There's no reason to have to travel 500 miles. There could be a worldwide network of affiliated libraries, museums, or other such institutions where access to the files could be purchased for an annual fee, or included in existing membership dues. But if you want to prevent against the Jodys of the world, it will have to be onsite listening. Open streaming just means that it will be grabbed and sold by and to those who have no shame.

Little Penny Pooperton - Not On The Floor, Please!!! Ballads for the exasperated, told from the perspective of the exasperator. Quite powerful in small doses, but pretty overwhelming for a full listen. One is left pondering the age-old question - in the end, does it matter if they can't help themselves?
-
It kinda did, actually....Miles playing like Louis Armstrong (in his own way, of course), just struttin' with some hot flare/flair. He was obviously having a ball on that gig, whatever it was, it agreed with him. But as a rule, yes, concord was always(!) the record equivalent of Woody Allen's mother's "flavor remover" that she put all their meals through before serving. And the exceptions only prove the rule!

Enough of the past, let's deal with the present - the systemic abuse of patients by an entire profession of their willful withholding of the proven therapeutic value of ice cream! The past is decided, but the future can be cured, perhaps even prevented! SCOOPS FOR ALL!!!!

Is this going to be one of those cruises where the power goes out and all the shrimp get rotten and people having to vomit and defecate in trash bags and stuff? And then they all get COVID and flesh-eating maggots start popping up and everybody gets eaten alive except for the ones who jump into the icy ocean only to be eaten by sharks, and only one man, some guys named Shine, makes it to shore alive? If so, no, I'm not going. I get enough of that here at the house. But I will be waiting for Shine to get here. From what I gather, he's one helluva storyteller!

Sahl had a reissue of some (maybe not all?) of his Verve stuff by an outfit called Laugh.com No idea what's still available. They have a website, but I can't get anything to do there. A "problem" with Sahl is that he was always "topical, so if you don't get the references/names/situations involved in the joke, it could well go over your head today. But the jokes are REALLY well-structured, even the rants, often enough. Dick Gregory is do-able on CD though, although not always cheaply. But the product is out there.: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=divk+gregory&i=popular&ref=nb_sb_noss

Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Etc. Jazz & Other Concerts

I've only had the pleasure of hearing Quamon a handful of times, and the pleasure of speaking with him at length once. He's a wonderful person, and his approach to playing is thoughtful. No clichés from this guy, he thinks in terms of language, full sentences and developing his statements. He definitely creates that sense of "in the moment" that is sorely lacking so/too many times, all over the world (join hands, etc.) Anybody with a chance to hear him should definitely carpe diem. -
I like Elvin being up front like this...it's the closed I've heard to what it must have been like to be playing and have him right behind you. I also like the bass duets a lot, Garret & Garrison together get into an interesting textural zone, what with Garret using the bow, Actually,,,,and with the caveat that this is a "relative point" and nothing more, you could say that Trane is the least "interesting" aspect of this release...

Because it's there. And hopefully will ALWAYS be there!!!!

And this is a fatal systemic flaw of the entire industry! Ask anybody (who's not physically disincentivized or otherwise placed at risk by the consumption of the product) - Ice Cream makes EVERYTHING better!!!!!

Oh, he got obsessive about the JFK assassination, the Warren Report, and then Garrison. It derailed his career, damn near killed it, not unlike how Lenny Bruce got obsessed with his trials on stage. He eventually went kinda "hard right", but in a Stan Kenton way (or Clint Eastwood way)...always a sharp mind, even as he continued his search for somebody/something to believe in. Him & Dennis Miller would've made one helluva pairing. To me, his perspicuity is summed up most succinctly in his line about "Nixon’s the kind of guy that if you were drowning fifty feet off shore, he’d throw you a thirty foot rope. Then Kissinger would go on TV the next night and say that the President had met you more than half-way." That's a great joke, structurally, you can make it about anybody for whom it fits, but in this case, it was about Nixon. and it hit the bullseye.

Sorry, screwed the pooch when trying to combine an earlier thread I had started in Miscellaneous Non-Political (which in retrospect is cosmically ironic!) with this newer thread in the appropriate Artists forum....the first post is mine but this is not my thread, so sorry... My first reaction as well, but...Fantasy Records! 1958, pre-Verve!

I keep all my V.A. records at the end of the alphabet, chronologically. or... Under whoever's name it is I know I'll remember it for. Now, having said that...I can't remember where this one is...let me go look... I have it filed as/with Thad Jones, but it took a while before I looked there.

I did not have that problem listening either at home or in the car. Sometimes they were back there, but never to the point of inaudibilty.

...and I guess he has. RIP and my god, where are the sharp minds these days?

If you want to buy this just for hearing Trane loudly and clearly, then ok, decide against. But if you're interested in everything else that happened, and are happy to process all of that, then yeah, pretty much an essential item. Personally, it's worth it for me just to check out McCoy/Elvin/Pharoah. That triangle was soon to disintegrate, but here, they are very much on the same page. Powerful stuff. Carlos Ward's cameo is filled with urgency as well. Maybe a little shaky on the entrance, not really hitting the changes, but it's just a matter of seconds before he says Fuck Fear and just dives in. Good for him, and lucky for us!

2012, on the Jive Music label out of Austria. It's one of those "enhanced" CDs that's also got two videos on it, haven't gotten to those yet. To be honest, I lucked into this copy, I had never heard of before I did. Not a "Great" record, but a pleasant one, for sure. It'll probably get culled at some point, but not immediately, by any means! Not according to Sun Ra! LOL!!!!!!

somewhere in the 80s, Chico Freeman quite unintentionally started tuning into mid-60s Hank Mobley in terms of phrasing and to a lesser extent, tone. Not saying that he cloned or anything, no, but it was - and is - an attractive element in his playing. As for this record itself...look at it, that's what it is, no surprises there. And if it looks like something you might want, you will want to track it down, then. Ok, not exactly "turned into" mid-60s Hank Mobley, but definitely adopted elements of Hank's attack and phrase structure. Like I said, not at all unattractive.

Having another go with this....one song goes on waaaaaaayyyyyyy ttoooooooo lllllooooonnnnnggggggggggggg….but other than that, it's an invigorating record, not at all "crossover" like her last two might have been (although that's giving way too much credit to the current commercial landscape...) If she does plan on having any kind of a pop carreer, in retrospect, this could be viewed as her Hissing Of Summer Lawns...but that one didn't stop Joni, and I doubt this one will stop her. The naysayers will continue to neigh, of course they will, but this woman has an abuncance of talent and ideas, and I don't think she's anywhere near exhausting either, just as I'm sure she's nowhere near never making some bad judgemnts (that one song.....yikes....).. But here she is, and if her and Wayne are really gonna get that opera done...pay attention.
