Haitink's Shostakovish is a little bit to 'cosey' indeed, especially if you compare his interpretations with the over-emotional Russian interpretations.
The eight symphony is about 'metamorphose' so about ... surviving and celebrating ... post-war emotions. Haitink hits IT ... very well.
