Why are you glad to have the hype called out for this movie, specifically? Or do you just like to see hype called out in every instance? No, they weren't forgotten for 50 years, but the were definitely undervalued, especially by this butthurt boomer, which in the world of commerce is perhaps even worse than being forgotten. Bottom line - they did sit in a basement, and they were all but forgotten. If that's the worst hype I have to ensure in the service of bringing Black Art into the Modern American Discourse...not too bad. Then again, for some, the only proper anditote for Black Erasure (a very real thing) is Whiny White Impotence (also a very real thing). Woodstock sucks, then now and forever. There's some hype called out, right there. Oh, Bob Dylan - voice of a demogrphic, not of a generation. More hype called out.

And what was the deal with the bonus 45 that was offered along with the reissued mail order LP? Late 70s, early 80s. I saw the ad more than once, but...no money for that then Has that 45 ever been included in the CD?

Never any question in my mind that the whole "unseen in 50 years!!!" thing was marketing hype. The existence of the Netflix footage (great doc there too) and the crediting there of it's source event should have made that much obvious. Clearly, the footage was known, and had been made available in some fashion, by somebody. Does nobody pay attention to stuff like this? No wonder hype is so easily rendered... Bottom line, though, this guy did not impress the actual owner of the footage enough to seal any kind of a meaningful deal. So, he's not claiming that he got ripped off in any way, he just wants, what, "credit"? For putting money into a deal that didn't work out for him? Why was that? The ever-popular "reasons unknown"...yeah Maybe the owner had dreams of a movie, and this guy is offering the occasional pieces of footage licensing, and then finally, somebody actually WANTS TO MAKE A MOVIE out of it? Reasons unknown my ass . Ok, you got credit now, so you and your former Crawdaddy editor writer buddy go back to being Boomers who are irrelevant to this music and this story I guarantee you that if this movie never got made, or got made badly, this bunch would not be stepping out now. He's not asking for money or for a revised screen credit (don't see how he's entitled to the former, but might well be to the latter - if he himself actually did the work), so what's his point? That he had a chance and blew it and then somebody came along who didn't? Color me...totally not interested.

https://gregmitchell.substack.com/p/was-summer-of-soul-footage-really Sounds like a not unexpected bit of whitegrabbing coulda-ness, now pay attention to me. unless the guy is owed money, and he's not claiming that he is, it's at best an interesting footnote of one more way that nothing happened until now.

That might be a bit of origin story hype/ myth: https://gregmitchell.substack.com/p/was-summer-of-soul-footage-really Still, this essentially seems like a bit of butthurt beghanding and the fact remains that no matter why the footage never got wider circulation (when it go any at all), it was doomed to obscurity until somebody came along with the right combination of motive, plan, and resources to pull it all together in a more coherent larger form than just leasing selected clips for one-offs. That person was Questlove, and marketing taglines are a fact of life, as are origin stories that engage in myth and reality symbiotically. -

dude, hell if I know...definitely something on fania, probably with Willie colon, but none of that shit is in print. and used copies, where you can find them, are stoopidhigh. Maybe just live on YouTube and keep your eyes open. He's a uniquely talented talent. That shit is magic. This is not: Even if they've spent ever last penny of Lila Wallace's money by now, they've ammased a new fortune all over again if they get paid by the yawn, and extra bonus for every spirit they suck the life out of. Here, take your life back while you can:

Let's Talk About Afro Cuban Jazz Suites
JSngry replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I like this Chico O'Farrill writing better than any of it. I bought that Verve collection of O'Farrill's "latin" stuff hoping for some revelations, but didn't get any. Certainly not questioning his cred, my god, impeccable, but...maybe the desire to be a traditional big band writer worked against him short term...his writing just seemed kinda "grafted" to me. And that was quite probably intentional, because any commercially directed fusion first has to be consciously attempted before it becomes organic. and that takes time, usually. Now, what I have yet to hear is his last work, which I has no small repute. But when it comes to "Latin-Jazz" the tricky part is never getting the jazz in, it's getting the "Latin" in. But Rene Hernandez...here's a big band, and you could have opened this sucker up for any kind of soloing and it would have worked perfectly without changing a thing. Talking about writing that is so much more than it seems at a casual listen...my god, I would practice for a year or two to get my chops back up for a chance to play just one set of stuff like this, solos or no. and those are "just" dance band charts. But hey, craft is craft, and art happens where it happens. -
My CD copy is this one, the cover of which which is as right as it is wrong...

If I was going to listen to anybody do it, it would be Abbey. At that point in her life, she could put some real meaning into it. -
If you can confirm that this new release is going to be a duplicate, please do...I sprung for the Marshmallow back when it came out, and preordered the Steeplechase ASAP. Not really looking for two of the same record. Thanks!

Is it confirmed that this duplicate the Marshmallow disc, exactly?

Possibly, of course. Also, of course, what "major" at the time would have recorded her if she wanted to be recorded? I don't see any evidence that Atlantic was pushing Max too hard, and that would have been her best shot, right? Those early 60s records pissed off a lot of people. Add to that, they both well might have been "difficult" people...but again, plenty of "difficult" people in this business (really, that business, it's different now, and only maybe for the better...)...not a big safety net to begin with... Really, how much acting was she doing in these years anyway? It's not like she was rocketing to stardom, like For the Love Of Ivy opened up a whole new world for her...and what was that role, really? A maid for whom her white employer tries to arrange a marriage to keep her in their employ. You want a career playing "modern maids"? Help? Max being violent didn't help any, I'm sure. At some point, I think, she just wanted out and to be free of all of that. She got there, but it couldn't have been easy, in any way. God bless Abbey Lincoln. What is this Elektra Japan date of 1973? This one? https://www.discogs.com/Abbey-Lincoln-Live-In-Misty/release/2636594 This is a new one for me! -

The record is 1973. It's the same lyrics as the ones sung in the movie, I recognized them immediately...that People In Me record, on Inner city, kinda hit me between the eyes back in the day. You don't forget that. Checking Lord...Abbey, and to a lesser extent Max, were "blacklisted" (and there's different stories about that, to be fair)., so...take my word for it. It's the same thing. Abbey claims the lyrics...are you saying that she didn't get that in the film credits? You do not forget something like that. -

Perhaps you should change the thread title to reflect the multi-disciplinary thrust of your inquiry. As it now stands, we're not at all interested in just the music, it seems, initial appearances to the contrary -

I have bought records at a furniture store before, but that was even before this record was made... so maybe you should be discussing this in a design and/or alcohol forum instead of a music one?
