Jobim/Quincy Jones/Ray Brown - The Adventurers OST - Symbolic (stereo) Was there really a "Ray Brown Orchestra," or is this just Q using Ray Brown's name for contractual reasons? -
Here is another David Rose tune that never fails to put me in gay spirits, and a favorite of a particular jazz genius who may very well have been gay:

Talk about a totally irrelevant post! Sorry, but I LOVE David Rose and "Gay Spirits" is a prime example of the subgenre that I've dubbed Happy Housewife music. These are two minutes of pure bliss that never fail to put me in gay spirits.

Sounds nice! Musically and sonically! Not to shoot a hole in your theory, but I have recorded my combo in a similar setting except to digital, but still using top drawer mics, a natural room sound, no electronics, no overdubs, etc. The results are also very good. But yeah, analog is another link in the chain that adds to the sound.

You had me up until the fashion part.

CTI reissues: box-set, 1971 concert, single titles

Anyone pick up "A Wilder Alias" yet? That is an under-the-radar gem. -
Speaking of "Guess I'm Dumb," I've always wanted to attempt an expanded Pet Sounds lineup, adding GID, "Little Girl I Once Knew," and "Let Him Run Wild," and leaving out "Sloop John B." Those 3 tunes really fit into Pet Sounds, in terms of lyrics, production, and arrangements. I guess that "Let Him Run Wild" and "Little Girl" would have to go near the end of side 2, before "Caroline No." "Guess I'm Dumb" could probably work someplace on side 1.

Herbie - Maiden Voyage. I am moving this and "Empyrean Isles" from the jazz to the exotica section: Arthur Lyman - Legend of Plele. This was good until they got to "76 Trombones:" -
I never tire of the late 60s Jimmy Webb stuff.

You heard me. What I mean is it sounds like at some point in the chain, stereo signals were used (to transfer the mono) and they got out of phase. Not every track on my copy sounds this way, but some of them do, when you hit the mono button.

I have the 70s vinyl reissue of this. It was my first Herbie Nichols album. It's mono but it's out of phase. I wonder if it was mastered from vinyl and they didn't bother to do a mono transfer.

Do you have the 12" 78 album "Exotic Music" on Columbia? 4 tunes, 1 tune each side of two 12" 78s. He does "Lotus Land," "Flamingo," "Song of India" and "Poinciana." I am pretty sure that these are different arrangements/recordings than those that appeared on the early '50s Columbia LP "Lure of the Tropics," but I have never compared. Absolutely sublime. -

On a related note, I will sometimes walk into the record room on a Saturday or Sunday morning and see an album on the turntable and have no idea how it got there. -

I gave up beer drinking about 15 years ago in hopes of not getting fat. Looking at my avatar, you can see how that worked out. -
Piano Trio Format No Longer Does It For Me
Teasing the Korean replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I am admittedly more LP focused than I am CD focused, and even the CDs I tend to buy are things from the LP era. -
The last time I looked for LHR on youtube I couldn't find any. Thanks for this.

I must have zillions of piano trio albums. I have gotten to a point where this format, generally speaking, doesn't do it for me. I tend to like either solo piano, piano duos with bass or another instrument, or larger groups that include a piano trio as the rhythm section. The solo/duo albums allow for a certain amount of stretching out, introspection, and minimalism that I rarely encounter with trios. The larger groups allow for some changes in color and also include more interplay and a greater number of soloists. Now, on larger group albums, I will say that I LOVE the piano trio passages where the piano is soloing. It is nice change of texture and mood. But on the trio albums, I keep waiting for another voice to come in, and it doesn't happen. I even love the trio alums when you add a percussionist, like Erroll Garner and Red Garland sessions, and Herbie's "Inventions and Dimensions." The two pianists that I listen to the most, overall, are Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner. I have some Tyner trios that I haven't spun in ages. I don't think I have any Herbie Trios, unless "Speak Like a Child" and the aforementioned "Inventions" count. The piano trios that I come back to are by Randy Weston and, to a lesser degree, Ahmad Jamal. Bill Evans used to be a favorite of mine, and I have dozens of his albums from all periods, but in recent years, when I try to listen, these albums no longer speak to me as they once did. But I still listen to the duos with Jim Hall. Not sure what the point of my post is; I guess it's interesting that I play piano and worship all these pianists, but this classic setting holds little interest for me these days.

This recent discovery (for me) is one of those records that I don't know how I managed so long without it. It is perfect. It is the only music I want to hear right now. The bonus tracks from the later concert (included on the CD) completely work as an extension of the original record and don't feel like bonus tracks tacked on. I love this album.

What is it with the dumb-ass weathermen who have to do live coverage outside?

Last weekend, I accidentally opened up a top shelf bottle of wine and didn't even know it until I saw the empty bottle the next day. In fairness to me, the top shelf variety of this vineyard uses a label almost indistinguishable from that of their standard variety. This incident underscores the dangers of drinking while drunk. I will never make that mistake again.
