Dusty Groove order arrive just 24 hours after amazon. Going forth, that's what I'm doing for new releases (when offered), let Bezos fund his rocket trips with just a bitty-bit less fewer of my pennies!

Bobby Ray Pimperton - The Chicago Twist Hits The Road!!! Definitely a better live act.

Eddie Sauter, maybe? Maybe? In 1955? Part of it's an A&R issue, the same one that befell Bird, a real lack of understanding of what stings can do in jazz rather than just play pads or otherwise sound "sophisticated" (and in anything BUT that), So the A&R people just want something "nice", not understanding that "nice" and "blah" are not the same thing. OTOH, Hefti did "Repetition" and that WAS a true landmark (of sorts). But I still look at Hefti as a "singles band". His hits kept coming, but over the long haul....a Greates Hits album works just fine. But Bob Freedman would have been the guy if chronology was not a real thing: Clifford's playing with those charts....yeah. There's not enough Bob Freedman in the world, at least not that I can find.

Shit be gettin hot up in there, that's all/what I hear. From a saxophonistical standpoint, though, if you can hear Pharoah on "Acknowledgement" and not hear what Trane was doing in his 2nd "Transition" solo has less clean ears than I do. Those guys were already working together before they started working together, if you know what I mean.

dude, you owe it to yourself to at some point interact with the Mosaic set of the Russo/Holman Kenton charts. Russo was never one to underwrite, even by implication, but when it was good (and it often enough was) it was very good.

Hire a background singer!

It was, and I found the whole thing too detached (in the bad way) for my liking. The Blues Alley set is waaaaayyyy too many records, but in small does, Marcus Roberts can get you into thinking that he's into something with his various metric trickeries. But in large(r) does, it's like, ok, what ELSE does he gonna gots here, and the answer is....not much, apparently. Mileages are definitely going to vary on this one, of course, but this period/band was just WAAAAAAYYYY too "cool" for my liking. Like all of the cool of the Plugged Nickel band and none of the heat, like, say, Tony with a flat-line Emotional EQ applied...all them clean suits and ain't nobody sweating. Not that it even matters now, because what hapened even past this kinda speaks for itself if you can call an impotent incoherent roar to be "speaking". But again, mileages may vary.

Hell, Gil Evans!

Too bad Bob Freedman wasn't around at the time. Then again, maybe Brownie wasn't ready to go there...

Ok, it's a wrap. Amazon FTW!
-
Ok, my Amazon is at a carrier facility in McKinney, which is just up the road apiece, about a 20 minute drive so it ought to be getting here today, as scheduled. Still, it ain't over until the tenor player starts to sing...
-
Yeah, Amazon is showing Shipped + arrived at a carrier facility. But not "out for delivery", and that's the best indicator imo. I recently had an order where they said an item had shipped and was at Location X, and then all tracking went dead. Amazon sent me a not that this item might be lost, come get your refund! So I did, and ordered another of the same thing from another Amazon seller, and then both it and the allegedly lost item got here on the same day, thus necessitating a return via a trip to Whole Foods (the specified that it had to be Whole Foods!). So until one or both of them get here, I'm still keeping the scoreboard open. Amazon is still the favorite, but sometimes the underdog has a late innings rally.
-
I unintentionally double ordered, Amazon & Dusty Groove...we will see which one gets here first. Both have sent shipping notices, but Amazon has it on the way, arriving here today by 10 PM. DG just says label created at USPS, but that's it.

Experiencing them all in real time I was relatively enthusiastic about the former, retro tho it was. but when J Moods came out I was like, is this all this guy is going to do, play these emotionally detached attempts at signifying some sort of "attitude" instead of showing some real voice? And then...no he was going do more, but it was certainly less...

(almost) Universally reviled, and I get that, but...the energy that this band puts into these charts (only one by Ellis!) is quite real...although what the quality of that energy is...not sure about that. But geez this is one big ball of burning odd-meter fuquitousness, aimed at....something. A lot of energy, and produced by Teo Macero. If the aim was to get radio play, I'm reminded of the first time I heard the Ronettes record of "I Wish I Never Saw The Sunshine":, it was like, GOOD GOD, that is so NOT going to get on the radio, it will scare people in the kind of way that people don't like to get sacred.

Robert Farnon, perhaps? Or was this done before he hit his stride? Probably not in the mix for this A&R world, tho? I hear you about Hefti...and not just on this record, and not just with strings...he's far from an "automatic" for me. But when he was good, he was very good! Really, though, Nelson Riddle.

Frisky like a mo! Two guitars (Bobby Broom and Yoshiaki Masuo), Bob Cranshaw, and Jack DeJonette throwing a party! Can somebody with access ask Sonny where he got that into to "I'll Be Seeing You"? It sounds like a verse, but the only such thing I've been able to find is the intro from the original recording by one Dick Todd. What Sonny plays goes on longer (and differently) from what Sonny plays here. But - don't actually "buy" this one unless and until a properly authorized version comes to market., it's one of those Gambit things and should be easily obtainable somewhere on Your Friend, The Internet.
