  1. This was clarified some years ago. He overdubbed drum parts for the US releases of the early Tony Sheridan-era stuff, when Pete Best was the drummer. These tracks came out on the Atco and MGM labels in 1964 during the mad rush to cash in on the Beatles name. All of the variations of these tracks are apparently available on a Bear Family issue. You'd have to be a major completist to want this stuff, though. It's pretty bad.
  2. Please, please, try to pick up any of the three albums I mentioned. They are absolute gems, especially Village Green. Promise, but I'll look for vinyls Then add "The Kink Kronikles" to that list. It's a double that contains many essential singles, B sides, and oddball tracks from that era.

  4. Agree 100%. The CD has some great bonus tracks left off the original, to boot!
  5. Whenever a drummer rolls his eyes at the mention of Ringo, I say, "Play 'She Said She Said' like Ringo does and you're hired." It usually shuts them up. You really have to hear the Beatles stuff in mono. The drums are generally more prominant in the mix on the mono versions.
  6. They were a boring rock band by then, IMHO. Don't let this discourage you from picking up the good stuff.
  7. I was being ironic. Dude! Take it easy. I try to avoid youtube because I got trapped in the labyrinth...and from Crosby I can surf all the sixties...and suddenly it's four a.m. and I am drunk. No good for my health and my working day. I've been there. Try watching this stuff at work while your on the clock, so you can get a good night's sleep.
  8. You only need three albums: Face to Face, Something Else, and The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society. While I generally go for vinyl, I would seek out CD releases of these that contain bonus tracks. (Ray was VERY prolific for a while there).
  9. When I saw the thread title, I would have thought it was started by Chewy.
  10. I tend to agree with Dave (initial post) that roughly after Tommy, the Who start to become just another boring 70s rock band. I generally like most of the early stuff. While I spun it to death in my teens and maybe the first two or three weeks of my twenties, I have to be in the right mood now. I do think, though, that the band in general and Townshend as a songwriter tend to be overrated, maybe not as much so now as, say, twenty years ago. And, I think the Small Faces and the Kinks TOTALLY blow them away.
  11. Ramsey Lewis - The Sounds of Christmas - Cadet mono I'm spinning what was previously Goosby Jones' copy of the record...
  12. I, too, was too young, but thanks to the magic of video and audio recording, we can all enjoy the travesty together: http://youtube.com/watch?v=3wuy5oyemE0
  13. Funniest album title ever, considering the artist. For sure underrated at times, and probably the best of the so called "west coast" sound in retrospect IMHO. Now spinnin CSNY FOUR WAY STREET Japan Atlantic pressing. DC definitely has his moments, but he was also inconsistent, as his version of "Hey Joe" at Monterey attests.
  14. Christmas with the Chipmunks, Vol. 2 - Liberty mono Audiophile 45 rpm reissue, mastered by Steve Hoffman. Surprisingly beatnik version of "Night Before Xmas."
  15. The Jack Jones Christmas Album - Kapp (mono). Original New York deep groove pressing.
  16. Decorating the Xmas tree. So, I'm BLASTING.... "IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!" - Andy Williams. Call me a square.
  17. Funniest album title ever, considering the artist.
  18. Jobim - Gabriela OST - RCA Brazil
  19. I'm in Branson, MO for the weekend. Gonna check out John Coltrane.
  20. You need to give this one a second chance. It's considered one of his best.
  21. We need a "nerd" icon where the smiley face has glasses.
  22. Call me a square: Steve & Eydie, Bonfa & Brazil - Columbia mono. Arrangements by Deodato. Overall, better than I would have expected.
  23. Ski Trails - Jo Stafford (w/Paul Weston) - Columbia six-eye mono. Terrific winter themed (as opposed to Xmas) album. Love her version of "Moonlight in Vermont."
  24. Today's (Thanksgiving) Democracy Now is about lyricist Yip Harburg. Amy Goodman interviews his son. http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/11/22/1448225
