  1. I agree--the best version I've heard features the Kind of Blue edition of the Miles Davis group, it's on the CD '58 Sessions. One of my favorite moments in recorded jazz happens right at the beginning of the second chorus when Trane comes in and Jimmy & PC start to walk at that medium tempo. Sublime.
  2. That's because he's one better than a ten.
  3. So far so good noj! Everyone else is pretty much tanking already!
  4. Colts/Bolts likely going into OT. It's been a great game. EDIT: Stupid penalties by the Colts in OT. They gave it away, although Darren Sproles (from Waterloo, Iowa!) played a GREAT MF game (328 yards!)! The absence of LT was not a factor tonight.
  5. My nephew gave me this for Christmas. It's actually pretty funny!
  6. Anyone else unable to view new posts on the other Billy Mitchell thread?
  7. Some great responses. I'll add a couple: For a live session the first that comes to mind is Miles' Plugged Nickel.
  8. I hope many of you are kissing your significant other right now......or at least a sub.
  9. HAPPY 2009 (east coast time) EVERYONE!
  10. ....also, way too much rich food and too damn many shots of Patron Silver, Herradura and other assorted liquors/beers. But who wants to live forever, anyway??
  11. I was hanging with my best buddy in Iowa City (Miles251, who plays trumpet) when we heard about Freddie's passing on Sunday morning. The weird thing is we were also by chance together when we heard about Miles' passing (and we don't see each other all that often-should we stop hanging out?). Anyway, we spun some Freddie just like we spun some Miles (also Kenny Dorham, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Douglas and others). Much love for Freddie.
  12. Just got back from my 2500 mile quest to the frozen tundra of Iowa. A little taste of winter and I retreat to Florida- I'm losing my midwest cold weather chops. But big fun, great music and good hangs and laughs w/friends & family. And always nice to come home to my own bed (it's becoming obvious my college-student-era ability to sleep on couches and floors is MF OVER). Another year goes by and this board is better than ever (to say it again- big fun, great music and good hangs and laughs w/friends and family) . May we hang here forever. Another big thank you to our hosts Jim, Joe and Randy. BTW, I enjoyed Groovadelphia multiple times on my trip. I want to hear and hang with you guys soon. This board so blows away everyplace else on the "internets". To all, best wishes in meeting all your challenges. Positive thoughts to all who are dealing with issues of health, money, relationships and whatever else. No question, 2009 is going to be anything but dull. H A P P Y N E W Y E A R ! ! !
  13. Very sorry to hear this. Freddie was a distinct voice in the music, always instantly identifiable. I loved his Bluenotes, his CTIs and pretty much everything he did. So many great sideman appearances as well. He will always be one of the greats IMHO. Glad his suffering is over, but sorry he's no longer with us. RIP.
  14. Seconded. Hard to narrow it down to five, but I'd have to include Dream of You (with Gil Evans' great charts) and/or also the one w/Clifford.
  15. Very sorry to hear that.
  16. Best wishes and good thoughts to both of you and your families.
  17. After two years of zero holiday payoff I've decided to travel this year. Lots of miles on the ol' vehicle but much more holiday fun, where there was none before. I'm going to go up into the frigid tundra of Iowa to visit my sister in the Iowa/Illinois Quad Cities (which consist of Moline, Bettendorf, Davenport & Rock Island for those of you who could care less ). I will then travel to Iowa City to visit my buddy (miles251), and then go to Des Moines to play a gig w/the Des Moines big band (led by Jim Oatts, who happens to be brother of altoist Dick Oatts). They have many of my arrangements in their book, so they are obliged to suffer fools like me gladly. So it looks like an I-80 Christmas for me. To all of you who are traveling this year, good luck w/all that! Be careful out there! And happy holidays to all!
  18. Nearly 80 here. First time I've ever worn shorts on December 18th (and no, I'm not referring to underwear ).
