  2. Yeah, that Fortune thing came out of left field. The closest I could come was Sam Most. GEEZ! And I will say that if I'm going to misidentify anybody as Dexter, I'm glad it's Yusef, and not some new breed imitator-specialist.

  5. What's so Uhhhh...about this jsngry? It's so damn...angular. And the sailors are maniacally goose-stepping, except for the guy down in the corner who looks like he's about to get a bayonet in the gut while holding a plate behind his back. And there's a midget girl poised to collect a urine sample from the flying goose-stepping sailors in a champagne glass. and the color-geometric combination is, like...this should not be happening, please don't look, you will not like what you see, so I'm all like, "Uhhhh....I agree, so why did you put it on an album cover then"?

Yeah, that's too much the price...but "agile mind" in the Bud Powell sense? That's the word I keep hearing, but having only heard the later stuff, not the music I'm hearing.
  7. They thought "Lonesome Road" was a gospel song? Seriously? Fail, documentary makers. The first time I knowingly heard it was by Chris Connor with Maynard Ferguson. I thought it was an embarrassing gooeycrap-pseudohalfamuch of a song then and I still do. One of those "you don't have to believe it, you just need to possibly believe that whoever is singing it might believe that somebody might believe something more or less like it at some time" feel-goody things meant to not offend anybody for fun and profit. As for Sister Rosetta, I've never been that "touched" by either her gospel or her secular work, although it's always felt to me that she meant the secular stuff and believed the gospel stuff. Advantage secular, then.

Up, b/c nine years later I've still not been able to get with her playing. Any differing opinions here?
  9. I don't think it's getting released right now...just streamed on a soundcloud.... But there does appear to be video of the concert on the Youtube. Not "pro" level, but now we know it exists in some form. Oh, don't think it's all smoothed out like the Black Byrd LP. It's not. I was pleasantly surprised about that.
  10. They got a new one by Aaron Neville, so I guess they're going there.
  11. And that's the thing...I don't really consider it to be "smug" if you're representing the truth...it's kinda like the old "if you got it, flaunt it" thing. I got no real problem with that. To me, "smug" is more like when you're self-satisfied but somebody could easily come along an knock that smugass look off your face without too terribly much effort. So to that end, Johnny Guitar is just BAAAAAD, nothing smug about it. Did he in fact have the real mutha for ya'? Why yes, I believe he did! But this is not my game, so I'll play by the house rules.

  17. Pudge in his prime was totally freakin' awesome. Then he had an injury, after which he was still very, very good, but... btw...that article was written by "James" Gentile...I remember Jim Gentile as a not-spectacular gloveist, so who is this guy to talk, eh?
  18. One to play a static, grounding part, the other to play a more moving part, that's typical. Or one to play arco, the other pizzicato. On Free Jazz, Haden plays in one tempo, LaFaro in a more or less double tempo. Atypical would be for both to be playing the same type thing, either tonally, speedwise, register, etc. That a big lot of mud in a big lot of hurry.
