  1. Just talked to Conn. He's up for a live chat hang tonight......this might be a good time to do it since people will be leaving for the weekend starting tomorrow (me included). So howzabout around 9:30 Eastern time? BYOT* *(bring your own turducken)
  2. Thanks to Duke City for sending me an MP3 of COTN. Yeah, Bud Brisbois! Wow, Billy sure de-Wayned the tune. If I didn't already know COTN it would have been OK to listen to, but many of the unique harmonic devices that Wayne uses were absent. I mean, one of the main points of interest in the tune is the first two chords with the pedal point. F# minor/B to GMA7(#4)/B -totally gone!! What's next, Pensativa turned into a blues? A related story- there are some published re-arrangements of some of Thad's big band compositions that are watered down (you know, all those pesky rhythms and odd harmonies removed ) to make them playable for less experienced bands. That always bothered me- if Thad is too advanced for an ensemble, then DON'T PLAY THAD until you are ready! And the guys who re-arrange these tunes- JUST WRITE AN ORIGINAL PIECE "IN THE STYLE OF". Don't be messin' with Thad's bid'ness! Sheesh.
  3. Children of the Night Wow. Arranged by Billy May? I don't know about that. Is it bouncy? Did he get rid of all those wrong chords that Wayne insists on writing?
  4. Matt Dennis wrote some great tunes- also Angel Eyes, Everything Happens To Me and Will You Still Be Mine, to name a few.
  5. Happy Birthday Don! :rsmile:
  6. Hey Nojjjjjy! Your boys beat Denver on the road! How about that?
  7. Some great Wayne playing/writing on this one. I really like his tune Sleeping Dancer.
  8. H d B i B c F k ! EDIT: OK, I see no evidence on the board that it actually is your birthday, but I'll play along anyway.......
  9. 52-7 at this point.
  10. Ah yes. I refer to those as Tux, Bux & Sux gigs.
  11. Steve Kujala did some nice things w/Chick Corea. Have to mention Joe Farrell and Frank Wess too.
  12. Thanks to both Hans and bluesbro for this heads-up. A great deal! I've been wanting to pick this up and this was a great opportunity.
  13. Wouldn't that be interesting to know how they ended up? You know, the one group that (IMHO) really didn't fit on the Woodstock concert was Shanana. They seemed really out of place.
  14. Lately I've had more than a little fascination with the music & culture of this era (outside of the jazz genre). I recently watched the Woodstock film (excellent sound on the director's cut, BTW), Miles' Isle of Wight performance and Janis Joplin's "Festival Express". I was only 11 in 1969, but was aware of Woodstock without really understanding the cultural significance. After watching the Woodstock film I think it's amazing that the event came off with so few serious issues given the attendance of 500,000. Two deaths and two births. No way that something like that could ever happen again. What an amazing time as far as the loss of innocence/coming of age aspect of the culture, you know, a gathering of that many diverse facets of society with so few negative moments. How sad that it really couldn't happen again. I would be interested to hear of any tales related to these large-scale events either by those who may have actually participated, or observations of those who were simply around at the time. As I said, I was a little young at the time to understand the cultural significance, but for whatever reason I really identified with the whole "hippie" culture (and this while I was in MF IOWA!) and feel it contributed to my eventual appreciation of and obsession with art & jazz and identification with the latter's general underground existence. The people I was hanging out with at the time shared that attitude, kind of an oasis in the middle of a conservative land. Maybe I'm having a mid-life crisis with this obsession with the 60s/70s. I dunno- maybe I'm just longing for a different time, given our current culture. But I'm betting that there are some here who probably have some first-hand experiences to share. So thank you in advance. ....and Hendrix's set was some crazy good shit!
  15. Chicken breasts cooked in the crock pot, mashed red potatoes w/gravy and roasted asparagus. I cooked the chicken with some stock, onion soup mix, seasonings and a splash of balsamic vinegar. I add the liquid to a flour/butter roux and it makes excellent gravy.
  16. I've been enjoying this side- I hear a high level of musicianship and a high level of joy. Sure, it was likely a "manufactured" project by some producer, putting the two older guys together, but I don't hear any "feebleness" in their performance. No need to "cut the cats some slack" here, no "clutching at straws", everyone is doing just fine. Moody & Jones are great treasures and we're lucky to get to hear their work, now and before. Edit: You know, another "geezer" I had the honor to know was Bill Perkins, and he was continuing to evolve as a player 'til the day he died. No "rusting on laurels" there! That's very inspiring to me as a player. Edit #2: Pardon the "extreme" use of "quotation marks"......

    Blue Note

    I remain hopeful.
  18. When I read the thread title I thought maybe peterintoronto had punched out Alan Lawrence. (from this thread)
  19. One of the stranger album covers of all time. Especially because the title of the album is "Trout Mask Replica", but the cover depicts a Trout MASK, not a Trout Mask Replica. But how do you know it is indeed an actual trout mask and NOT a replica of an actual trout mask?
