  1. Hey, that's all I'm saying.
  2. Not to get too "disrespectful" or anything, but I played a reception for Prince Charles (he was sponsoring some medical thiong or soemthing, hell, I don't remember) in Albuquerque ca. 1982-83, right in the most dire depths of the then-current recession, and Merv was Master of Ceremonies for the affair. He told a series of "I wonder what the poor folks are doing now" jokes that, while warmly received by those in attendance (pretty sure it was a $X0,000.00/plate affair, that's what the sponsors were putting out anyway), made me have a bad feeling for this guy that hasn't gone away yet. I mean, he was being really catty - INTO it - about shit like unemployment, street people, lay-offs, etc, and it was all I could do to keep from hollering out something like FUCK YOU BITCH, YOU AND YOUR GODDAMNED ROYAL PONY BOY! But I sure as hell though it, and still do. Proper respect fully given for the accomplishments (and they are notable within that realm), but...
  3. My son is really into this stuff & sent me the clips, so I don't really know, but I believe it is. Drum corps and percussion ensemble.

  5. Up for the new week. Certainly not "jazz" related, but if you're into (or something) rudiments and how far they can be taken, this guy's pretty amazing in that regard anyway.

  13. Hey, I'm such a poor typist that I actually do that type stuff w/o realizing it. Does that mean I'm supracool?
  14. A stealth job of the highest order!
  15. Exactly. What used to be a funny idea for a joke has come to pass and how come I ain't laughing? Tell you what though, that whole drum corps style of marching has taken over all of the bigger/better high school marching bands around here (how are things in your town?). When Charlie was in high school, I remember going to the first Friday night came just to see the halftime show and expecting the whole symmetrical, "military"(?) style routine I had done (and had learned to design back in music-ed classes; If I ever decide to fall back on that degree, I'm gonna have to totally retake that class...) with good old sonata-from marches and stuff, and.....no. No no no noooo NO. It was this "abstract", asymmetrical "drum corps style" stuff that has apparently taken over sometimes in the last....whenever. Can't say that I ever learned to "love" it, or even fully "appreciate" it, but in the sense that anybody doing anything that I don't understand really well and purposefully without leaving behind a residue of destructiveness is always going to leave me feeling just a little...curious, hey, I stuck w/it for 4 years. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. This is the kind of "marching band" routine that would have gotten cats fired and/or institutionalized back in my day, and in less than a New York Minute. Now it's winning awards and shit. When/how this "transition" ocurred remains a mystery to me. Go figure.
  16. Yeah, that's a trip. Best I can tell is that it's a rim/stick manipulation in the left hand.
  17. I distinctly remember being let down by that Storyville debut side of his, becuase like some here, I had been asking myself WHY HASN'T SPAULDING DONE HIS OWN DATE? WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? Well, ok, he finally did, and.....maybe like Larry says, it was too late, maybe the "lightning moments" had passsed, never to return. For a while, I was picking up a lot of his latter-day leader dates used in the < $5.00 range and felt that they were priced right. But even then... Still think (and I'm not hearing any real dissension here) that the Ra-thru-very early 70s run saw him playing at a level worthy of a certain level of respect, but that beyond that, the respect becomes more and more..."professional" in nature than admirational. But I'd not want to be in a jam session with him and get him pissed of or otherwise indignified, because he strikes me very much as one of those guys who could sleep through an earthquake but could waste your ass with the horn pretty darn quickly if you he ever felt like he just had to.

  20. Although not substantially disagreeing with the gist of what you're saying, "A LOT of others" is perhaps overstating the case. I mean, relative to who all's gone to NYC and made a few (or more) sides, yeah. But relative to the # of people, good, bad, indifferent, and all points in-between & beyond, he deserves a little more proppage than that. That's kind of an "insider's secret" about this music - even Spaulding's level of...distinctive & often pleasant competency is a bitch to achieve. "Medocrity" in the grand scheme of things it certainly is, but it's a very rarified level of mediocrity, if you know what I mean.I don't really expect "civilians" (or in yer case, EDC, honorary-by-means-of-earning-it backstagers) to appreciate that, much less give a rat's ass. I mean, they got no need to. But still, familial pride compels me to point out that Spaulding is a little bit more than some assembly line hack who's there to be a cog in the machine and nothing more. Or even when he is, it's usually a pretty hig-level cog and a pretty high-level machine. You wanna put, say, J-Mac on Schizophrenia and see what happens? Something, I'm sure, but would it have worked the way everybody wanted/needed for it to to be what everybody wanted/needed for it to to be? Unlikely, which you can mae a pro and/or con case for is that a good thing or not, but the deal remains - Spaulding came in and did it the way it was wanted/needed for it to be done, for better or worse or what difitmake. Can't just everybody DO that, doncha' know? No neeed for love, but at least let's recognize, that's all I'm saying.

  23. Actually, the period around Decoy is of interest to me. To me, that was the last period where Miles was coming from a primarily "creative" place than what soon shifted to a "presentational" one. I enjoy both, but... Unless you got no use whatsumever for 80s Miles, I think that Decoy might get overlooked & might repay further investigation. There's some intersting concepts opening up there that didn't get followed through on, I think, at least by Miles. Check it out.
  24. What's with all the "features" on the profile page anyway? Should I be "adding content" specifically for there or what? I'm discombobulated!
