Twins player Kirby Puckett passes away at 44

Very sad news. RIP Kirby. -
Yes, but some very good films have won, so I'm not sure your point...

Global Warming, do you notice it where you live?

To make matters worse, one reseracher I recently heard said that even if all emmisions stopped tommorow, that the the current cycle will raise tempatures another degree over the next hundred years before it stabilizes. But overall, I agree with SS. Not to sound defeatist, but one can really only blame human nature. This goes far beyond Bush or Clinton or developing third world countries. One can, I suppose, blame the technological revolution and all the things that came out of it. The world - and human/social evolution - is a complex machine, and for every action is some reaction, often delayed for generations. This is a serious crisis that affects all of humanity, but I'm not sure it was unavoidable. Instead, perhaps, it's more of a "necessary evil" in the overall evoltion of the planet. Hopefully, though, not in the same way that the dinosaurs had to go extinct before the rest of us could develop... -
You sure it wasn't John Lithgow?

Agree with you, Lon. I really liked Taylor a lot more in the beginning, though, as his Ray Charles-Joe Cocker schtick is wearing thin. But damn, you can tell the dude loves music. Elliot's been growing on me more, and he was swell last night with Moody's Mood. Also like the guy who closed the show last night - Chris?- who has great stage presence and a solid rock voice. What can i say? I'm hooked on the show...

Bargains on Basie Mosaic, Black Saint/Soul Note and classical

Oh wow. I could go nuts on BS/SN at those prices. Anyone have any experience with them shipping to the states? I have a tough time finding BS/SN over here... -

And I wish that whatever it was that killed the dinosaurs would do the same to my neighbor with the very loud stereo and fondness for death metal... -
Her solo/combo work is fine, but her big band it where it's at. If you have a turntable, her LPs are fairly cheap, otherwise you can hunt down a few of her CDs that were released here. But you've got to hear her big band.

You'd be surprised (or maybe not!) with what actors - who are often paid millions of dollars by the way - try to get away with. One upcoming project that I'm involved with stars a young man who doesn't want to kiss the leading lady at the end - despite their growing romance over the course of the film - because his new girlfriend doesn't want him to.

Agree completely. In addition, I found Dalton extremely boring - not a good character trait for a 007.

World's Finest Car Destroyed in Crash
RDK replied to Randy Twizzle's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
No s@#t, Einstein. 240 kmh = 149 mph. What happened to the spirit of adventure here. Are we just a bunch of old farts? It has nothing to do with us being old farts. But driving 175 mph down PCH is stunningly unsafe. Would you be this glib about it if "Deitrich" (or worse, an innocent bystander) had gotten hurt/killed? Frankly, I'm shocked that anyone was able to walk away from that crash. My estimation of Ferrari engineering has gone way up. -
At least he admits to it...

Anyone hungry?

Typical lineup for the festival this year - i.e., some good, some not so much - but the last few years I've been more interested in Mark Cantor's jazz film showcase at LACMA on the Thursday night before.

Why do so many people hate Lonehill and other imports?
RDK replied to Jazztropic's topic in Re-issues
I'm curious. Would we have the same disdain for LoneHill if they did only release albums that weren't available any other way ("legally" or not) instead of the ones they obviously rip off? -

I wish i could find a pic of what they showed on the local news last night. It's worth a thousand words you know. And almost, in this case, as many giggles. A high speed race on PCH? It's a wonder that no one was killed. Now there's a Ferrari commecial for you. -

It's also built on oil fields and tar pits, so black goo oozing out of the ground really shouldn't be that big a deal... -
Don't necessarily agree re: Sean Astin. Yes, not much gravitas there, but he's meant to represent all the gov't wonks who've risen to power based on politics and connections instead of experience. Interesting, too, to see how Bill (the other head of CTU) has become more sympathetic and likeable now after coming across as such a prick last season. And as much as President Logan is such a spineless weasel, I can't help but feel some of his indecision is warranted. I mean, if I was in that position and had to choose between sacrificing 1000s of innocent civilians in the hopes of maybe stopping some terrorists who might try to target 10s of thousands more... well, i don't think that would be an easy decision to make. Still, his depiction is such that it doesn't inspire much hope and confidence in him or the office. So perhaps the show is more realistic than we might give it credit for. -_- Another thing I find fascinating about it is how absolutely Republican the show is in some of its sensibilities... and how it suckers us into accepting its point of view. I mean, I'm naturally against torture, tend to believe that it's not effective, and that the ends don't often justify the means. And yet every time Jack does it it's hard not to cheer and condone his actions, with the means absolutely justified by the results. So much for abstract concepts and concrete reality.

Yes, the strategic nature of the game/sport is remarkably compelling. That, and the sisters on the U.S. team are rather cute.

I never thought I'd say it, but snowboard cross is pretty damn cool!

Anyone with kids in the US, this is a must to look at.

For all the concern about some perv getting his head bashed in by a gang of drunken, internet-savvy fathers, has there ever been any account of this actually happening yet? At least in CA, such "sexual offenders" lists have been available for some time now, yet aside from alerting people to which neighbors might be hiding dark secrets I've heard of no actual confrontations due to the on-line posting. -
One can't blame emusic for this - it's likely a restriction placed on them by the label itself. Blame Tzadik.
