The ones I've heard have all of the textures of the Wonder albums and none of the songcraft.Underwhelming, perhaps. Still, people like this embraced technology and its possibilities. The work they did got passed on and mattered...I doubt that whoever invented the automobile was a great driver, but there would be no great drivers without the automobile, right? So, RIP, and here's to the possibilities of machines. They don't invent themselves!

Jim Hall making an ECM record, otoh...maybe? The duet album is called Dreams Come True. It was released on Chico's own label, part of a "spree" of releases he did in the late 200xs. Some were better than others, but you know chico...there's always something there, even if it's just the sound of his kit. https://www.discogs.com/label/101807-Joyous-Shout-! Copies are still around, but it's one of those things where if you really want to get it, probably better to get it now rather than later, if you know what I mean.

LOL! Realizing that Charles Lloyd ALWAYS brought bling with him as well, still does. But it's a different genre of bling. What kind of a towel do you use to clean that up?

Chico on ECM? HA! There's a whole....cultural disconnect that would have prevented that...don't let the Charles Lloyd thing fool you, Chico was not going to be anybody but Chico, for anybody. And Chico brought some bling with him everywhere he went, overt bling. He had a jingle business going, made records like he wanted to make them. Even the earlier stuff...a lot more extroverted than the Giuffre groups were. But do check out Chico's solo album, and his duet album with Andrew Hill, those about as close to come as there is to what could have been ECM records. But they're not, thankfully. I love Chico, and do hear his influence in a lot of more recent drummers. His detail with kit tuning, brush technique, cymbal textures, mallet(!) technique...cat had a whole lot going on just in terms of drum sound. He wasn't the only one, Roy & Max from the same ear come to mind, but Chico had his own thing. I think younger people noticed, I really don't see how the couldn't. But maybe they didn't.

First time hitting these guys at any real length,,,holy shit! Swing doesn't really do it justice...DRIVE is more like it. Juices pumping w/no blockage. Is this one of those Keepnews things that got Nonoised-ed to death, and if so, where can it be heard in a more lively presentation? and Chuck's past mention of Prince Robinson come to mind on the early tracks....yeah.

The teachings of Mobley solos on Rhythm Changes

Scale thinking is ok if you're deciding what color to paint the house. Change thinking is where you figure out what all shapes the house has that you're going to paint...and maybe what other shades you can use to do it. -
The Mosaic box is a very nice package. Still recommended, imo.

The Al Lewis thing had more than a little credibility going in, though....considering the very real Tina Louise record from the same time (which is not at all a bad record)...who knows got what kind of idea back in the day. And that rhythm section would have been exactly who would have been on that record! Nicely played, sir!

Dude, the deal with the BFT is that it's your thing. Put whatever you want to on it. Not everybody will like everything, don't worry about it, just put it out there. As for the "pure jazz" thing...I think you're a "younger" guy, so you can either aim for the old folks, or you can be who you are. Me, I like surprises, old or new, something with a fresh jolt, from whatever dimension it emanates. Bottom line - it's free tunes. Can't nobody ask for a refund, right? BTW - when Dan talks about "tilling my small plot of land inside the jazz universe", he's understating what he's gotten himself into. He's going deep deep DEEP into some things that few others have bothered with. So...yeah, Dan is doing God's work right now.

In 1957, you get these guys together, you make a record, it's good, everybody's on the same page (although wtf? was Thigpen doing with that bobbydurhamshit behind Al Cohn at one point?). In as little as 3-5 years later...wouldn't happen, would it. You might get a hint that people were looking to move on by Waldron answering "What's New" with "What's Not" and McKusick countering "Woody 'n You" with "I Wouldn't". But that might be reading too much into it. Anyway, a wonderful snapshot of a very moving object.

Don't know that I've ever done a 100% "pure" jazz compilation, but yeah, thanks for mellowing on that. At least this one was short!

Chet Baker did not need to be on this record, but he was, guess he "had" to be on it because it was his date. But...they get along without him very well. That's a good record.

no, i got the Atlantic LP. Found a white label promo in a really dusty mom&pop back in the late 70s. I was like, oh hell yeah, live no more in record store orphanage, you have a home now. so I guess that makes me a really shitty record parent. It hurts to be that. It's probably here in the main shelves, just out of order...always happens when I take rows out and then put them back.

and here is where I find out that I've misfiled my copy of Horizons...but the lead cut, "Eb tuba G" is a match in timing...but I don't recall anything on that record being this aggressive...and not being able to find the freaking record now.... Well I'll be damned, it is! I thought it sounded familiar...but now I gott find the damn record, it's here somewhere, whatever that means... https://archive.org/details/lp_horizons_ira-sullivan

off the top of my head, either Joe McPhee or Ira Sullivan, but it's neither of them?
