Louis Armstrong book review
JSngry replied to BillF's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Then it's best that he lived and died when he did. I think people need to get over the whole "sellout" and "Uncle Tom" stuff - there was a real reason why people had those reactions, and one should not discount them. That was a fiber of the time. But that time has passed, the greater truth has held, and no matter what it all looked like then, and no matter how legit the discomfort was then, then has passed. so let's just get on and learn the bigger lessons. Hell, let's learn the biggest one - that Louis Armstrong was bigger and better than all the shit he went through and put up with and played into. He was above all that and here's the deal-sealer - he knew it. He knew who he was, more than the business, more than the society, more than the critics, more than anybody. So let's learn that about his, and then hopefully work on getting each and all of ourselves on that path. Anything else is just blahpidation. -
Not much for Copland in general, but these are two nice pieces, especially Variations. Good, stout music,

I wonder what Louis Armstrong would be playing today as a 20-Something Black Life. Remember, he wouldn't have been born in 1900... -

In the /US, anyway, the brownbaggers have it on the tope end of the spine, just below the catalog number, The catalog number is in bold font, the 0798 is not, and might even be a point smaller. -
kinda makes you wonder....

Three music-related films yesterday, all on amazon Prime, and all worhtwhile in their own way. I don't know a lot about Elis Regina's life, but from what I do know, this film does a lot of the "bio-pic" things and is in some form or fashion "based on a true story" rather than actually being one. BUT - the actin and directing is really good, and the music is GLORIOUS. So, check it out and maybe find more about the real person. I knew the gist of the this and the music (kinda), but this doc fleshes it out and is a delight to watch. Now I see that I really need to get the first Os Mutantes records (and some others as well). And following Brazilian late-60s youthful cultural revolution, it was on to this: This purportedly is a true story, and I don't have any difficulty almost believing that almost all of it it is. Boomers who still believe in magic should be enthralled by this, the rest of us...simply entertained by how it capture that brief moment where it really DID seem that things were going to get better and change and all we had to do was know that THIS was right and everything else wasn't. All of the above are highly recommended to anybody who thinks "that looks interesting...", and all of them are free with Amazon Prime.

How you liking that Goodman? That was one of the first 5-10 jazz record I had. Side 1 is still a kick for me, still a kick.

That's how you do it.

Nobody on the commercials pronounce it the way I pronounce it. I have a very personal relationship with that sound. I am stronger than TV in my own mind. I am. I am.
