a day or two, because that's how long it takes me to listen to it all), then go ahead on with that. One question though...other than on his birth certificate, when did Denzil Best become Denzil DaCosta Best?
  5. Lots of baseball left for the AL West, most, if not all of it, divisional play. The only thing for sure is that those games will get played, and even at that, that's predicated on the assumption that the sun comes up in the morning, and that, although probably a sure thing, is not an absolute certainty. Just sayin', shit can happen. My son asked me if I'd rather face the Yankees for one game or the Jays for a series, and I went with the Jays. He told me I was crazy, and I asked him, ok, you make the post season with hopes of advancing. When do you NOT come up against the Jays? I mean, I know there's scenarios, but realistically? And besides, would you rather be a legitimate Division "champion" (albeit an overall weak division) or a lameass "second Wild Card team". Have some pride, son, have some pride! Calling our KC correspondents - what 's this I hear on MLB last night that Greg Holland is experiencing a sudden and disturbing loss of velocity? Is that really a thing, really, and if so, what is Royals Plan B for the post-season?
  6. I file mine under "W" for Nancy. But with Cannonball/Nancy, that one goes under "A" for Cannonball. Why? I'll take a wild guess and say that although both bands had equally strong identities at the time, Nancy shifts the music more with Shearing than she does with Cannonball. Mileages are gonna vary on that, I'm sure.
  7. Just got this email, and really, I have no complaint about any of it, it's a historical document, part of American history, and this package for this price...no complaints. Yeah, weirdass packaging, kinda (to this point) samey music (but that's ALWAYS been my impression of this album), but hell, 14 bucks is not over-priced in even the most bizzare of Bizzaro Worlds, and lord knows, even if there is more "stimulating" Errol Garner records to be had, the guy's been on the wrong side of the verge of forgotten-ness for a while now, so let the floodgates of rediscovery and reappreciation now be opened.
  8. I generally file those under whoever the leader was who was under contract to the label. But in the case of Wes & Jimmy, that's no use. So I file them under Wes because he gets top billing, and because, let's face it, Jimmy Smith played with a bunch of other guitar players, and how many of them got ANY billing. Failing that, I use the reflex test - when I think of recod X, whose name comes to mind first.

  10. Johnny Otis had, very quietly, one of the more amazing lives of American music, very much of it as a "local" artist. These later remakes might have had global distribution, but the real target audience was anything but global. I'll advisedly go so far as to call him the Horace Tapscott of L.A. R&B. Ace Records is not paying me a dime to advise any and everybody that this is a supremely essential record:
  11. Early Perkins, with Woody's band and the Grand Encounter date, was very, very special. Float indeed, I swear, nobody else had that going on like he did. He kinda leveled out a little after awhile, probably inevitable, and certainly not a bad thing. But that earliest stuff, oh my god...Warne had it it, but in a different way. Perk seemed to have that grasp that floating was predicated on having space on all sides of you, not just in time, or just in sound, but in every way, presence, to float means to be ther and not be there at the same time, perhaps that the ultimate lesson of Lester Young, how to be there and not be there at the same time. I've always loved his solo on "Pomp Stomp", an otherwise trivial piece of "swinging big band" from the Woody Herman Capitol days. When Perk plays, it's suddenly - and quite briefly - transformed into a whole 'nother thing. Woody had any number of good to great tenor players of the "Brothers" school in his bands over the years, but for my tastes, none of them were as transformative as Bill Perkins. http://www.npr.org/player/v2/mediaPlayer.html?action=1&t=1&islist=false&id=126915691&m=126907415 And do what you gotta do to get this one:
  12. The EP in question that contains the alternates, I found with no difficulty on Musicstack, from a great seller from the UK, and a totally reasonable price (shipping cost more than the record). Can't say that I find the item for sale anywhere right now, but it does turn up from time to time, and is a great "object", as well as a musical treat. The first time I played it, it was like, wow, worm hole or something, parallel universe. So, collectors who have fun with that kind of thing(a 45 sounds different than an LP, always), take note/heart/whatever, it is obtainable. Not at all, totally different. The alternate is pretty uptempo, quite a difference! My bad, it's the alternate of "Almost Like Being In Love" that's a radically different tempo.
  13. Since I bought this through Amazon Prime, it's now available on my Roku on the Amazon Music "channel". I listened through the first 8 cuts last night while unwinding for sleep, and maybe I was just restless, but it was one of those things where although I knew what every song was, they all sorta ended up sound identical, if that makes any sense. Not sure if this is gonna be something I listen to more than once or twice. OTOH, lotta music left, and I laugh at the idea that I can listen to the entire package without cracking the cellophane.

  15. Surely this will prove to be a dog for the ages.
  16. The ball, the game, and yes, he got it. I think he scared Matt Williams back to the dugout.

  21. Whoa...that would be some kind of a read (no pun intended)...the guy was in all kinds of trenches at all kinds of times.
  22. If Sonny Rollins was Charlie Christian or Lester Young, this release would be Jerry Valburn...except that Valburn at least had the balls to put his name on his thets. "Solar" is, like, what, a system? Like Lydian Chromatic Concept? Or How To Win At Blackjack? Yes? No? I still do not know who actually stole this from the RCA vaults, or how, or when. I know who first told me about it, and they might be a suspect, but I don't think so. Being in the front line of awareness does not equate to actually doing the deed. So this would be Jerry Valburn if somebody had dared to just say, oh, look what I found! Instead, it,s all, uh, this got here, somehow. But nevertheless, this has been a heroic theft, although a cowardly release, so right and so wrong at the same time. And oh yeah, that "Oleo" on Disc Two is one of the biggest SonnyMindFucks I've had in ages. He starts it faster than anybody in the band can sustain and as it setlles in to as up as it can at that particualr time, Sonny gets all "shit, I wish Max was here, then we could play FAST" and just...unleashes. Up a gear or two. I think at this point, Sonny was still working on incorporating all that he had learned about the horn in his off time (which was a pretty massive amount, and learned past perfection). At times,he seems to be practicing while he's playing, and ill-informed "populist" notions to the contrary, there is nothing at all intrinsically wrong or self-indulgent with doing that. It's a perfectly natural part of the process. The goal, however, is to get it to that next level, and on this take, it's full-frontal IN there. And interestingly enough, as I heard it, the "Solitude" that precedes it is not quite. Which is not to say that it's not absurdly good, it is, but it's..."destinational". This "Oleo" is.."arrivitised". It's a creepyasspunk issue, but sometimes life is right in spite of/while still being wrong. Ambivalence, equilibrium, stand AND fall, choices are not always options, Boris Rose took, Jerry Valburn thieved, and yes, I have plenty of both men's work. What would be REALLY nuts is if it was Sonny himself who leaked this shit out. Sonny Valburn Rollins, you live long enough, hey...
  23. Scherzer! He wants it. He fucking wants it! You can quote him!

  25. fwiw, I finally worked up the resolve to put it on the shelves today. Everytime I saw it lying around over by the player, it went in, and every time it was over, I would chide myself to put it up, c'mon clutter, & backlog both building up, lean forward, etc. but no, not until today, and even at that, I make no promises that it won't come back out sooner than later. Gotta get through this EuroMusiPorn Sonny Rollins Village gate thing first (bought it used b/c the tracklist and my legitimately obtained illegitimate copies of the music show that it has a few other things...we'll see). But for real, man, this thing should be nominated for a Grammy. Life is not fair and Grammys don't mean shit, but let's pretend that it is and that they do, ok? All concerned have had a very real "autumnal" triumph of the most visceral variety, frankly kicking damn near everbody's ass that's in the "game" now. Attention MUST be paid, dammit. Hello reality, wake the fuck up. NOW.
