  3. Happy birthday!
  4. I stop at Half Priced Books a couple of times a week, and Josey Records once a week usually; I only listen to LPs on the weekend (CDs during the week); this often results in finding more interesting LPs in a given week than I have time to listen to; couple that with persistence over a long period of time and it leads to a substantial backlog.
  5. Morgenland All Star Band, Dastan (Dreyer Gaido)
  6. I've gone the last four years and have only had good experiences, other than some rather cold weather and some snow. So far I've been lucky in terms of snow not affecting any flights. I haven't had any problems accessing venues, but I think some of the smaller venues (like the Zinc Bar) do get full. My approach is to mostly stick to the larger venues and not move around a lot. Some take the opposite approach of going from venue to venue after each set. The largest number of venues the past three years has been at the New School, so I've mostly been in that vicinity. The venues tend to be in clusters, some in short walking distance, others a bit further. Nublu (in the West Village) was the furthest from the action. One difference from Big Ears is they don't turn the audience after every show, so you can find a good seat and have a sequence of concerts in one venue if you like. Also, the ticket prices for the Marathon are quite reasonable. Soundwise, it has been pretty consistently good.

  22. I wanted to see the venue (newest in the Arts District), and it is beautiful, perfect for acoustic jazz. The set was not great or anything, but it was modestly enjoyable, particularly the quieter pieces where he played soprano. I quite like his bassist Eric Revis. The amusing point was when he announced he was playing an Andrew Hill song, and like two people cheered. So probably not too many Andrew Hill records in the audience's collections. Basically, I'm not feeling an irresistible urge to order Branford CD's today, but I probably would go see him again in the right circumstance.
  23. Last night, Branford Marsalis Quartet at Moody Performance Hall in the Dallas Arts District.
  24. I really liked one song; the rest was sort of okay.
