  1. I saw about an hour's worth of this (how long was it?). Very good show, but it's always so frustrating to see clips of songs instead of the whole thing. Interesting to see John Williams at the piano - I didn't think he touched one since "Dreamsville."
  2. "Elevator music" is a compliment.
  3. It doesn't get any better than this. _____ alone is worth the price of the admission.
  4. Welcome Evan! Thanks for the profile pic!
  5. That's the REAL cover. The other one with a photo of a guy with a trumpet is a jive-ass second-rate replacement.
  6. BM, when are you going to put a picture of Joan from "Madmen" for your signature image? I've been waiting patiently.
  7. This 1985 recording has been resurrected: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...oryId=100436121
  8. Robert Cobert - Dark Shadows OST Vol. 2 - MPS
  9. Julie London - Julie at Home - Liberty (stereo, side logo) Allegedly recorded in her living room. It's a small group, so that's possible.
  10. "Several Shades of Jade" and "Breeze from the East" are LIGHT YEARS apart from each other, and you may need to clean the wax out of your ears if they are the same album to you. SSOJ features arrangements by THEE GREAT LALO SCHIFRIN and is easily one of the ten best albums CT ever did. BBTE, on the other hand, is a lightweight pop affair with substandard arrangements, although it does have a nice version of "Black Orchid."
  11. I generally agree with you. I have all the expanded and unreleased stuff from those two albums on a Columbia collection called "Nostalgia in Times Square." I certainly like having and hearing the full length stuff. The thing is, though, that Mingus went into those sessions knowing that he would record more than he would use. The original albums reflected his conception of how they should sound. The expanded "Mingus Ah Um," which I also have, simply doesn't have the same pacing as the original. I'm glad the full length performances are out there, but I feel they should supplement Mingus's original albums rather than replace them, IMHO.
  12. Thanks. So it looks like I will need to hang on to my 80s pressings of the CDs - and mono LPs.
  13. Does that Legacy edition listed in the first post include the tracks as Mingus originally edited them, or are they the full-length versions?
  14. Previewing all volumes. I will post my thoughts on the best ones and edit this thread: Afro Rock Impact and Action Flute for Moderns Flamboyant Themes Vol 4 (includes "Powerhouse Pop" and "Zodiac" later issued on the Sound Gallery) Big Beat Vol. 1 Chorus and Orchestra (includes "Man Friday" and "Walrus and the Carpenter" on the Sound Gallery) Progressive Pop
  15. Moacir Santos - Carnival of the Spirits - Blue Note Funky 70s Brazilian decadence.
  16. Lalo Schifrin - Lalo=Brilliance - EMI/Columbia (mono) UK issue of Roulette session, no idea if it's a dedicated mono mix or a fold-down.
  17. The music was tailor-made for different applications. The same top-shelf composer/arranger may have contributed either "great" or "awful" music to the library. It was work made for hire, and it was as good as what was being requested of them. The albums, both the originals and reissues, are organized according to mood and genre, so it's generally easy to get the good stuff and avoid the bad stuff.
  18. Based on my initial quick perusals, I would say Afro Rock so far. Apparently, there are no plans for further LPs or CDs at this time, so downloading is the only way to go.
  19. I actually like that album. It reminds me of something that a couple who met on The Dating Game would listen to over fondue following their six-night stay in romantic Puerto Rico! This album would have worked with either a different arranger or a different pianist.
  20. KPM is a British music library. The 1000 series consists largely of late 60s/early 70s funky/groovy/decadent/now sound stuff.
  21. Chewy, "Surfin'" was on Candix.
  22. The Junior Mance Touch may have been a great album if the bass player had bothered to tune prior to rolling tape. That rendered it unlistenable for me. Where was the producer?
  23. The Afro Rock album is amazing!
