Jazz - Blamed Again!!!!!
JSngry replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Dear Steve - the article itself was not a piece of humor, intentional or otherwise. What ws funny to me was the notion of some teenager being sent into a fit of UberAngst by the very notion of JAZZ!!!! BOOGA BOOGA!!!! Jazz has all kinds of problems, but none of them should scare Little EmoBoys. And that's what cracks me up, the notion that oh dear, we have a kid that is terrified by the notion of jazz, and then, no mention of how stupid a notion that is - for anything - but that there's a LIFE LESSON to be learned here, and it's not that don't be stupid about music - in this case, jazz - but to just work through it, go with your feelings. Hell, it's this boy's feelings that fucked him up to begin with. Teach that motherfucker some rational thought processes firt, THEN let him negotiate his "feelings". Not meaning to minimalize the importance of feelings, of course, but gottdamm, you got a teenager getting fucked up because of a fear of jazz...feelings are NOT his problem!. And you know, jazz causes interracial dating, maybe THAT'S what he's afraid of, the little neo-Nazi punk. -
Jazz - Blamed Again!!!!!

You guys crack me up! Jazz is to blame for EVERYTHING, as it Rock and Roll, Hip-Hop, the waltz, the tango, you name it. If there's bad things to be blamed on music, the blame will be placed. In this case, the poor little emoboy got all emoed up about jazz, because, you know JAZZ!!! Poor little emoboy! Nobody had the old school adultness to tell him to just get over it, or even better, stay the fuck home if you're going to be that much of a drag. I LOL'ed at the original article, and I LOL even harder since nobody seems to see the humor in yet another iteration of the historical inevitable. (and a bonus guffaw for one guy thinking there's a "religious" discussion underway). You guys crack me up! -

It isn't. And your point here is? -
another thing found on my iPod.

There will be other options. Ok, I almost like that a lot, like a parallel universe where Ellington & Basie were the same thing (and that's something you could say about Thad Jones once he got his own band, but that was in THIS universe). Turnoffs are the solos (good, but not really driving the point home), and the essentially dance-gig functionality of the chart's development, seems like it never went one way or the other. But if the rest of the record is like this, I'll check it out. If this is still Mousey Alexander on drums, kudos!

Any Interest In a Post-Roulette Basie Verve set?
JSngry replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Pulled out my iPod for the first time in a while (don't ask) and found the Basie Command sides on it. They're a LOT more fun in a LOT more ways than I remember. Broadway gets the nod b/c Jaws + Roy Eldridge, but no worries. -
Mundell Lowe was chunkin' very nicely as well. Who is/was Francis James?
-
Heard the name, probably the playing, but not consciously. The dude be driving! Who else is in the rhythm section, if I may ask?

Well, shit. I typed "turd" instead of "turf". My bad. Water the turf.

I'm encouraged enough by what you're bringing to light here to see if I can't find some cheap copies of some more albums. I think by the time it's all over I can get one really good compilation to make by myself/for myself. So, thanks for advocating, you've really got me to relisten and reconsider. It helps that it's not a lot of money to do so, but still... Now, having said that...trying and failing to find ANY rationale for that "John Henry" thing, wtf? What was the object of that game?
-
Ok, football season's over. If the pissing contests continue, the thread will be closed. If any of the over-capacity bladders have some useful analysis with which to water the turd (like James v. Dolan debating actual game tape reviews), that would be value-added and much appreciated.

Interesting. It sounds like it would be a challenging, fun piece to play - if you were inclined to finding fun in that type of thing. Don't have to tell you, not all players are. I can only hope that when our DSO gets it's new people in place and they get to fully drive the bus, we see programming like this as part of the overall diet. The John Adams gig last weekend was the only time this season that our DSO is programming a living composer. When asked what he though about that, Adams response was "I don't know what to say about that." I think he does, but didn't.

I'm really liking "The Loop", but is there a reason why it seems to be a commentary on "Northwest Passage"? Who's the drummer on this one? Don Lamond" Kicking that big-band ass, whoever it is!

How was the piece received, by audiences and by players? And how did this work come to the orchestra?

This article confirms my impressions of the Vault LPs I saw in the bins back in the day - somehow affiliated with Atlantic, the graphics/design often had that look to them, especially on the back covers.
-
I think of them as cheaters, sure ("almost nonexistent", exactly. Pro jobs, both!). But I also look at them as an organization that refuses to be out-prepared by an opponent, to not take advantage of every non-overt opportunity to secure a competitive edge outside of their clearly superior legit skill sets, individually and organizationally. So, do I like them? Hell no. But do I respect the hell out of them? Hell yeah. It's professional sports, I'd be a sap to expect that everything and everybody was totally on the up-and-up every time, no different than any other aspect of American (and beyond) life.

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?

Gee mom, it just followed me home, honest!

I guess either you love it or hate it. Either way, timeless. If subtlety of touch (by all instruments) was a crime, this would be a felony, life without parole.

Full disclosure - I am a past PEZ user.

"Foogly" = "fugly" = "fuck ugly" = "fuckin' ugly"

The Concord neglect to bring their Gene Ammons catalog into the 21st century may or may not be acceptable from a business standpoint, but as an esthetic proposition, it's a near-capital offense. But sorry, Steve, Ubu's foogliness appraisal appraises more than correctly in my estimation. Foogliness and cheapness, ARRRRRGHHHHH!!!!
