So...digital on an LP...that's kind of why CDs became the thing, wasn't it? Cutting out that analog filter middleman. I mean, I am coming to appreciate (if not completely understand) the object-ness of the "vinyl revival", but from an objective (no pun intended) standpoint...just not feeling a need, myself. Now, if somebody still has the AA part of the AAD chain, and wanted to work with that, hey, let's play that game, because the digital quality process did not evolve nearly as adroitly as did the marketplace process...it got there, eventually, but...that's another story. People confused lack of tape hiss with "better sound" and god, look at all the truly shitty sounding records we got stuck with. Bottom line, though - it's an amazing record, and it's great that it's getting back out there.

I liked it. It's Roscoe. He's one of "those guys" for me.

Now THAT'S what I was looking for. Thanks1 A few gaps filled at good prices. -
I remember it being "Nordic" (or something like that, I don't think I had a really deep understanding of what that truly meant, so, hey, "geographic designation" would just have to do in place of real understanding), but "steely", not "icy". Or if so, "icy heat", not "icy freezy". It was impossible to not feel it. And his records with George Russell, Esoteric Circle….no matter how you perceived the temperature...INTENSE. Myself, I didn't really sense any sort of "withdrawal" from the "heat" (be it hot or icy) until maybe...early 90s? late 80s? But to be honest, it seemed like a natural evolution, as he for whatever reason became less engaged with American players. A natural evolution towards whatever his environments and roots were saying to him as time went by.

Yeah, I remember it got a few heavy reviews, but then nothing. It seems to be one of those records that people have found and immediately lock in with or else go through life never even hearing of it. Funny how that works sometimes...

I like how the chair and coat and water bottle takes on a presence of its own in the picture. Roscoe creates a holistic environment just by being there and doing.

Laswell put out a LOT of records back in the day, on both Celluloid & Axiom, a lot of them quite interesting and almost all of them with one or more players in the mix you might not expect to find. The Tabla Beat Science records are particularly wonderful. and I got it backward - Celluloid came before Axiom and was not Laswell's label, although he was a driving force there. And between the two labels, there's an entire musical culture going on that was vey well documented. This on, should be an All-time Classic instead of an underground classic:

What was Laswell's label prior to Axiom, Celluloid? Is that the order? I definitely remember Laswell LPs on one of his labels, but I think it was Celluliod. So, did Hive Mind make the LP from analog sources? If so, I might like to hear the LP, it might actually sound better than the CD, or, at least, different, in a not-bad way. But if they used digital source tapes...neve mind, none for me, thanks.

Memory checking myself (because that's something I NEED to do a lot these days), Ask The Ages was originally released on CD (and cassette!), there was no Axiom LP? Or was there? I see the CD was AAD, so ok, maybe there's not a lot (or anything?) lost by returning it to analog...if they've gone back to the analog session/mixing tapes. Did they do that? Or are they just making an LP of the CD? Still can't believe that the CD is no longer in print. That's just immoral.

Are there any box bargains currently available?

Sounds like a place I can use, thanks, all! -
I love the dynamic range that the digital provides for this one. Playing it log/VERY loud is a beautiful thing when it doesn't push back. Had no idea that the CD was no longer in print. That sucks, and should never have been allowed to have occurred..Where are the laws in this country, anyway?

Nothing wrong with this record, but nothing right about it either. Hate it when that happens. I mean, they had a part of a very nice trio/quartet record, part of a very nice "expanded ensemple" album, and part of a...part of a "with voices" album. A part of everything, a hole of nothing. Too bad.
-
gotta ask...why would you want to hear Ask The Ages on vinyl? Especially on 45? You do indeed play it loud/VERY loud (at least I do...). All the more reason to keep it digital, imo.

I hear Hubert Laws on some of those cuts, yes. Mostly Mann, but not exclusively. Both of those records are perfect examples of "that type of thing". I enjoy them both. Herbie Mann was not a soloist of infinite imagination. But you give him a solidly built-out context, and a melody to work, he'd give you a good enough "genre" record. These are two of the primest example of that, imo.

I keep wanting to tell Jon Irabagon to maybe think about taking a breath before he runs out of air, and maybe shaping his ventage with a little conscious direction, but hey, he got the gig, not me, so good for him. Venting is a valid form of musical expression. My problem is that it sounds pretty common when done as this. On the sunny side of the street, though - GREAT to see that Barry Altschul is- and has been for a while - back on the scene. He got a little lost there visibility-wise, but, really, one of the key drummers of his time, how soon we might forget. HE sounds great here. Long may he wave! Ok, second listen, perhaps I am being harsh about Irabagon...but it sounds like there's a secret Michael Brecker down in there that could come out and play if those kids came by and knocked on the door. But ok, he's in it, to be sure, and Altschul is inspired, so all's well then. More Barry Altschul records, please.

ok, good to know, thanks. I did some browsing and alas, they have a LOT of the Blight Boxes, but enough legit side-pocket stuff that I could see an order.
