  8. In my experience, classical music "buffs" are easily the most smug and condescending of all music fans.

  12. I heard the second set, which was quite good; just what I needed. He played tenor, alto and EWI, backed by piano/bass/drums, all unfamiliar to me. (The pianist's first name was Caleb; I don't recall the last/the others). I even like his EWI playing; he takes it seriously, not as a novelty instrument. He seems like a super-nice fellow, also. I hope they have him back, as the venue is really pleasant, with good sound; their usual acts are too much on the pop side for me to go very often.
  13. Last night, Quamon Fowler, Kitchen Cafe, Dallas
  14. Dizzy Gillespie, Dizzy's Big 4
  15. Another fine recent release on Stut: Of Abstract Dreams, previously unreleased studio session from circa 1974-75, with a small group (seven piece band). Ra plays only acoustic piano, with some killer John Gilmore solos. https://www.amazon.com/Abstract-Dreams-Sun-Ra/dp/B077Z81HQV/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1532314296&sr=1-1&keywords=Sun+ra+of+abstract+dreams&dpID=6120snalT0L&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

  20. To my dismay, the internet informs that in 2008, a few years before I learned about this artist, Mahmoud Ahmed actually played a concert in Dallas (which has a significant population of Ethiopians) and just a couple of miles from where I live. Ignorance is not bliss.
  21. Previously available as a DVD, Charles Mingus Live at Montreux 1975 has been recently released as a 2CD set. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077TRFQJK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  22. Right; 6 records for $400, I don't think so.
  23. My iPhone weather app currently predicts 109 degrees F for Friday.
  24. Now being issued on CD. https://benallison.com/store/preorder
  25. From what I have read, the only musicians being paid more than a pittance from streaming are major pop artists.
