Starting on this one, after setting it aside for other things:
-
Gonna have to fit this in while I can, might not be complete. Very pleasant trip down (mostly) memory lane! TRACK ONE - Shepp/Krog, "soul Eyes". Krog is perhaps an acquired taste, if one doesn't know there's an "accent" involved. After that, hey, all good. And this was from the time when Shepp got his change playing together, really together. Great cut. TRACK TWO - Yeah! I remember being a little underwhelmed by One Flight Up (sacrilege, perhaps?), and then the record ends like this and....yeah. Dexter on ballads, magnificent, up until the very end. TRACK THREE - Ibrahim, beautiful piece. Strangely combines currents from/to Ellington, Zawinul, and Crusaders all into one piece. Think about that, like the man said, you think about that. TRACK FOUR - Another classic! Joe at his most caressful. His "classical" studying comes into play here, his extreme control...just beautiful. TRACK FIVE - Ok, not familiar with this one. Sounds good. Very deep-zoned composition. Bears repeated listening. TRACK SIX - Ok, glommed this one. Funny, first listen, I heard that drum intro and said, gotta be Elvin...and then it obviously wasn't. What really gets be is the vibists' detail of tone, attack, and intervals, some very Monkian "slurryisms" in the lines. Details matter, and never more than when they're paid attention to! And did not recognize "Warm Valley" until the outchorus. Began to get a hint before then, but...nicely plaid by all. TRACK SEVEN - Ok....this was big on the radio back in the day. Gotta love Harold Land, always and forever. Past that....it's a record, hey. Gotta love Harold Land! If a record gets made that has Harold Land on it, it's a good record for me. Was this on Galaxy or Milestone? Evans, so Milestone. But it could have just as easily been on Galaxy. Anyway, make mine Harold Land, please. TRACK EIGHT - I do not care for that song, ever, this singer, only sometimes. But she should have had more recording opportunities after this one. She was in great voice then, and lost time is not found again. TRACK NINE - Geez, take a breath...It's not Wes and its not Benson...it's Martino, but why he did this, I don't know. Ok, I know why he did it, don't know why it had to be put out on a record, though. Helluva player, of course, but this sounds like he's trying to get a place on a CTI All Star tour or something, and he was not gonna get that gig, just because...shit don't work like that. And here, 50 years laterit's like, oh, this guy was copping Benson & Wes and no, no NO. But that's what happens when you are careless with your records, people will get the wrong impression. Don't believe me, ask Eddie Harris. TRACK TEN - Oh...this one intrigues...I know I have this record somewhere, can't put my mind on it, though. Tune sounds like a Mobley thing, but I don't think it is...STRONG playing...Slide Hampton on trombone? No, not at the end...This is one of those "don't look down!" tempos and nobody does. Crap, that could almost be Booker Ervin on tenor, but its not...can't shake the feeling that I have this somewhere, but something with this mojo, I think I'd remember it...Richard Davis on bass? I give up, gonna take it toShazam to see what comes up. Thanks for including this one! TRACK ELEVEN - No. Not now, not ever. Do NOT, Lord. Do not EVEN try. You exist because I let you, don't fuck that up, because I can shut you off in a quick minute, o? This shit works both ways. TRACK TWELVE - Herbie Nichols. couldn't be anybody else. Still recall when the whoel "rediscovery" thing began in the 70s with that "brown bag" two-fer...there's a lot of music to absorb in that one piece, in every one of his pieces. It can be overwhelming if you don't steel yourself for that. But as time has shown, you can't unhear this, and if you don't get to it, it's not because it's not there to be gotten, that one would be on you. TRACK THIRTEEN - Cecil. quite obviously!. That great early trio, Den(n)is Charles in particular. DRUMS! There's a standard in there, I can hear it but can't quite put my finger on it...almost Sweet Georgia Brown, one of those tunes/forms that starts on the VI7 chord. Or maybe not, doesn't matter, no matter, where it begins, it comes out HERE. Ok, 13 tracks, that's a lot (like if 12 full ounces of Pepsi was a lot, then this is one more than that!). but got this post in under the limit I had, something to be said for familiarity, indeed there is! Fun set, thanks for sharing! Wow, Shazam doe NOT recognize # 10. But they DO recognize Cecil! So #10 must be some locked treasure of a chest! Maybe that standard is "I Found A New Baby"? I keep hearing the cadences in different points...

The teachings of Mobley solos on Rhythm Changes
JSngry replied to bluesForBartok's topic in Musician's Forum
Meant to say "thank you!" for hearing this in terms of changes instead of scales...you can do it either way, but imo, thinking of changes gives you a better feel for the overall shape and movement of the statement, its archtechture. Thinking in terms of scales on stuff like this is just too..bionic or some shit, not quite fully human, misses the point. -

I did like it, yes. Going to re-listen right now. Ari Brown makes it for me, and Gerald Cleaver, too. It does bug me that I can here such obviously fine playing and my ears immediately trace it back to some pretty clear antecedents. Wish I could stop doing that, at least sometimes... But yes, I did like it.
-
I was hoping this was going to be the Eckstine band with Bird & Diz and Sarah Vaughan on piano...I've only seen one of those.
-
I also hear they're taking Bitcoin now. I think they all want new Teslas. So what i want to know is...can I gets the hologram of Pops playing while standing up in a Tesla, like King Of The Zulus 21st Century style? The future does indeed lie ahead!
-
What's wrong with me that first I hear this record and think it's an offshoot/outgrowth of Odyssey Of Iska or some such, and THEN I hear the differences? Ari Brown working the side keys, though. Wayne never did that, at least not like this! Besides, hey, Wayne's still there (hell, HERE!), it's not like Odyssey has gotten pimped out beyond all redeemable value, not yet, not by a long shot.

Hey, take your celebration where you find it. Personal protection against the nimrodical proliferates is cause enough!
-
I once saw it on 8-Track at a backroad truck stop. Pretty sure Stan Lewis was the source.
-
Hopefully with a bit of a celebration! I know we felt a bit of relief that we could feel good about finally having an expansion of responsible possibilities. I went inside the Kroger Tuesday for the first time in about a year. Still masked up, but, you know, hey, we're vaxxed up now. Going to a DSO concert on Saturday, maybe a chamber concert at the end of the month. Still masking up for these, but, you know, the feeling of being able to safely get out there knowing that it's the next step on the return to a normalcy...it feels good. Not quite like the first time I saw an airplane flying over the house post-9-11 and the flight ban was lifted, that was a full return to normalcy, but still...these things have meaning, so celebrate.

Between Argo & Prestige, Jacquet made some really good records in the 1960s, whatever that is supposed to mean...he almost always made really good records. On this one, Barry Harris' comp is a delight, putting that bebop stab in there, it works.

This has been circulating for years. Glad to see it getting a general/authorized release. Too bad it's just the audio, though. I have a very poor-quality VHS of the gig, and it's amazing. What happens when Frank sings "let me see what spring is like on Jupiter & Mars"....whoa. Maybe the world's not ready yet.
-
Wow, ABKO - Allen Klein! So...let's connect those dots...
-
I talked to Scotscuna this morning and he told me that the reason the new release schedule is so lite is that they're investing in holographic technology, so instead of just hearing dead people play, you'll be able to see them, right there in your living room. All of the action and none of the need to leave a lock off the bathroom door!

I don't find it at all strange that she would feel a need to run for cover against forces bent on destruction and imprisonment, I mean hell, I feel that one myself. But this Q thing? My god...when reality turns to fantasy...people surrender to fear, lose their powers of discernment altogether. It's evil. Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. The fruit I see is vile, poisonous, and is doing the same thing to its adherents that they fear is being done to others. They have turned a window into a mirror and are projecting a horror movie onto it. Oldest game in the book. I saw this mentioned yesterday as a new release? Who is putting this out? I have it burned from a 1994 Fresh Sounds disc, but with a different cover.

I saw her on an Austin City limits supporting the Coming Forth By Day record, and her voice was....not too fit. That was a really dark record so it all worked there, but hearing her voice naked like that was a bit...startling. Haven't heard anything since. Whatever it is, I hope she's still got her voice, it is/was a wonderful and unique instrument, and she had totally figured out how to frame it on her terms, a singer with a true, whole vision. A rarity in this or any other time.

I hope there's more Cassandra Wilson records in the future. I very much like what she brought to the table.

I knew of earlier Maynard threw a really weird twist of fate. When I came into high school, it was with a new band director, who was a jazz/lounge pianist. The band director he replaced was a former big band trumpet player who had spent some time with the Harry James band in the '50s. So he had instilled a love of big band, and especially Maynard, and the existing band members. so one of the kids who was a freshman with me had a brother who had just graduated the year before and who had a manner to collection. For some reason, I don't know, freshman aspirationioalism, he brought a copy of Color Him Wild to school. And guess what, he never got it back! To this day, it's crazy to me how all this music fell into my lap, totally at random. West Coat, big band, the black music from the newly integrated school system, just, hey here it is if you want it. Blue Notes and Pacific Jazz in the coutout bins, want a Coltrane record, find Transition. Didn't even know any of it existed, and then BAM, that's all there was. And then fusion...there was no escape from some kind of jazz, who knew THAT was where life was going? Life is crazy. Those Cameo records ARE good, quite good. Mike Abene and Ronnie Cuber had come on board, Lanny Morgan was still onboard, and as always, the GREAT Willie Maiden! People who don't like "Maynard Ferguson", I get it. But people equate that with the bands he led, especially the prime ones, they either ain't paying attention or just ain't wired for it. Otherwise, hey, those bands were on time.
