  1. Huh? Did you just say something? It is a challenge to stay focused on some of these long Trane solos, but I think that ends up being a testament to his high level of stamina. He's playing and creating all that time, all we have to do is pay attention. A shorter attention span is a casualty of our current culture, so look at these Trane solos as a necessary trip to the "mental gym". I'm enjoying the workout, I needed this. I guess I've neglected him a bit lately- what a MF he was/is!!!! I remember in college someone bought one of those long Andrew White transcriptions (like Chasin' The Trane) and we (the "jazz guys") would lay it on the floor, open it up and it would extend through like three rooms of the house. We would put on the record and sort of huddle over it and scoot along accordingly, for the duration. Those were the days for sure.
  2. Mrs. Free For All is out of town this weekend, so I'll be getting grubbage before "hand" too.
  3. H a P p Y b I R t H d A y J o H n ! ! ! I always enjoy your posts here as well as your reviews I come across on various sites. You're a trombone aficionado, a rare breed indeed! You are a valued Organissimite as far as I'm concerned! I hope you have a great day, and many more to come! (I'm not too far behind you, pal!) Edited because I only recently discovered the correct spelling for "aficionado".
  4. Got it today. Outstanding! This is the kind of Trane we used to listen to in college in various, um, altered states. It's even better with a clear head! The stamina of these guys (especially Trane and Elvin) is staggering. And Trane's harmonic vocabulary at this stage is extensive to say the least. Absolutely no complaints about the quality of the sound from me. This has been a year of many sonic blessings!
  5. Surprised no one's mentioned Cootie Williams or Bubber Miley. Also Trummy Young.
  6. I've really enjoyed this one- dripping with soulful swing. Soul Stirrin' is a favorite Blue Note for me, 'cause I do loves me some Jug and Elvin. BG is a swinging trombonist, to my ears shares some similarities with the great Willie Dennis (see the Mulligan CJB Mosaic for some greta WD). You've also got Turrentine and Quebec, how much more can you ask for? I do listen to this one more than some of the Selects. I say
  7. Also RRK on Roy Haynes' Out Of The Afternoon (which happens to be this weeks AOTW! )
  8. The world's a tuxedo and you're a pair of brown shoes.
  9. That made me think of this record. Remember this one? Recorded 2/22/82, produced by CS. Personnel here I'd plum forgot about this! Was it ever on CD? Off-topic apology as usual.
  10. July 15th- how about none other than Philly Joe Jones? Feel better now?
