Tim Hagans's Animation does Bitches Brew, live

I also hope they keep it somewhat "down and dirty". It'd be a shame if it is too slick. Will Teo be playing saxophone? Guy -
Bill Simmons on the abysmal eastern conference (I feel like Chris Albertson) If nothing else comes out of the NBA this season, at least the Knicks suck again! Guy

No central heating? Aric moved to "northern north America" a while back -- it might be even colder than 30 degrees outside. Guy -

Cool, I will PM you next week. Anyone else? Skeith, catesta, 7/4, maren, PhillyQ? Guy -
I'm tempted to go. For those more familiar with these musicians -- is this going to be good? If so, would NY-area board members be interested in meeting up for this?

He's very good, but I've always thought his poor shooting percentage was a mark against him. Guy

First the Jazz, now the Spurs. Almost time for the meltdown. 6 blocks for Biedrins, including 3 in a row on Duncan. Guy

I think I heard a track from this album on the radio today. The playing was great but the vocals just wouldn't stop! Guy

Music in the Herbie Hancock "Headhunter's" vein
Guy Berger replied to michel1969's topic in Recommendations
Seriously, there's quite a bit of discussion about this very topic on the thread (link) I've quoted here, and posted above. The two Eddie Henderson leader dates on Capricorn (compiled together on one CD) are my favorite of this kind of music, even above Herbie's own material. See the thread above for a more detailed discussion. Cheers!! I haven't heard the Hendersons, but from descriptions it seems they sound more like Herbie's pre-Headhunters material. Hence, I am not sure they are a good recommendation. Weather Report from 1973 to 1976 might fit the bill. They definitely do the improvisation-over-funky-grooves thing. What about the Crusaders' early 70s music? I haven't heard a lot of it. Guy -
Nobody especially interesting, except that so far I've outlived the Big Bopper by 37 days. Guy

I think Herbie's Thrust is better than Headhunters, but in a similar style. Guy -
I do. Guy

These guys are mentioned in Stuart Nicholson's Jazz Rock book. I haven't heard them. Frankly, the description makes them seem like a 2nd tier 80s Weather Report. (i.e., Not promising.) Is any of their stuff worth checking out? Guy

ELP covers (rips off) Big John Patton?
Guy Berger replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous Music
TARKUS ! Wasn't that the one with the Armadillo on the cover with tank tracks? Regularly cited as one of the worst albums ever. I'm sure albums like this spurred on the advancement of punk rock no end. Yeah, that cover is hilarious. As far as the album -- the suite is actually damn good, especially the instrumental bits. Give it another listen. Side 2, on the other hand, is quite bad. As far as ELP being pretentious -- yeah, I guess. But I've never been bothered very much by that label. Their sin was making lots of music that hasn't held up, not taking themselves too seriously. (And I have to imagine that any band making music so over-the-top did it tongue-in-cheek at least some of the time.) My favorite ELP album is the first one -- "The Three Fates" (!!!), "The Knife Edge" (or whatever the Janacek-derived piece is called), "Take a Pebble", "The Barbarian". Nice stuff. Guy -

Maybe she checks in once a day or once a week or once a month and reads through various threads. Maybe she has nothing to contribute to the music threads because there is so much knowledge here already. Maybe she prefers to lurk (like a lot of people do here). And when she finds something to comment on, she does. How would you know? In any case, isn't that the whole point of a forum? Does one have to chime in on every thread to be taken seriously or deserve to post in certain threads? I still don't see why it matters. Amen. Though it was kind of weird when she played the race card against Dan. Guy -
I just got back from the Warriors-Jazz game. The Warriors kicked their butts (and in less than 100 pts)! Utah looked awful -- Kirilenko, Okur, and Boozer all had miserable games. Still, it's easy to see why they are so dominant -- they definitely have the sizeable, talented frontline. Nice to see the W's snap their winning streak, even if it will resume on Monday against the Spurs. When is Baron coming back? Who knows. Guy

Oh, he was doing some Blindfold Test thing and they played him a cut off that album and he went batshit, talking about how "they shit on Ellington! They shit on Duke!" or some looney-tooney crap like that. Same as his infamous comments about Braxton in a similar context many years earlier, only his sense of "outrage" was even more f-ed up because he'd had more than enough time to figure stuff out and obviously hadn't. God, what an idiot. Doesn't look like I'll be checking out his music any time soon. Guy

I saw this last night. It was a very good movie and definitely exceeded my expectations! Guy
