  1. I just watched "Blonde" last night (I try to see all the Oscar-nominated performances) and really hated it. Ana de Armas was fine, but she was undone by a lousy one-note screenplay that had nothing but Monroe as victim. She *was* victimized, but she also formed her own production company, negotiated a tough deal with another studio and won several awards for her acting. The "scene" with JFK was particularly nasty. Hated the movie. Hated it.

  2. Thanks for the heads up on this one, Larry. I'd collected the first five volumes years ago and listened now and then. I confess I didn't know they'd continued to more volumes. I wonder whether the fact that Yale controls this material is a factor in the Goodman Estate's being so unwilling to let other stuff be reissued? I'm thinking here of the sizable trove of Savory material that they wouldn't let Mosaic issue?

Prestige-era Jackie on this one. Weinstock (if it was actually his choosing) seemed to like to pair Ammons with McLean.

    Tangential history lesson time:

WD-40 was invented in 1953. The letters stand for "Water Displacement." The number stands for how many times chemists experimented with certain compounds before landing on a recipe that achieved anti-rust qualities. The lubricant and anti-squeak properties were pleasant side effects.

Why didn't Art Taylor's loved-ones tell him about his bass drum pedal? Was Arthur too sensitive to receive constructive criticism? If only he'd been gifted a spraycan of the 3 year-old wonder product—so many "hi fi jam sessions" would have benefited. Surely Bob Weinstock, an aerospace enthusiast in his teen years, kept a can in his desk.

The things I learn from this Board!

  4. Mine finally arrived today. Looks fine (except that, bizarrely, the cover insert on the first set of cds was upside down!). With the exception of the three Opera House cds and part of the Hollywood Bowl concert, all previously issued, this will be new music for me, so I'm looking forward to exploring it.

Memory fails (it often does), but didn't we hear somewhere that Mosaic was going to issue all those 1957 Newport records in a set? Or was that just one of those ideas on the "they ought to do this" thread?

    oh, "April in Paris" 😀

    You are lucky !

There must be something about Paris in the month of April. And that ballad expresses the feelings so well. And related to music and live in general. Sorry to say not have been in Paris yet, but my two hometowns are also fancy towns and there is something in the air in that month that´s very special. You have musical inspirations, And it was April when I had my first date with the girl I married....and the atmosphere had something very similar to "April in Paris" , those wonderful smelling blossoms in the old city park, a gentle glimpse of a spring rain, and the most beautiful girl in town with me....

That's a lovely memory! I was there once in April. I'd just had a lovely dinner and gotten a fresh street nutella crepe (it's a weakness, what can I say?). I walked on to the beautiful Pont des Arts in a gentle rain and stood at the rail. There was no one else there, and it was as if I had the city all to myself. The tower was sparkling in the distance, the Louvre to one side, the Institut on the other.  If I didn't already love Paris, then at that moment, I would have fallen in love with it all over again.

I would contact them and be certain they aren't expecting you to re-order because of the credit card hold issue they had.

Thanks Lon. I had gotten caught up in the whole credit card hold issue and had reordered right away, but I took your advice and wrote them. I got a short note from Fred that it would be shipped "in a couple of days." Then I got a shipping notice the next day. Soooo, I should see the set before long. This rollout definitely has been a bit messier than usual.
