  2. Oh, I know who he is. Phylicia Rashād's brothr, also played on a mid-70s Louis Hayes Muse date, iirc. And I think I have an old Lab Band "Spring Concert" LP, '69, I think, that he takes a solo on with one of the bands. Also have that Muse leader date, it's a good enough "late night" album. Just did not know he was still around. Not a name you hear every day, or every year, or even every decade, sometimes.
  3. He did a monologue in a character based on Zutty Singleton on his first SNL appearance in 1976, and prefaced his entrance into character with a little bit about growing up around jazz and jazzmens...might have mentioned commodore, not sure Wonderful stuff, still fondly remembered here, although Billy Crystal as a whole is somebody with whom I've long ago had enough.

  7. I mean, you watch old tv shows and sooner or later (and the older they are, the sooner it will be), there will be Peter Leeds. At some point, I just had to stop calling him "THAT guy!!!!!!!!!" and learn his name, who he was, because, yep, there he is again, Peter Leeds. And I quote: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Leeds I mean, damn, that's a gig a day (@ 7 days a week) for almost 22 years. And oh by the way: and So, yeah, Peter Leeds worked. A lot. Hooray for working, Hooray for Peter Leeds, American!

  10. Steve, I'll wish you a happy birthday if you promise to not dwell on the past that has cumulated into this day.
  11. Damn, that's a cat whose playing I've definitely heard but whose name I'd never have recognized if you'd not have pointed it out! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muruga_Booker Cheers for (and to!) the educational element of sharing vinyl listening!

Sounds like a good road trip to me!
  13. No Perry Robinson, Richard Bock, Amos Garrett. or Michael Brecker collection complete without it. Other than that, it's one of those "hey man, I really dig what you're trying to do" things, alas. There's moments, fleeting moments.
  14. When the drums turned yellow, or so they say. You know how people hear with their eyes, just like how you taste with your nose.
  15. How many records did Wynton Kelley & Charili(e) Persip make together? Those are two one-man big bands right there, put them together and on the same wavelength as they are there and DAMN. Billy Root feels right at home in there too, for real.
  16. Ok, that's the kind of proof I was hoping/looking for that it is the "other" Don Wilkerson. Thanks!
  17. http://www.corbettvsdempsey.com/2014/04/01/album-george-davis-scapula-bop-acetates-chicago-1949/ Apparently nobody knows who this guy really was or who all is on the record, but he talks and plays so you can create your whole world, or at least a novel, and likely get it as right as not. Or else you can make your own homemade acetate record and leave it to get lost for more than 50 years after you become obscurified by your own life's destiny, and then this can be your record. But unless and until, this will be the one for that.

  19. One of those records where you wonder why more people didn't pick up on this and know exactly why they didn't pick up on it all at once.
