P.L.M., I received the CD today. Well packaged and it sure got here fast. Thanks.

I've just heard about lala.com on a couple of organissimo threads. I guess I subscribe to the "if it sounds too good to be true it probably is" theory. Obviously it would be great to be able to listen to something before buying. So, what is the downside here? What am I missing?

For my taste, Denmon Maroney's Udentity is one of the best new releases I've heard in years. I bought it several months ago and still play it often. Read a good review here: http://freejazz-stef.blogspot.com/2009/02/...t-udentity.html. Clean Feed does release alot of interesting stuff. I'm afraid they could break the bank if I wasn't careful.

WorldB3, I really agree with the final sentence of your last post. For my taste, ECM put out a large number of terrific albums in that period. That was the stuff that got me looking in the "jazz section". Of coarse it was LPs and the record store at the time not the internet.

Point of Departure - Issue 23

Thanks for the post. -
Thanks for the BFT, Bill. It was great fun. It also caused me to listen to a number of albums I haven't heard in awhile, Julian Priester, Cecil Taylor and a bunch of Don Cherry. I really liked the Simon Nabatov track. I have read a number of on-line reviews on the album it comes from. They range from very positive to not so much (Mr. Dorward). If you don't mind, what is your opinion of the album?

I listened to some achives of Mr. Barton's kbcs show this morning. Very nice, thank you. I seriously doubt if I will ever be listening live though.
-
This is off topic, but can your radio show be heard on the net?
-
My tastes go toward the more "adventurous" (I like that description) as well, so I didn't think your BFT was that far out either. From your hints, I am going to guess that the piano on 2 is David Haney. Don't have a larger point of reference but I would have never guessed that from just listening.

I actually have quite a few albums with Han Bennink on them and I couldn't hear it either.

I thought Quiet Nights was a good title, it put me right to sleep. I guess I will give it another listen. I've only bought one 2009 album, Udentity by Denman Maroney but I think it is a terrific one.

Man, some of my favorite artists and albums. I do like the vibe. I was listening to Oltremare by Carlo Actis Dato.

Looking Ahead - Cecil Taylor Quartet One of the tracks on Bill Barton's BFT inspired me to listen to this album for the first time in quite awhile. My rhetorical question for the day is why didn't Earl Griffith become THE vibes player?

Karl Berger / Woodstock Workshop Orchestra - Live At The Donaueschingen

It was really too nice outside today to be listening to music but I did anyway. Polarization by Julian Priester (ECM).

Nice collection. I have a few semi-coherent comments and I think that I actually know a couple of tracks. 2. Really pretty music. I don't know any piano/trombone duets. Juilian Preister? 3. I thought maybe it is one guy overdubbing. But that's probably just because it reminded me of John Surman (particularly the baritone(?) sound) and I know he has done some solo stuff like that. 4. Great tune. Because of your hints, I'm guessing this might be by Herbie Nichols. I really like the piano playing. Bass is awfully good too. My favorite track (outside of track 5) on the BFT. I'm really interested to find out what album this is from and hope it's not something out of print. 5. I can name that tune in 5 notes. This is from Dave Douglas, Tiny Bells Trio album, Constellations, one of my favorites. I listen to this CD often. Great tune as well, I believe it is The Gig by Herbie Nichols (causing my comment on 4.). Not an expert on Jim Black but for my taste this is the best playing that I've heard from him. 8. Well, I don't know what to say here. One time through I hate it and the next time I think this is pretty good. On one listen I thought I heard similarities to the Braxton/Crispell/Hemingway/Dressler group. Next time not so much. ??!!?? 10.Kind of an African rhythm to this. Totally familiar sounding from the start. I think it is by Karl Berger on piano with Dave Holland and Ed Blackwell. If I'm right on that, this is actually my least favorite cut on a very good album, Transit. I was on one of my LP playing jags a couple of weeks ago and just played this one. I guess I like Mr. Berger's vibes playing better that his piano. 11.From an LP maybe? Some more nice piano. The rest of the tracks weren't the best for me but I'm going to listen further. Going with my comments on 8, apparently my opinions can change from day to day.

Crystal Silence - Gary Burton/Chick Corea

The Mass On The World - Leo Smith Trio (Dwight Andrews, Bobby Naughton)

Scratch - Kenny Barron with Dave Holland, Daniel Humair

Little known classic! I am kind of a vibes fan to start with but I really like Al Francis' playing. I only know of one other album that he plays on, New Ideas (I think) by Don Ellis.

Jazz Bohemia Revisted - Al Francis/ John Neves/ Joe Hunt Locomotive - Buell Neidlinger's String Jazz

I didn't know Cleve Pozar was inimitable. Actually, I'm not sure I even knew what inimitable meant until I just looked it up. I think this is the only album I have heard him on but he does good work. I particularly like the vibes/marimba cut.
