I recently got this as well. Nice album. Didn't realize they did another.

Grachan Moncur III - "Exploration" (2004!!)
dsgtrane replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in New Releases
It's available as a twofer along with his other BYG album. Just picked it up the other day after having it only as a burn of a mint condition LP. Have to check again but I believe the LP burn sounds better as I'm not all that thrilled with the sound on the CD. Sound aside, it's a great session. -
PS-I much prefer Pharoah as a leader than with Trane.
-
Conversely, he may have done you a favor. If not for Pharoah you may have married her, had a messy divorce that cost you most of your assets along with a huge monthly alimony payment and, as a result, currently be living in a box under an overpass. You owe him a big THANK YOU!

Good choice. I love that album. Gee, two guys who are into Sanders. My feeling is that whenever he does Trane material, I yearn to listen to Trane. Hence, it's available. I hear 'ya however if anyone's entitled to play Trane, it's Pharoah. This is a beautiful album IMHO.

Played it yesterday. Greatly enjoyed it. Strong arrangments, my favorite of which was the updated "New Africa". Moncur's soloing sounds a bit tentative but still still sounds fine to my ears. Glad I picked this up. -
Good choice. I love that album. Marty-Are these more from Bill's collection?

My copy just showed up in today's mail. -
"Three For Shepp" is among my favorite non-Coltrane Impulses. The ESP's are right behind that IMO. Some of the subsequent stuff has its moments but are a big step down IMO.
-
Good but they don't blow me away as much as some of his other stuff.

I totally missed this comment the first time around. That kind of explains Woody's decline. It's depressing in a way, but I guess Dexter and Woody were never really "buddies", at least not in a close sense. Therefore it is somewhat "excusable" that Dexter stole Woody's woman, or maybe not... I missed this too. Ouch! BTW, as for "Homecoming", I think Woody should have gotten equal billing. IMO it's just as much his recording as Dexter's.

I've got both that and "Night Music" as well. Prefer "Master". Sound is better on it too IMO. Both were fairly easy and inexpensive to find. Bought both, along with a new copy of "Stepping Stones", sealed a year or so ago through the Amazon shops. Less than $30 for the three I believe.

I'll be in in NY that week and am deciding between seeing him, the Mingus Big Band at the Iridium or a show at Tonic.

I've got Volume 2. Sort of a mixed bag. The Shaw and Gordon stuff is good but most of the other stuff sounds rather dated, not surprising considering the time period. Interesting enough I bought the album for some of the other musicians, long before I ever discovered Woody and Dexter.

I met Moncur around 6 years ago. At that time he said he wanted to try to get back into music. Glad to see it's happened. Lineup and tracklist look great. Plan to order a copy for myself tomorrow. -
How was the show? Have tix to see him in two weeks. Curiously, Stanley Clarke is listed as the bassist though.

Logic and record companies rarely seem to go hand-in-hand. Hopefully it will spur the CD version of "Passion Dance" as you guys mentioned. I've got to think Tyner's one of their better sellers. As for the Tapscott, thanks! I believe it's by the same artist as the Dolphy avatar used by ejp626. There's a guy who's catalog need a real dusting off. Seemingly would make for a great Mosaic or Mosaic Select. Most of the Nimbus West and Interplay material has never made it to CD. What has is usually extremely hard (and expensive) to find.

Thanks for the heads up on "Counterpoints". Hadn't realized it came out. Just ordered a copy.

Title says it all. Looking for a CDR of this long-overdue-on-CD Tyner Milestone LP. Trying to help out a friend (and myself of course) who is looking for this. Plenty to offer in return. Info: Passion Dance Copy of artwork (if possible) would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance!
