"Murder in Provence" on Britbox. Only three episodes, but I liked 'em. Hope there's another season.

The Japanese reissued some Crown things. I have a cd of "The New Swingin' Herman Herd" by Woody Herman that I got in Japan a few years back. It was recorded in Chicago in March of 1960. I like the record.

Wild Bill was especially wonderful with Hodges on "Blues for New Orleans" from Ellington's great New Orleans Suite. I love all their collaborations.

Sorry to read today that Oscar-winning actor William Hurt died at age 71. He was always interesting to watch and gave some great performances. RIP.

Was that Barbara Bosson, then wife of show creator Steven Bochco? No chance she was getting written off the show.
Yep, that was the case. But I'm with Ken on that character.

The renewal of this thread caused me to get out that Felsted box and listen to it. Lovely version of "My One and Only Love" by Hawk on disc 5. Thanks for the reminder!

Earl Hines & Jimmy Rushing "Blues & Things" Master Jazz/New World cd
WOW. I forgot how great this disc is. Five masters who know what to do, and boy do they get it done. And the producer and engineer are right there with them, capturing all the nuances and presenting them to you gently, as if you were sitting fifteen feet away in awe.
Such a relaxed swing and careful yet happy delivery.
WOW.
It's hard to go wrong with Mr. Five by Five!

I haven't no. Drinking, smoking, and drugs are all just things I used to do, and when I quit something, be it person, place, or thing, I just totally quit. Done with it.
Trying to do the same thing with sweets right now, but...might be my downfall, that one. We'll see. Just turned 66, so it's not like it's gone too far. But there ain't much time left before it will be.
Word.

His Armstrong biography IIRC was decent. His Ellington biography was an eccentric wart-hunting disgrace IMO. Ellington, per Teachout, should have had academic classical training.
I agree. If anything, Ellington's piano style was one of his more original contributions. Monk certainly paid attention to him. The Armstrong bio was good. RIP.

Sounds very good Chewy. Those Edison records often had excellent sound. Red Nichols recorded for Edison. I assume you have most of those?

Don't recall reading Sparke's book, though I did glance at it. I posted this back in 2019:
Glancing through Michael Sparke's "Stan Kenton, This Is an Orchestra!" (U. of North Texas Press), I noticed FWIW that the a Hollywood Bowl Concert concert (6/12/48), with the Kenton orchestra as the sole attraction, drew 15,000 and grossed $26,000 -- roughly $280,000 in today's dollars. Further, if those sums suggest that tickets for that concert were less than $2 each, tickets for a Hollywood Bowl concert in 2019, depending on the act, can range from $20 to $160 each. Thus the dollar equivalent in 2019 to the Kenton take in 1948 might need to be adjust upwards significantly.
Just saw this (traveling for the holidays). I'll be interested in your take on the La Barbera book.

No sooner saw the email on my phone than I opened up my laptop and preordered. This one looks *really* interesting! Nice that they're offering a discount for early orders. I don't think they've done that before, have they?
