  1. And Chuck gets a "thank-you" in the notes.
  2. Jelly Roll Morton: Mamie's Blues.
  3. I'm more interested in the pre-65 stuff controlled by the first wife. I wonder what is its status.
  4. I no longer have my SACD set -up (had to get new amp for HDTV) but my memory is that they'd changed the placement of the bass on the SACD. Not that the original was necessarily more "correct"-- just what i was used to hearing for more than 30 years.
  5. Yes there version of the 2nd Mili film is almost unedited footage. There is an official release with some other interesting stuff on it IIRC.
  6. It's available on an amazing 2 DVD set that also includes Jammin' the Blues, the Dizzy/Bird tv appearance, the 2nd Norman Granz film "Improvisation" with Bird, Bean and Prez and The Sound of Jazz. It's rightfuly called " The Greatets Jazz Films Ever." However it is possible that the Sony release will look better. They may have access to the original materials since the show was not shown live. That would suggest that CBS would have made sure that they had good film materials for later broadcast. I believe that The Sound of Jazz was broadcast live and the best extant prints are Kines. Unfortunately that may also be true of The Sound of Miles Davis-- I'm not sure what the technology was for recording multiple camera tv shows at the time. I believe it was before video tape was commonly used .
  7. Let's see: how many iterations of KOB have I owned: 1) Lp 2) Original cd. 3) Gold Disc (still the best sounding) 4) SACD 5)Miles/Trane box 6) Duo disc with DVD included. I still own the last 4. And since I also have cds of the 2 European concerts and Ashley what's-his-name's book, I think I'll pass on the new one.
  8. And what's all this cost?
  9. The new Uptown Dizzy at the Spotlite cd booklet contains several photos from the film "Jivin' in Bebop". I'e seen segments of it but never the whole film. I notice that it's available from . Is it worth getting?
  10. What was the 3rd Lp not included?
  11. Now there's a blast from the past. I used to have the score from Lilith on Lp. IIRC Phil and Quill played on it. Was it on Verve?
  12. I didn't know this existed. Was it released in France?
  13. Congratulations!! BTW where'd you find it?
  14. And many more!!!
  15. Played it in my car on the way into LA today. Surprised (pleasantly) by the non-greazy slower numbers. Whole cd made the trip very enjoyable.
  16. Many years ago when I decided not to ship my 400 or so Lps from Toronto to LA I had John Norris of Coda Magazinze and Sackville Records auction them off through his mailing list. Even after John took a 40% commission, IIRC I got a couple of thousand dollars which was certainly more than I paid for the records. John gave the unsold ones to a University library. My name was on most of the jackets and every so often I'd hear from people who had either bought an Lp or seen one at the library. Aren't there still a couple of of places that hold auctions of Jazz recordings? Not on e-bay but from their own sites?
  17. It has arrived!! BTW what y were you song of the day?
  18. I got a gentle rocking but you could tell it was a quake. But I'm a long way away.
  19. When there's a Republican administration oil prices tend to go down as elections approach.
  20. I know him mostly for his work with Gil Evans though I once saw him leading his own group in LA. He always seemed so young and full of life. The last note on his blog is quite remarkable: he's more concerned about the other people in his ward -- including the staff-- than he is about himself.
  21. When it comes to Monk tunes, I assume the composer's changes as the correct ones, period, no questions asked. This is still not a "universal" practice by any means, but it is becoming more of one. Having said that, though, the Miles bridge is still more commonly played in these parts than is the Monk, unlike Miles' "cheating" bridge to "Well, You Needn't". Sort of like Miles' bridge (or lack thereof) to When Lights are Low.
  22. Just ordered them from CD Universe (cheaper than Amazon in this case even adding shipping). Of course I used the "Search Music" button at the top of this page.
  23. Just as I read this I was listening to Dizzy Gillespie talking about his version of Round Midnight on Piano Jazz!
