I haven't seen her in years. I like her guitar playing (especially all those Earl Hooker instrumentals she used to play live), but her singing is pretty bad.

Count me in the dumb category, as I now recall looking at the line-up at Smalls and seeing the name Frank Hewett, not knowing who he was, and passing on the opportunity to see him live.

I saw her play with Bobby Previte and Mark Dresser at the Museum of Modern Art several years ago and was very impressed with her playing and her compositions. I only have a couple of her recordings (not this one).

Actually, I think Gene Shaw's three recordings as a leader are rather good. I'm wishing for a CD reissue of Debut in Blues and Breakthrough, to save me from bad Argo pressings. Dannie Richmond only made a few recordings as a leader, but the one on Horo is outstanding, almost a Mingus recording. Also, the Last Mingus Band A.D. is rather good.

I'm curious which Mingus sideman you are referencing as making mediocre recordings. If I think about the recordings of Mingus sideman (Eric Dolphy, Jaki Byard, Roland Kirk, Booker Ervin, Gene Shaw, John Handy, George Adams, Don Pullen), they comprise a disproportionate number of my favorite jazz recordings. In addition, virtually any Ellingtonian sideman session is virtually guaranteed to be of high quality.

On Magic Sam, I'd say get West Side Soul (Delmark) first. It's both one of the greatest blues recordings and the best Magic Sam recording.

He's on at least one Mingus album (Mingusx5) and, IIRC, Y Lateef's Live at Pep's. Guy Richard Williams also plays on other Mingus recordings: The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (1963), The Complete Town Hall Concert (1962) and some of the tracks on Mingus Dynasty (1959) and Mingus Revisited (1960). In addition, he's on couple of Blue Note recordings: Big John Patton--The Way I Feel Booker Ervin--The In Between

Unfortunately, I haven't seen him live in three or four years, but I sure wouldn't miss him if I had the chance.

There are two outstanding Soul Note releases co-led by George Adams and Dannie Richmond (Hand to Hand and Gentleman's Agreement) that feature Jimmy Knepper.

I recommend Slammin' and Jammin' on High Note/Savant. This one is great--it has Carlos Garnett on tenor and Melvin Sparks on guitar.

Louis Armstrong. Growing up and seeing him on TV in the 1960s, he seemed a mere entertainer. It wasn't until much later when I heard Tight Like That that I understood why the jazz greats that I did get all said he was great.

If I only could get into the time tunnel and go back to the early 90's to see pullen and Adams... I sounds like you need (if you don't already have) the Mosaic Select Don Pullen, which has the last two Adams Pullen albums (on Blue Note) and the two Pullen Trios on Blue Note. A word to the wise, there's some great Adams and Pullen on the hard to find Horo label (out-of-print LP only) under the names of Adams, Pullen, and Dannie Richmond.

George Adams is one of the greats of the tenor saxophone. You should listen again.

I wonder if anyone here has heard of Eugenia Leon. I don't think she's very well known outside of Mexico. This singer is fantastic. I listened to her CD Mar Adentro so many times.
