Phineas Newborn, Jr. 'Solo Piano' (Atlantic) probably my favorite Newborn!

Obscure movies that you remember from your youth
brownie replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
A couple of years after the end of WWII, going to the cinema with mom and dad was a once a week affair. I don't remember the featured film that week but at intermission there was a trailer for the following week's film, Michael Curtiz 'Captain Blood'. The sea battle scenes were hypnotizing! I was back in the cinema house the next week to watch and be thrilled by the movie. I still get kicks out of watching it when it plays on TV (I miss the Henri Langlois Cinemathèque when films of this kind were shown on the giant screen in near-perfect condition!). -
My BN Woolworth scene took place in Montreal in the Summer of 1976 when I was out there to cover the Olympic Games. On a very rare afternoon off, I walked past a record shop (on Sherbrooke??) with its walls filled with hundreds of sealed Blue Note vinyls. All for Canadian $3,99 each. I stopped buying after getting about three dozen of the LPs when I started worrying about the extra weight and luggage space. United Artists labels most of them, no Lexingtons!

It is an excellent inprint discography. But with the internet presence of the Miles Ahead site, I would say it tends to be come superfluous.

BN Packaging i NEVER KNEW EXISTED!!!!!

+ Ruth Lion, presumably? No women when I dropped by. The BN office was pretty bright with large windows. From what i remember there were just two or three people inside. The work place was separated from the visitors' space by a wooden barrier. Should have taken photos when I visited the place -
I don't remember the article but I must have a copy of that issue of Jazz Hot somewhere...

S'il vous Plait is a John Lewis composition for the Miles Davis nonet. It was played during the Royal Roost appearances of the band but was not among the tunes that were recorded for Capitol. The other S'il Vous Plait is a New Orleans style composition. Not sure about the John Pisano S'il Vous Plait

BN Packaging i NEVER KNEW EXISTED!!!!!
brownie replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Discography
After I started writing articles in French magazines in the late '50s, I needed to get BN albums which were pretty hard to get in Paris in those days and very expensive. BN accepted to ship me review copies for $2,50 a LP. Still pretty expensive back then. Most of my pocket money (I was still in highschool) went to purchase those Blue Notes. Later when I traveled to New York in the mid-60s, I visited the BN offices (on 61st Street) and got more albums from Wolff and Lion! They were pretty busy and did not have much time to talk to them. Beside on one of the visits, Roy Haynes was making some noise because he wanted a free copy of Silver's Song for my Father. -
Not at all! Aka-Ba was Tyler's own label. He gave Bleu Regard the rights to reissue Aka-Ba's material which Bleu Regard did after the label was created in 1992. Bleu Regard did all they could to help Tyler's final years. Beside the Aka-Ba reissues, they also released four CDs of Tyler's music.

Not so sure it is a late pressing. I have exactly the same LP (with the Watermelon Man sticker). It came directly from the BN offices shortly after its release. The LP is still with the BN innersleeve of the time (the ones with the stamp-size albums covers on both sides), not the brown sleeve shown on the ebay post. But there was no 45 with my copy -

Upcoming Bunny Berigan bio

There has already been a highly readable Bunny Berigan biography. The Robert Dupuis 'Bunny Berigan, Elusive Legend of Jazz' published in 1993. It looked like this when it came out and looks like this by now... I have not seen anything about the new book on this Bunny Berigan site. -
Upcoming Lucky Thompson Select tracklisting

Yes, the same. That Lucky Thompson Select must have been very difficult to assemble because of the copyright problems, what with the various record labels involved! -
Charles Tyler 'Voyage from Jericho' (Ak-Ba) with Earl Cross, Arthur Blythe, Ronnie Boykins and Steve Reid An album that needs to be properly reissued!

Mingus Ah Um Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus The Great Paris Concert Ah Um because it was the first Mingus album I loved from start to finish on its first listening, the Candid because it had the perfect quartet combination with Dolphy, and the Paris concert for its incredible music and for several personal reasons (I was lucky to be there!).

Upcoming Lucky Thompson Select tracklisting

Good to see new Selects being prepared even if I shall skip that Lucky Thompson. Already have several vinyl and CD versions of its content including an original copy of the Polydor session with Sammy Price (one of the very last vinyl I purchased a couple of months ago!). I'll be waiting too for a complete Milt Jackson-Lucky Thompson on Savoy Select! -

Oui... it was good to see that money cannot buy everything (at least, sometime...). Would not have bet on an upset after watching the first-half. An impressive Lyon came back and blocked Real Madrid's attempt to go beyond the 1-1 score! Real won't be playing the Champions League final on their homeground at Santiago Bernabeu in May! -

Splendid goal by Samir Nasri indeed! The stubborn French national team coach Raymond Domenech has neglected Nasri for much too long. Les Bleus can't spare a talent like him but I doubt Domenech will change his mind! -
