  1. Hey, it WAS a swingout after all...
  2. So she tells you... Seriously - I don't give a hoot one way or the other. indigo seems to be bright, open-minded, articulate, musically curious, and good-humored. A no-more-information-needed winning combination if you ask me!
  3. Yeah, for real. The tales of the phone calls are reminiscent of what Gigi Gryce claimed, but apparently that can't be proven.
  4. Hurricane Sue was apparently not a pleasure to deal with, if you'll remember...
  5. It's the increased technological/sophisticcation of marketing. What used to take years for the industry pimps to figure out now just takes a few weeks, a few months at most. Then, as a sci-fi buff friend of mine likes to say, "it's just a question of engineering". The music industry is more of a true industry than it's ever been. You got your raw materials (artists/producers), manufacturing plants (record labels), and dissemenation outlets (radio) all on the same page with a product that has a ready, willing, and not too terribly discriminating audience (thus the literal formulization of the product, which did not exist in the earlier days of the genre, at least not overwhelmingly so). It's a business model of incredible efficiency, I should think, no matter what the quality of the results are.
  6. I bought it on one of those Rose labels about 25 years ago, might have been called THE DYNAMIC DUO, can't remember. Pretty sure it's turned up on several "budget" labels since then. Sound quality is typical early-60s braodcast/bootleg - not "hi-fi", but good enough to enjoy w/o incurring aural strain. It's material to have, for sure. That was one helluva band, to put it mildly.
  7. You can blame Organ Jazz for that matter. That genre embraced funk (of the R&B variety) at face value long before any other.
  8. I wonder if Hastings rotates their stock between stores or something. The one in Wichita Falls, Tx had a shitload of Audioquest last year, multiple copies of titles. A few weeks ago, they had none. Don't think there's that many jazz fans in Widhita Falls...
  9. I honestly don't know how many. Probably more of the ones I need to know to work, and less of the ones I like but never get to play.
  10. (gulp)
  11. The electronic thing is accurate enough for the sake of general argument, but the backbeat thing, well, dude, c'mon - "Moanin'" had a heavier backbeat than anything fusion ever produced. Now, if you want progenitors of today's smooth jazz, you can go back to the Mizell Brothers productions for Blue Note in the early 70s, The Kudu label (CTI'S "commercial" wing, although as the decade progressed, CTI itself turned more "pop"-ish), and the work certain Atlantic artists (Les McCann in particular) in the early 70s. The stuff all started out innocently enough, but as it became institionalized, it became formulaic (or the other way around...), and soon enough became a product to be regulated, measured, and mass-produced, just like canned soup and paper clips. Reliable, but lifeless, offered to the market place instead of for the people. From "populist" to "popular" is too often a small but fatal leap from lively gregariousness to terminal whoredom, I think.
  12. "May I obey all your commands with equal pleasure." My kinda guy.
  13. Yeah, exactly. Thought I might've been tripping there for a second....
  14. Whoa.... Tough way to get that kind of bread....
  15. Well hey - Greetings From Texas. But I'd advise you not to sit too close to anybody's feet on this board. No tellin' where them shoes have been.
  16. I'll do it for the anniversary of Marvin Gaye's death, but I have to be reminded of when it is.
  17. And they BOTH hated Joyce!
  18. Well, that's not TOO far from working w/Jerry Lewis... Tonight's movie - The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone. Never seen it in, at least not more than a few clips here and there. Don't know if this is necessarily my bag, but who knows? Anybody got some good and/or kind words for this one?
  19. This keeps getting better!
  20. ...and who wouldn't be??? Oh, you might be surprised... http://www.deardiary.net/show/diaries/124074/1107129600 http://www.averyant.com/AverysSavoryJournal.html http://www.livejournal.com/users/ashliebear13/ http://www.winglin.net/fanfic/standthere/chapter_9.shtml http://members.tgforum.com/sthomas/may02.htm Tip o'the iceberg, I suspect....
