  1. I've been meaning to check this one out, especially since I found out that Arif Mardin produced it. This type of music is more up his alley than Norah was, and he's got a bag of tricks that's as mighty as it is unrecognized by the "general public". That good, is it, Al?
  2. We moved to Plano (after a year-and-a-half in Tampa) in 1991. Before Tampa, we had lived solely in Dallas and Garland, and my interests were purely urban. So I didn't know about Frisco until the first time I drove 121 and saw the "establishments" in question (and yeah, I was seriously all "WTF?"). Can't tell you about the history or anythng, but I do remember that this was about the time that the whole "Legacy Corridor" was springing up, which of course had a spillover effect, which of course also resulted in a massive "cleanup" of Frisco's more. The cleanup was accomplished with very litlle fanfare, I do remember reading a little something in the Observer or someplace about it, but that was it. I'd like to know more about the "Golden Era" myself, because, yeah, that stip on and just off of 121 was as blatant a strip of cathouses as anything I've ever seen anywhere. What Frisco's "famous" for now is Stonebriar Mall, that velodrome out in the middle of nowhere, and the Frisco Roughriders, the Rangers' AA team. You'd think that the presence of the latter would at least insure a market for the old goods and services, but if it's there, it's waaaaaay underground. But Frisco to McKinney is still rural, although it's getting developed, slowly but surely. Plano's built out, and people still want to live north of Dallas, So Allen, Frisco, and The Colony (now THAT'S a wierd-ass place....) are catching the spillover. And there ain't a good record store in the bunch. A pox on 'em all.
  3. A Purple Herbie? Awwwwww, that's SWEET!
  4. It's not there any more, Clem.

    John Young

I can't tell you right off hand how many records I've got w/John Young on them, but it's more than a handful, and he's a gas on every one of them. Totally got his own style, yet it seems definitively "Chicago", if that makes any sense. Just as Von Freeman embodies the "Chicago Tenor Sound", I think that John Young does the same for piano.
  6. Campbell's.
  7. Nooooo.... More of a "chicken or egg" type.
  8. Sorry, I didn't realize that that was what that one meant. My bad, completely. Sorry.
  9. Double standard? God, I hope not. Then I guess I don't get your point. Referring to Millie's rap on LIVE & UNCENSORED where she basically says the same thing you did, only in a Millie Jackson type way, which is considerably more, uh... "colorful" than how you said it. Now if you you don't know Millie Jackson, at least from her prime years, you're missing out on some darn good stuff. Good Southern, Stax-ish R&B that kept modern as the 70s wore on and never really succumbed to disco and such. Plus, she's the prototype for today's "sassy" female hip-hop artists. She WOULD talk shit on her records, to men and women alike. Not in the least bit bashful, if you get my drift. Check her out, she's great.
  10. Can't fins an image of the Norelco Santa anywhere. Humbug.
  11. No. I'm just curious as to which answer people will select. The questions are not identical!
  12. My bad, it's the Norelco Santa. You know, riding down the snow on a Norelco. WAY cool.
  13. To get to the other side.
  14. Sorry, "I don't give a damn" available by write-in only.
  15. How long has it been on ABC? I remember watching the original airing (and a few after) on CBS. What about the Norelco snowman? They had that when I was a little kid!
  16. It's a bag and a pipe, and he's Scottish. So, what's the big deal?
  17. Don't forget to mosey!
  18. Double standard? God, I hope not.
  19. Wham-O needs to tell them boys to back the hell off...
  20. Who knew that Rachel was really Millie Jackson?
  21. 'twas but a joke, a hypothetical worstcase ethicanol sceanrio. I trust you implicitly.
  22. Only if you give The Porker Davis Group a gig!
  23. None. But from the landlords.... That's Rod's story to tell, should he choose to.
  24. Actually, the guy who owned/ran it, Rod Stasick, is a member here. I've asked him to drop by this thread and reminisce. The store was a gas, what can I tell you? If you wanted it, he'd get it. And what he got that you didn't even know you wanted...Plus, it was a great place to just hang out and shoot the bull. All sorts of people dropped in, players, fans, freaks, you name it. Ain't nothing like now, at least not for this type of musical eclecticism. BTW, Rod's a terrifically talented cat in his own right. Do a Google search and see. Hell, here's a link! http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22rod+stasick%22
