  1. I agree. a lot of bluster over a very simple and undoubtedly common melodic fragment. and really just the first two bars- the rest of the phrase is different in the two versions.
  2. It's just because of Chris' giant ancestors and their glaring disapproval from above.
  3. A little. But I'm still going to have vodka for dinner.
  4. Let me save some time here. FFA: "Tonight I'm having boring unimaginative chicken something blah blah blah..." catesta: "Tonight I'm having blah blah blah pancetta blah blah blah ceci beans blah blah blah arborio riso blah blah blah eggplant blah blah I'm a frickin' genius chef etc." Valerie/rachel: "Oh catesta, you really know how to live and cook!! blah blah blah" I give up.
  5. On CD, yeah. But just like when LPs went away (mostly) they'll be some other way to distribute the "software." The biggest drag is the way the cover art, liners and personnel info has gone away- it shrunk from LPs to CDs and now has vanished almost completely with the download age. My students will bring in a recording and I'll ask them "OK, who's on drums, piano etc.?" and they don't know. They have to look it up somewhere, and too many don't bother doing so. When I was their age one of the important parts of listening to and studying the music was to be able to hear the difference between Elvin/Tony/Billy/Joe etc. Now many of these key players seem to be becoming anonymous to the younger generation. Also, I've always thought of an album as a set of tunes that belong together, put in a specific order for a reason (think Speak No Evil). When people download one tune at a time they miss out on that quality, plus they miss out on discovering lesser-known "B side" gems. I have mixed feelings about the way things are evolving- there are many aspects of convenience in the technology, but it seems like some critical aspects of the "art" are disappearing.
  6. The ebay deal hasn't panned out. I jumped on it as soon a Hans posted and now I keep getting emails from the merchant saying they are waiting for stock. Looks like a scam. Same here. So Chuck, did you cancel your order or are you going to wait it out a bit longer?
  7. Man, Detroit just can't win anything these days.
  8. Chicken fajitas- marinated & grilled chicken breasts, grilled onions and peppers, black beans, fresh salsa, cilantro & sour cream on a flour tortilla. Still grillin' weather down here!
  9. Sorry to say I'm not a big GG fan. Great LA players in that band, but the writing is too much flash over substance for my taste. Glad you like his stuff, but be aware there are a lot of other great writers to check out.
  10. There's a song by jazz trumpeter Nat Adderley performed by him and his brother (saxophonist Cannonball Adderley) called "Work Song" that has all three of the above (no trading twos, but it sounds like that's optional). The stop time and blue notes are built into the melody of the tune, and there's plenty of improvisation. Waiting until the last minute to write our paper, are we?
  11. Exactly what I would have picked, however mine are all on CD.
  12. I hope all you folks have carbon monoxide detectors in your homes. I think it's a very good idea.
  13. Chewy needs to visit the other coast one day.
  14. I'm going to spend Christmas with my sister this year and we were talking about our family's traditional holiday sides & treats. One I always remember is a cranberry Jello salad with celery, pecans, mandarin oranges, sometimes little bits of cream cheese. Probably pretty common, but it was good. Also, my mom would always make a big 'ol batch of Chex mix- ours always had chex, pretzels, cheese crackers and nuts. I used to eat that stuff like crazy. Nothing really exotic in our family. My dad would always have some great oranges on hand, and there was always a variety of candy- my favorite was the toffee covered in chocolate and nuts. Candied fruit too, although I wasn't into that until later. I'm going to a holiday party tonight and I'm taking my usual contribution- a warm queso made from Velveeta, picante sauce, sausage with a little onion & garlic powder and pepper. Sometimes I put chipotles in, but some people don't like 'em, so I will leave them out this time. Not in any way a healthy food, but it's sooooo good and always is a big hit and goes fast. Anybody ever make Hoppin' John for the New Year? I'd be curious to hear of our board members' off-the-beaten-path holiday guilty pleasures.
  15. Nice recording quality. Can't name the tune, but I'm feeling fairly funkafied. And thank you for that, by the way.
  16. Best wishes and positive thoughts for one of my favorite trumpet players.
  17. I hope everyone has a safe, happy and delicious Thanksgiving!
  18. Didn't know you be a serialist.
  19. Yes, and yes.
  20. But then you'd have to include all those pesky rhythms and odd harmonies... Unless it's "Thad Lite®".........bad taste, less filling.
  21. That's a general term I've heard too. I think are examples where the player is just playing the highest possible sound with little regard for pitch/chord relevancy, and then then are some who actually play specific notes appropriate to the tonality. I'm more a fan of the latter, although Cat Anderson has played some pretty abstract obbligatos that (while having little to do w/the harmony of the moment) are obviously effective in creating excitement. Once I was playing in a big band and there was a trumpet player who insisted on playing the highest note possible at the end of certain charts. Most of the time there was neither a discernable pitch nor harmonic relevance, just a lot of ego. He became known (behind his back) as "Can't Anderson". Glenn (Duke City) knows this story.......tell us about the "spray", Glenn.....................
  22. Biggest snow dumps I ever saw in my life were in that general area. Toronto down to Buffalo and Detroit. Only time I have had to dig my car out of a ditch. Oh - hang on, there was another time. The Donner Pass. Hope you brought a snack.....
