MLB 2014 Season - Always Take Your Glove To The Ballpark!
JSngry replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Bucs making sure I get to bet on time tonight...thanks, I guess, but was hoping for at least a better game. In the meantime, don't bother showing Miggy the money, he's not wanting it: http://espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs/2014/story/_/id/11625438/miguel-cabrera-detroit-tigers-sign-paperwork-playoff-bonus Good luck, Tigers! -
Charles Lloyd - Manhattan Stories (two 1965 concerts)
JSngry replied to GA Russell's topic in New Releases
Maybe so? Don't know. But there's an extroverted sunshine-y surface to this music that's not at all "1965 NYC junkie"-ish, and I say that very advisedly knowing full well that there's no such real thing except as a broad generalization. One thing for sure though, if he did have a habit, it didn't take all his money. That dude, when he took his time off, he invested in some Big Sur real estate and went to chill out totally flush. If he did that and was strung out, hey, kudos, nice work if you can get it. I also remember Dave Liebman telling the story of how Charles Lloyd was his Big Jazz Hero that he could actually be around in real life, like he was a Charles Lloyd Tenor Groupie, and that one of his (Liebman's) biggest thrills was driving Lloyd around to buy a Maserati. Liebman kinda dismissed it as the youthful hero worship that it was, but, still, this is where Lloyd was at financially. Not broke, not bitter, taking the money and running with it. Again, nice work if you can get it, but if in 1965 NYC Jazz World, not the sort of thing that gets you in with the in-crowd, if you know what I mean. Yet and still, there's some very good playing on this collection, and Pete LaRoca (another one of Liebman's youthful heroes, and there's a not yet fully told story of all the young white jazz musicians of mid-late 1960s NYC and who they were hanging with in their formative years...certain names keep popping up, and LaRoca is one of them) is dealing, as is Ron Carter. It's almost like a good Herbie Mann band, that one with Bruno Carr & Miroslav anchoring it, only Gabor & Lloyd are at a much higher level than anybody in that band (Sonny Sharrock, different game altogether, so do not compare), and Ron Carter is bringing his A-game too. It's just...totally out of sync with the prevalent Blue Note/ESP/Etc vibe that stereotypically defines that time/place. totally. And not in a bad way either. -
I hear what you're saying, but Zoot could play, now. Refresh on that Loft Jazz thing, the jam sessions. Dude had no shortage of detail there. I think a lot of times he "coasted" in a Sonny Stitt type high-level way, but like Stitt, when he felt like it....up several gears, or more, ya' know?

Charles Lloyd - Manhattan Stories (two 1965 concerts)
JSngry replied to GA Russell's topic in New Releases
Having a listen to this as we speak...impressive enough, to be sure, especially for the Szabo/Carter/Trio. Lloyd himself, too, better than most of the Columbias & Atlantics, less gesture, more playing, although that's a relative matter, not an absolute one. I've come along with Charles Lloyd to the point that I think I more or less completely understand why both the deriders and worshippers feel as they do, so for me to say that this release is maybe a notch above the norm for Lloyd probably means nothing, but that's what I'll say anyway. That, and, this music, this band, in NYC, in 1965. not enough drugs or politics in it to take root in that soil, so the move back to California and the formation of the new band and the whole Flower Power appeal was likely every bit as natural in some regards as it was contrived in others. Same world, different places (and spaces) (and speeds). And finally, hello Pete LaRoca! -

The comments about Ayler & Beefheart are as refreshing and spot-on as are the ones about Cameo & The Cars. -

I would not want my wife to go through my record collection and write about it, any more than she would want me to go through her closet and write about her shoes. Those are things that we have by ourselves for ourselves, and although we will sometime share in the end-result delights thereof, that's an offshoot of the their existence, not the reason behind it. I bet they're a cute couple though. -

Hey Royals, YEAH! Hey Oakland, thanks for taking on the how the fuck did all THAT happen load, we were damn tired of it here, and were wondering what took you so long. Enjoy! Royals, please, just go and get those Angels, they're relly not all that, just maintain focus and aim to make Sciosia pout every chance you get. It'll be fun. And don't keep me up so damn late this time! Oakland, phaw, for two years I was all, they ain't that good and we'd play just that much worse than them and, well, ok, then, good enough. And then this year, early on I was, oh fuck it, ok, guess they are that good, and right about then was when they started looking down. See folks, just...don't look down. Now, what I really want to see is a Tigers/Pirates series, but Royals will do just fine, if it rolls out like that.Just no Angels, please. HA! Oakland lol at Oakland. -

Well now, looking a little further, the dude's record collection seems pretty lame too (plenty of "good records" in there, but nothing that betrays too much more than somebody who appreciated the best/better of the obvious...no harm there, but, uh, yeah, oh, hmmmm), so its as much his fault as it is hers, maybe even more. I think I'd like her better with a pony tail, actually. all the girls in the commercials who are getting my attention have pony tails, so if she's wanting attention, that's what I'd recommend, not sillyass "chick" record reviews. That's just doing everybody a disservice, especially her. Otherwise, maybe learn some shit and then form an opinion, slowly. -
Dude, they stay all worked up on the local news, especially Meredith Land. It's because Texas connexus, and she's the biggest connexuster of 'em all.

I think i liked it better when squares didn't bother trying to understand, or more accurately, thinking they needed to understand, that life owed them an explanation they could understand for every damn thing, and just went on with their business. Nothing wrong with being square, plenty wrong with being wrong, so just drive through life like you do on the road, slow traffic keep right and everybody gets to where they need to be, each in their own way, ok? No tailgating, and no passive-aggressive driving the speed limit in the far left lane. Plenty road for everybody unless this shit happens, and then, ok, you gonna make me have an opinion? then ok here it is, fuck you. Satisfied now? And see, that's what passes for "passion" these days. lol at that. -

I confess to not knowingly knowing "Memphis In June", just looked it up on YouTube and got Hoagy's & Nina Simone's version...I think my time for grabbing hold of this one might have passed. Seems like the kind of song you hear once, say, o, j, ok, and then never miss it again. Of course, if I lived in Memphis (pleasurably), or was named June and had Memphis in me (again, pleasurably), I might feel differently, but if "if"s and "buts" were candy and nuts, then every day would be Christmas, and just as living hell would be if everyday was Friday, then so, this. -

60 years from today somebody somewhere will be saying "A. J. Hinch". Or maybe not? I'm not above making the occasional risky bet for amusemental purposes, but...think I'm gonna let this one ride.... -

Not feelin' anybody in the AL except Detroit & KC...generally feel the O's but if Nellie wanted a ring, he shoulda caught that ball when he had the chance and laid off that juice. Forgiven, but not forgotten. Not feelin' anybody in the NL, period, but if Nats or Pirates break through, that would be good feelings, I suppose.
