Thanks for the heads up, Scott! Must try Anderson's when next in Red Stick. By the way, the BR R & K is the only one I've visited. It must have been fantastic in the old days, as I loved it when I was there - presumably after the Picadilly Circus buyout. On a serious note, I wonder how New Orleans is now, after hurricane Ivan. I know that the storm went somewhat East of there, but it still didn't look good for N.O. Being below sea level is not exactly good.

Truly a superb album. What's the sound like on the CD, and did they use the original Parrot LP cover that Mike Weil posted (do a search) or the Argo one with the old car? I'm asking because I have a reasonable LP. That raises another question - does the CD sound as if it was taken from vinyl? I can't find it on either the Verve or Amazon websites.

For me, it's Milt without any hesitation. I love pretty well all of the well-known players on the instrument, but Milt is just so satisfying deep down. I think he was the best ever, with very stiff competition. I saw a video of him (in Germany, I think), recorded just before he died. Mickey Roker was on drums. Milt still sounded as good as ever. They played S.K.J., which is a favorite. I think he was very versatile, to be able to play convincingly in the somewhat artsy-fartsy MJQ (don't get me wrong, I like the MJQ) and also straight-ahead blowing groups.

Greetings to Barak, Bentsy and all other Jewish friends! It's the Feast of Trumpets today (Leviticus 23:23-25). (Strictly speaking, yesterday at sundown.) Coming up soon, we have the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 23:26-32) and then the Feast of Tabernacles (Leviticus 23:33-36). All blessings to you.

A few of the Capitol things are currently available, http://www.bluenote.com/artistpage.asp?ArtistID=3270 but many more aren't. They're a mixed bag, to put it mildly, but there's some really good stuff there. Hopefully the reissues will continue. Could you post what you think is good from the post-Riverside era please, Jim? For some reason, I have not heard much of it. Sadly, the Capitols are at the mercy of Ron McMaster. D'Oh! One that I did get on LP was "Domination", with a big band arranged by Oliver Nelson. Although one might argue that it's a bit "commercial", I really like it. There's a very nice bit with a clarinet choir behind the alto. The AMG guide's brief review is unkind to the album and I wonder if the reviewer ever actually heard the LP. That "Know What I Mean" album, with Bill Evans, is superb. A favorite of mine. [Funnily enough, I think the title tune never achieved its aim. That usually happens when you try to force something to happen. It's a bit like the 40s cartoon studio boss who told the staff to make another Bugs Bunny.]

The most disgusting thing you've ever eaten
Shrdlu replied to neveronfriday's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, the British have a chain of freeway restaurants called "Little Chef" - often the only place to eat in their immediate location. Disgusting food, but at least they are expensive. My second worst is also British: London street food. My parents gave me some when I was 7 and I threw up. Years later, in about 1974, it happened again. I lost a whole day of vacation because of it. "There is death in the pot." -
What a superb alto! (And that in an era of a lot of mediocre ones.) I have enjoyed many hours listening to him. The only horn in tune on "Fran Dance"! I am alone in thinking that his post-Riverside albums are a tad hard to get at the moment? I never did get to hear much of his work after that period, and would like to now.

They got some of that from England's Tony Williams - the guy who runs Spotlite records, which was the first label to put out all the Parker Dial stuff. (Some of the Chaloff selections were Dial rcordings.)

Speaking of CDs taken from vinyl, a newly released Japanese CD of Gary McFarland's "Today" album has just arrived. Turns out that it's taken from an LP, and it wasn't exactly VG+. D'Oh! And I didn't bid on an LP on eBay that was billed as near mint. Oh well, it's the first Japanese CD that disappointed some. (Actually, the transfer from LP to CD is done superbly. Too superbly, perhaps.)

Some very good comments. I agree. I posted this link in a casual way, in case the collection had the odd thing that someone has had a hard time finding. It sounded as if the LPs have been reasonably well looked after.

Danke, Claude und Jim. Ich habe schon AdAware und SpyBot! [scheiß ist das richtige Wort, Catesta!]

But still worth a look, for some people. There might be the odd thing that they want. If I had the dinero, I would get the Hodges, and I would also like the two Solid State "Jazz For A Sunny Afternoon" (sic) LPs.

We have been one of many who have had an unwanted "guest" on our computer. It is from "iwantsearch.com" and it installs itself on the PC and gives you an unwanted taskbar near the top of all windows, including Internet Explorer. It also sets up their website as your browser's home page, and re-sets it every time you change it back to the one that you really want. An annoying, rotten thing, that robbed us of several hours. Anyway, removal is simple. Here's what did it for us: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uninstall Instructions: To uninstall newest version of IWantSearch plugin please go to START -> Settings -> Control Panel -> ADD/Remove Programs and Uninstall "SBSoft" To uninstall the older version of IwantSearchPlugin please click on the following link http://www.iwantsearch.com/uninstall/remove.exe --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Happy uninstalling! By opening this thread, you just gave me all your password details!

Just saw this collection of great LPs on eBay, so I thought you might appreciate a heads-up: Seller's items I am not related to the seller. Lots of Hodges Verves, for example.

What a charmless Christian you are. Guess that's why you referred to them as "camel jockies"-they're non-Christians, they're condemned to hell, who gives a shit, right? And exactly how do you know that Islam is a crock? HOW do you KNOW they aren't enjoying their 72 virgins at this very moment???? Oh, that's right, the King James Bible tells you so. You do more to keep people away from YOUR so-called "saviour" than you've ever done to bring them to "Him", preacher man. I object to that, Dan. (And, sorry if there was any misunderstanding.) I am an evangelist, and I wish to see everyone trust Jesus as Saviour, as he is the only way to heaven (John 14:6). I regularly witness to people of all colors, races and ethnic groups. I do care whether people get saved. If I were in Iraq now, I would witness to anyone that I could. I don't speak Arabic, so I would need an interpreter. I do not use the term "Christian", as it is now meaningless. Don't be so touchy about light-hearted names. People seem to be searching for things that might offend them these days. Expressions like "Yank", "Pommies", "Limeys" etc. are very common, and, to me at least, harmless. If you are in the Mideast desert, you go around on a camel. Where I live, I use a car. You can call me a "car jockey" if you like. Man, a person can hardly speak anymore without a ton of bricks falling on their head. Re "charm", there is a saying that the truth sometimes offends. But Paul says "Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?" (Galatians 4:16) Would you prefer that I lie to you and tell you that Mohammed Atta and his buddies are now being rewarded by God for killing thousands of people. Chris speaks of logic. It is illogical to try to maintain simultaneously that 9/11 was an atrocity and that Islam's teachings are O.K.

I did not say that God wished the regular passengers and staff on those planes, and the people on the ground who were killed, to be destroyed. I was referring to the horrible terrorists who perpetrated the evil deeds, as should have been obvious. But, no-one who isn't saved is "innocent" in God's sight, Chris. There is no lack of logic. God says "There is none righteous, no, not one." (Romans 3:10) He also says "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." (John 3:36) These did not originate with me, so don't act as if this information is being published for the first time. This is believed by all saved people. With those scriptures in mind, the conclusions that I made follow directly. Anyone who was killed that day went to heaven if they were already saved, looking at the positive side of it. Obviously, the unsaved terrorists didn't. I derive no pleasure from that tragic fact, and, more importantly, nor does God. God says "I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live." (Ezekiel 33:11) I am a preacher of the gospel, and my job is to publish the truth. There is no intention to offend. Those who oppose the gospel are very vocal about it, so I also have the right to broadcast the scriptures.

Hmmm... I wouldn't want to imply that those who perished in the two planes that hit the WTC were "wimps" because they didn't physically challenge the hijackers. Until that day, the traditional wisdom was that you DON'T physically challenge hijackers while a loaded plane is in the air. The only way that fighting back makes sense in that situation (due to the fact that you really don't know if the hijackers have guns, or bombs, and thus could be jeopardizing everyone on the plane) is if you KNOW they're planning to intentionally crash the plane (or kill everyone on board, one way or another). Nobody on those two planes could have known for sure that they were going to crash intentionally. The other situation was different. Due to the time delay, the people on the plane that went down in Pennsylvania had gotten the news of the WTC crashes by phone, and knew they would probably be SAVING lives by taking the risk. I hope this makes sense... my memory could be foggy after three years... You have a point, Jim (and ejp626). I think your recollections are correct. How could the passengers and staff on board have known what those awful people were going to do? Anyway, we now know that conventional wisdom is not always right. It is unlikely that any terrorist will be able to get away with the 9/11 thing again - for one thing, the pilots would be sure to crash the plane in a relatively safe place as a last resort. I don't think they will do such a thing again. It only has to be done once, and then they leave a legacy of fear in the aftermath, forcing everyone to suffer the inconvenience and expense of tedious security measures. It is satisfying to know that God will get the culprits, and has already gotten the ones who died in the crashes. Now they know that Islam is a crock.

To anyone who hasn't heard it, Tina Brooks's album "Back To The Tracks" is superb, and this TOCJ sounds great. Highly recommended!

Good point, BW. All that money wasted on the unnecessary Iraq war could have been used for after-hurricane repairs, both at home and in other countries. Actually, the UN guy said that aid money tends to go to war zones, rather than to places hit by natural disasters, even though the natural disasters do much more harm. -
It's so frustrating, too, as it doesn't feel like the people who did it will ever be punished here on earth (apart from the ones on the airplanes, of course). What's also so frustrating is the ease with which the culprits did it. They were only armed with box cutters. Even allowing for the fact that this was so unexpected, people are so wimpy and easily intimidated. Two of my kids are high up in Ju Jitsu, and could easily have disarmed the scumbags with the box cutters. At least the passengers on the plane that went down in Pennsylvania fought back.

One thing you could do, Tony, is to feed the RVGs in analog mode into your computer using Musicmatch, if this is possible with an iPod (I have no idea what that is). On my PC (non Apple) I downloaded a different cdfs.vxd file and that overcame the block that protected CDs have - I did this not to do burns, but so that my daughter could play her CDs on the computer while she is in talk rooms online. I will not purchase any protected CDs after the reports that I have heard.

What an awful mess Ivan made of Grenada! Everyone in its path, or wake needs our prayers. I just saw some U.N. dude being interviewed about the possibility of sending help to Grenada. He hemmed and hawed about it. It would be great if that body did some good for once. They have mucho dinero. -
Other famous quotes: "Look at the damn fool making a wheel, he could have spent that time carrying food." "What a waste of time looking through that telescope, everyone knows the world is flat." "Look at those guys wasting time studying mold, what a waste of money!" Oh, come off it! What a shallow response. It totally misses the point.

It's probably all the Trabant fumes! (The U.K has an equivalent, the Ford.) -
Another appalling waste of millions that could have been spent on something useful, such as food or hospitals. Capsule schmapsule. We don't need to know about that stuff anyway. Some nut was saying the other day that we should park a DNA bank on the Moon in case the Earth is entirely wiped out in a nuclear war. No, really, someone actually said that, apparently. I won't insult your intelligence by listing the obvious objections that could be made.
