Zorn's Spillane is essential, not for John Patton, but rather for the long piece featuring Albert Collins.

Did your Dad make any other small group recordings? Hi just thought I would tell you that my dad trombone player Herb Wise was the lead player on Debut in Blues with Gene Shaw. Herb is 77, still kickn and looking great. I also thought you would like a MYSTERY list of musicians on a great album that Roulette decided to omit the musician list in favor of Sarah Vaughn and Lalo Schfrin. The album is SWEET AND SASSY: The list is as follows Trumpets: John Howell, George Bean, Warren Kime. Trombones: Herb Wise, Paul Crumbaugh, Bill Corte. Reeds: Kenny Soderblom, Mike Simpson, Art Laurer, Andy Moss. Piano: Ken Harrity. Drums: Bob Cousins. Base : Mel Davis. This was a 12 tune 4 hour session and truly Sarah Vaughn's best work bar none. This was balls to the wall , hair blowing work of genius..... Gotta have it and crank it up. Cindy VH. Ps. It was recorded in Chicago and used the Chicago Symphony strings..... Thank you for reading.

So far Reelin' In the Years has only released films from European television, so perhaps not.

I saw him live several times with Dizzy Gillespie in Dizzy's later years--he was usually the highlight of the concerts. One time I caught him with his trio at Sweet Basil--also a pleasing experience. -
I was thinking the same thing when I ordered today. I'm sure that next week someone will post something on the Listening thread or somewhere else; I'll think - hey, I don't have that - and I'll be back for another order. The OJC catalog was so vast at one time that, and still is pretty big, that it's hard to have everything worth getting. The highest non-limited edition OJC I have is no. 1108, and the highest limited edition OJC no. I have is 1955. I believe this means that there are 1108 regular OJCs and 256 limited edition OJCs (1700 to 1955), for a grand total of 1364 CDs in the OJC series (not counting of course all the non-OJC Fantasy reissues).

Yes, ordered from DG (shipping today), and the same here, as I really liked Disco 3000.

A Riverside LP that I saw earlier in the week--Songs of the Irish Republican Army.

Joe Puma--Audobon All Stars (Columbia six eyes) Erroll Garner--Concert by the Sea (Columbia six eyes). After coming across trashed copy after trashed copy, I finally found a clean one today. J.J. Johnson--A Touch of Satin (Columbia six eyes) The Exotic Sounds of Bali (Columbia two eyes) Red Garland--Red Alone (Moodsville). This one it appears was originally for sale for $4.98, then reduced to $4.15, which apparently induced Ruby Lee to purchase this album (and write her name on it).

An excellent week for Columbias (promos in virtually unplayed condition): J.J. Johnson--J.J. Inc., and A Touch of Satin (both six eyes) Chico Hamilton--Plays Selections from Bye Bye Birdie-Irma La Douce, and The Chico Hamilton Special (both six eyes) Duke Ellington--All American in Jazz (six eyes) Erroll Garner--Paris Impressions, vol. 1 (six eyes) Dave Brubeck--Jazz Impressions of Japan (two eyes, unopened) Benny Goodman--The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert (six eyes).

Those of use not bored with jazz find those of you constantly talking about how boring jazz has become to be truly boring. -
It's $25 at the site I linked to above. Except for a few domestic releases on Columbia (and I don't think this was one), all DIW's are in Japanese, so I imagine the $56 one is the same as the lower priced one.

Jazzwise, he likes the Modern Jazz Quartet, Jimmy Smith and Mongo Santamaria.
