Sonny Til And The Orioles Live In Chicago 1951 (Uptown)
JSngry replied to JSngry's topic in New Releases
Don't think so, and yes, definitely but I don't think TV footage counts (in this case). Which perhaps raises the question, were there any radio variety shows aimed at any audience on which these groups might have appeared. No air shots around? -
Been discovering her work in bits and pieces, quite randomly, and liking it a lot. Also found out that I totally missed her stint as Composer-In-Resided with the Fort Worth Symphony, but willful ignorance comes at a price, no doubt. Anyway, I like her stuff so far, and apparently she's having some fair success...am I wrong and/or is that wrong? Feel free to gush and or vent, according to your wont.

Coleman Hawkins Moonglow w/OscarP Trio (Jones/Hayes)

That hit with Mickey Baker is some of the damnedest tenor playing I've ever heard. -

Age 13: Then: As recently as 1999 she was a hot redhead: Not sure why that looks like a Gaither's gig, but oh well,

At the dog park today, three girls, all about 9-10 were playing fetch with Fido and a tennis ball, two at one end, one at the other. One End Girl decides to throw the ball up high, upon which one of the Other Two gets under it, then panics and cringes and runs away as it comes down to her, upon which the other Other Two, without missing a beat, and with no taunting whatsoever just says all matter-of fact-ly, "you should have caught that" and then runs over to get it herself. LTB & I kept on a-walking, but I couldn't help but notice the hidden smile on her face. Mine was not so hidden. Either way, love you OldSchool girl, always follow your gut but love you too, NewSchool Girl, gotta use the head when the gut starts getting off. Y'all gonna get it worked out amongst yourselves, we're counting on you to do so!

Amazing video of autistic child playing rural blues
JSngry replied to blind-blake's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Apparently blind, not autistic. -
I'll go all the way to the end, Sirius notwithstanding, but no big deal. I've just recently heard the recorded post-Sirius live gigs (mostly on YouTube) and it's pretty intense to me to watch this old warrior go out on his own terms, beaten, perhaps, but in no way defeated. Coleman Hawkins, jeez.

@ the 1:13:00 mark here: No way this is 1962, right? Somebody read a "2" as a "7", surely.

Sonny Til And The Orioles Live In Chicago 1951 (Uptown)

Flamingos...yeah, but I'm still not sure how much of that zone is just getting lost in the infinite reverb(s)...good place to be lost, though, and those tempos...yeah. I think that anybody who played or otherwise hung out in African-American bars in the late-40s early 50s knew those Ravens' records. That would be like hanging out in a honky tonk in the 1960s and knowing George Jones records, it was something that just happened by osmosis, ya' know? -

What I dig about the Ravens is that they could play it soft top and hard bottom with equal intensity. The whole yin/yang thing, Soft top: Hard bottom: Those guys were just so damn musical. Them, the Orioles, and the Moonglows (and after, them, The Dells) hey, if that's all there was, I would be blissfully contented. -
Piano trios, like comedy, are one of those things that people of otherwise convergent tastes can get all kinds of divergent about, so yes, mileages definitely vary. The lightness is what I like. The space they create is indeed light, but its also, I think, a very well-balanced-between-the-elements light, a pastel that is not necessarily "greasy" yet is very well lubricated, if you will. As far as trio "construction" models. It sounds/feels to me like the hardness of Oscar Peterson filtered through the "equal parts" deconstruction of Ahmad Jamal and then ran through the overall sunshine of King Cole. Again, the resultant lightness is what I like, how they create a space of their own and fill it effectively and efficiently as per their group esthetic.Neither over- nor underdone, just right where they want it. It's a happy sound, and those album covers are all happy too. Per BN principles, packaging matches music. Music aside, I love this cover:
