  8. Festival is near the end so far here are the highlights of a year that turned out better on the field than on paper. 1 Wayne Shorter with Imani Winds, incredible music with one of the best quartet of our time and beautiful fusion between classic music and improvisational music. Sorry for my machism but the girls quite cute also 2 Mike Stern with Dave Wekl, Danillo Perez and John Patitucci. For all my misgivings about Stern earning a slot in the Invitation series. You have to be impressed by the enthusiasm of a Stern who looks and acts like a kid half his age. Those four guys meshed very well, nothing ground breaking mind you but four who had a ball playing together. 3 Stefano Bollani solo Great pianist near the level of a Jarrett but with a way more enjoyable personnality. Likes to clown around, his impersonation of a Paolo Conte like singer was the funniest thing i saw this year. 4 David Binney with Brian Blade, Scott Colley and Craig Taborn. As good as it sounds on paper it was even better in the real world, Binney finally got the slot he deserved and ran with it fine. 5 Yun Kun 5, swedish quintet showed us once again that the Swedish jazz scene is not just about ECMish mood music. 6 Mina Agossi. A real very, very fine singer. Sand with only a bassist and a drummer, she covers the rest with great flair and a very very very sexy voice. 7 Keith Jarrett trio, great set, kept the histrionics at a minimum, except when people took pictures. Played standards throughout the evening. 8 Hans Bennink and Anthony Coleman. Great free music set, they put all the stunts, drummer started his show with boxes over his kit, during this Coleman put duck tape on the strings. A whola lot of fun. The few lowlights 1 Jack Dejohnette, his gig with Scofield and Goldings was too long and lacked conviction, plus the sound for those outside the first rows was abominable. Can not say he was fantastic with Jarrett either. 2 Sound at the Invitation series at the Jean Duceppe theater. No dynamics whatsoeverwas way too low, pretty suprising considering that the leaders for this series are Richard Bona and the afore mentionned Mike Stern 3 David Binney's clothing. Memo to David wearing a baseball cap during a gig is not a fashion statement. Plus wearing a Yankees hat in a town where most people are Red Sox fan ain't a great idea either. Buy some clothes dude, you play like a million bucks and you dress like a whino. What's left for the remains of the festival Bill Frisell, Robert Glasper and a few fill ups.
  9. Phil Hartman Dave Foley Maura Tierney Newsradio anyone ?
  10. People take sometimes too seriously sports, great to see good senses prevailing.
  11. Had a CD of them but nothing prepared me for the live band. Livin' in a city where we too often get to see reduced bands for economical reasons, it was fun to see a whole band on stage. And talking about a whole band this was a humengous band, two drummers, two guitarist, one electric bass, one flutist, a horn section with two trumpets and a trombone, a string section with two violins and a cello, an harpist, one electic piano, a keyboard and electronic player, to top it off you had 7 girls doing backing vocals, plus the leader/singer/ guru. They come into the show all dressed the same in what looks like an army suit. Music wise they aremind me a lot of The Flaming Lips. But what really standed out was the attitude of the group. They do all sorts of choregraphies during the songs, interacting with the fans, looking at them directly, singing at the top of their lungs. A few times during the gig instrumentalists danced with the crowd. The leader/singer works the crowd putting them into a frenzy, he forced about everybody who was sitting in the sides of the scene to lave their places and move into the front of the stage where they were no chairs. To say the least it was a very intense show. So about after 75 minutes the show was over and it was time for the encore, they came back through the crowd all dress in long white robes, told ya it was a cult. The group went for a very cathatic Lithium, the encore lasted an hour they played until midnight. The only bummer was that there was about 100 people in a place that could take about 1000. Another case where the absents are always wrong.

  17. Thankfully, the Wilburys don't have a "spirit box"... Great one, where is the emoticon for rotfl ? Gotta say i enjoyed the album when it went out, i bought the cd version when it was on discount at 5 $, was pretty suprised a few months ago to see it being sold for 14 bucks. The girl at the store explained that it was on out print, guess i lost my chance to make a killing. Music wise, i can understand why some people would say it has not aged well. Depending of your age there are certain styles of music with certain production values you used to listen when you were younger but now you can not stand anymore. For my case, about everything about the synth leaded 80's pop sounds nowadays like an horrible blast from the past that i never want to relive.

  20. Jarrett was in Montreal and he was in fine form, played standards. First part was mostly melancholic except for a spirited the way you look tonight that seemed to suprise the rythm section who were pretty mellow tonight. Second part was more eclectic, especially loved his version of Epistrophy. The pianist had the peek a boo style in full effect, crouched at the piano, head down, he would at times while still playing turn his head towards the audience grimacing or smiling, with him it's tough to tell. Despite a piano who was not tuned completely properly, he remained on good behaviour until the end of the show. During the encore he blasted out people taking pictures, a fine show that last near 2 hours and a half.
