sickening penn state football allegations
JSngry replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My power to reason tells me that there's a lot of area in between forming a lynch mob and doing "what the law requires" - and nothing more, especially if you have power and influence with which to do it, which, unless he was a Macy's parade balloon, Paterno certainly had. Leaders lead, followers follow, and cowards...do neither. Anybody can be any one of those under any given set of circumstances. In this instance, Paterno pretty much cowardized. Again, I'm not out to crucify the man or his life's work. But this is definitely a FAIL. Hell, he himself admits as much, now that he's had time to "reflect"... -
Glenn Ferris, where you can find him, which is often in some unlikely places. Albert Manglesdorff, of course. Ray Anderson generates a lot of controversy (or used to...), much of which I understand, but his work with Braxton might well do you just fine. Roswell Rudd, of course. If all you've heard is the "blowouts" with Shepp, you've not heard the full Roswell. Don't know how "out" he is (that's always subject to where "out" is for each listener) but Dick Griffin's work from the 70s is warm, soulful, and not at all "boppish". I'm sure there's more.

Point? Point is, if you're a leader and something like this comes to your attention, you need to lead, not hand off the technicalities, step back, and say "all done, I got work to do, see ya'!" And if you're not a leader, then why you making all that money and getting all that glory? I know real worlds can get complicated and political and all that stuff, but good god, you get a report of one of your underlings sodomizing a 10 year old on school property, it's pretty much time to lead. I've no doubt that Joe Paterno has done a lot of good things for a lot of people over the years and has been a true leader in many ways on many occasions. But this, this is just on big giant FAIL. -

So, is/was PAterno a living, breathing, salaried leader, or is/was he just some Macy's parade balloon? -
You pay for this stuff? You got more disposable income than I do, about which all I can say is congratulations! As for "quality" and "pretty good sound"...ever look at how much of it that does have that has been released by somebody else beforehand, already prettied up? And how much of it that doesn't hasn't been? See Ubu, earlier, again. Serious question - do Public Domain laws compel things to be sold. or if something is truly, fully (i.e. - publishing as well as ownership of recording) , in the Public Domain, can it just be given away?

It is worth keeping in mind, though. Shady Gradys are everywhere in all walks of life, even within families, and they all operate in pretty much the same manner. So, it's not just about Pujol, it's about a way of doing business in general and about consumers needing to realize that they'll only get as good as they'll accept. Pujol is just the specific at hand. It's a universal matter, though, be it music or be it leg of lamb.

Threads are public domain, and this one has Bill Chase getting his crotch grabbed. The people have spoken, your laws don't apply here! -
That one leads back to the paywall. 1 - Means of acquirement of a lot of his "material". Obviously some is legit, but just as obviously, some is not. Somebody offers you tapes and you "assume" that it's a legit offer from the actual owners? Uh, yeah...stories abound of the exact opposite happening, often involving Pujol directly. People "have the tapes", not owning them, looking to move them like the fences they more or less are, and Pujol asking no questions whatsoever, "assuming" in the most euphemistic way possible. Ask around...go ahead, ask around... 2 - Equating "legal" with "legitimate" 3 - Consumer "settling" for inferior product and hailing the provider as a hero. Other than that, it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood. (and oh, btw - I am not "assuming" that the "bootleggers" are making a lot of money. I am assuming, however, that they are making enough to keep a set of profitable businesses operational and ongoing.)

How do I reconcile it? Easy - I admit to allowing greed and curiosity override my sense of right and wrong. Simple as that. Don't pretend. I try to make it up as much as I can, but we all make our deals with our own devils, ya' know?. That, and I get as many "end copies" of Fresh Sounds material as possible through non-paying means. I don't do this for new releases or for reissues which have had some kind of real value added. Now that there's the Internet, I can get needledrops and cassette dubs for free instead of paying for them. But that's another discussion, already had. Pujol needs to save his money, I need to save mine. Ubu asked the right questions earlier, and I'm pretty sure he knew the answers before asking them. The discussion I've been trying to have here is about the hows/whys of this big need to "legitimize" Pujol rather than admitting that us and out ilk and him and his ilk are in a junkie/dealer type relationship, with the dealer willing to sell us any damn thing and with us willing to buy it, say thank you, and ask when we can come back for more. Everybody has "indulgences", nobody's a fucking junkie. Bullshit.
